My question for this week is:

What song did you have your first dance to at your wedding? Was there a special reason for this song? If you are not married yet, what song would you pick and why?

Talk about your random questions, but I needed something not related to school, so please humor me!

JL and I had a tough time coming up with songs to dance to at our wedding. We knew that we would start off the reception with the traditional Horah, but after that it was tough. Decisions had to be made for our first dance and for the one with my father and JL’s mother.  We did not want to use things that were constantly used at the time.

A few months before our wedding my father bought a new CD from the BeeGee’s. He sat us down to listen to a song. The song was Wedding Day and had just been released. JL and I had never heard it before. Once we heard it we fell in love with the song. We knew we wanted this for our wedding day. I called our band to find out if they would be able to do it. It was new to them, but she said with some information they would likely be able to do it.

Our first dance - June 2001

Thanks to my father’s suggestion we had a beautiful song for our wedding day. Here is a video of the BeeGee’s performing this song not long after it was released.

 Have a wonderful weekend!

Ours was Head over Feet by Alanis Morissette. The lyrics described our relationship pretty strongly and we both loved the song. We weren’t sure if it was really an appropriate song for a wedding first dance but we used it anyway.

  • Qtpies7 says:

I didn’t have a dance for my wedding. And I am really not all that into music. However, if I were to pick one for a vow renewal or something, I would pick
“I think we’re alone now” by Tiffani, because that was our song. Still is, lol. After 7 kids, it is still fitting, but for different reasons.

  • Shelley says:

Ours was “Bless The Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts. We picked it before the song was released as a single and became so popular. We had just gotten engaged when their new CD had come out. I listened to it the first night I got it and cried when I heard the song. It described us perfectly….how we both had been through rocky relationships in the past, but felt so blessed to have found each other. Hearing the song still gives me chills!

We didn’t have a first dance! Our wedding was very informal so we didn’t have a lot of things (no first dance, no cake cutting, etc.). I just didn’t want all eyes on me =)

  • My one and Only Love by Louis Armstrong ~ we listened to a ton of CD’s before we both heard that one and AHA!

  • Tara says:

We eloped!!! I do wish we would of had a traditional wedding …with the wedding song..ect.. but at the time we thought we were brilliant with the elopement lol

  • Jenni says:

Ours was Can You Feel the Love Tonight by Elton John!

  • Jenn says:

We danced to “Your Song”, but the version by Ewin McGreggor. We both just liked it, so that’s what we decided on.

  • Lisa C. says:

wow… many years ago.. lol.. our song was I swear by all4one..

  • Elaine says:

Our song was “I Could Not Ask For More” by Edwin McCain. I loved the words when I heard it on the radio one day and my husband liked it to. Plus it wasn’t one that everyone was using (we like to go against the grain). I love the memory when I hear it now…

We just got married by a judge, so we never had a first song to dance to.

Thanks for stopping by. I don’t know how I could fail to mention blogging as one of my hobbies.

  • We didn’t have a traditional wedding so we didn’t have a first dance.

Thank you for sharing your lovely wedding photo. That’s a sweet song.

  • OK – You asked. Fly Me To The Moon by Frank Sinatra. It was special because on her first real date he took me to the top of the building that we both worked in and he sang me the song and we danced in the moonlight. It was pretty darn romantic. Ahhhh good times!

  • Deborah says:

We did not have dancing at our wedding. But, my brother sang, “When God Made You” by Newsong.

  • We danced to “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney.

I love that song, but looking back I would have chosen a song that was shorter.

  • Kim says:

Great photo! I love seeing people’s wedding pictures. Y’all make a lovely couple!

  • Sandra says:

We had 2 dances. We danced alone with no one else on the floor to Celine Dion and R. Kelly singing “I’m your Angel” the song fit us because it says in it :

No mountains too high for you to climb
all you have to do is have some climbing faith
    (oh yeah)
No rivers too wide for you to make it across
All you have to do is believe it when you pray
And then you will see the morning will come
And everyday will be bright as the sun
All of your fears cast them on me
I just want you to see

I’ll be your cloud up in the sky
I’ll be your shoulder when you cry
I’ll hear your voices when you call me
    I am your angel
And when all hope is gone I’m here
No matter how far you are I’m near
It makes no difference who you are
    I am your angel

And we had a long distance relationship before I moved here so it fit.

Then we asked the bridal party to come up and dance with us and we played our second choice, which was picked much like the first..because of the words. It is Truly, Madly, Deeply by Savage Garden. The words to this fit us well too! …..

I’ll be your dream, I’ll be your wish I’ll be your fantasy.
I’ll be your hope, I’ll be your love be everything that you need.
I love you more with every breath truly madly deeply do..
I will be strong I will be faithful ‘cos I’m counting on A new beginning.
A reason for living. A deeper meaning.

I want to stand with you on a mountain.
I want to bathe with you in the sea.
I want to lay like this forever.
Until the sky falls down on me…

Funny thing, this same group also sang “I knew I loved you before I met you” which is my song for Jenna. I heard that when I was pregnant and again after I had her and then it made me just bawl because it is so true for her! I did dream her into my life and I did wait FOREVER for her!!! And she completed us as a family. OK…I am done now before I cry!!! Thanks for this question- it was great!

    Maybe it’s intuition
but some things you just don’t question
Like in your eyes, I see my future in an instant
    And there it goes,
I think I found my best friend
I know that it might sound
    more than a little crazy
    but I believe…

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

There’s just no rhyme or reason
    Only the sense of completion
And in your eyes, I see
the missing pieces I’m searching for
I think I’ve found my way home
I know that it might sound
    more than a little crazy
    but I believe…
