Pricey week

When we bought our house almost five years ago, we remodeled the entire kitchen. This is why it was needed.

Old Kitchen - April '04    The Fridge in the old location

A wall was moved, pass through was put in, new stove/vent/dishwasher were bought. Only one item remained from the original kitchen. That item was the refrigerator.

Remodeled kitchen - June '04    Fridge in new location

Over the years the refrigerator has given us a lot of trouble. Not staying cool enough in the summer, forming ice on produce, and the latest water sitting on the bottom and forming chunks of ice that was not in the freezer. The sad part, the refrigerator was manufactured in 2001. Not too old, but not worth spending a lot to fix since it is not an Energy Star appliance.

Over the weekend, we started to look for a replacement. Things went into rapid mode Thursday while I was sitting with JSL and feeding him. I heard water dripping in the kitchen. I followed the noise into the refrigerator. To my horror there was a huge waterfall inside. I moved things around and followed the flow of water. It was coming from on top and everything was soaked. By the time I moved everything and put a container inside to catch the water, it was starting to slow down.

I called JL at work and told him our time was up. We had to make a decision and get a new refrigerator before this one completely died on us. The little guy and I went to two additional stores this morning. After JL got home from work, we brought the boys to Nana and Papa’s house and went to buy a new refrigerator.

I am happy to report that we are the proud new owners of an Amana that has the freezer drawer on the bottom. Now we just hope that the "old" refrigerator keeps plugging before our new one arrives Thursday (they were already booked for Monday delivery).

So my question to you this week:

What is the most expensive item that you bought this week and why did you purchase it?

  • Ummmm… the most expensive item I purchased this week was a $5 card I bought for Hubby for Valentine’s Day. We are trying not to spend money but I had to get him a card.

  • I have so much empathy for you. We’re in the middle of a forced remodel. A gallon of paint was the most expensive thing so far this week.

  • pam says:

The only thing I have bought this week is groceries. One trip was $80 and another trip was $25.

    Not too exciting !!

  • Vicki says:

Monday we went to re-sign the final papers on a house because the bank gave us a lower rate than the one they gave us to begin with. How great is that? Since it costs more than the last one we bought, this is the most expensive thing we’ve EVER bought !!

  • Heather says:

The hubs and I both purchased each other new bicycles for Valentine’s Day. Ya know, so we can hop on the health bandwagon. Eh … I won’t give numbers but let’s just say that big momma won’t be getting a pedi this week!

  • Louise says:

I’m working on getting my house ready to sell, so the most expensive item i bought this week was a curtain to hang as a closet door

  • Louise says:

    sorry about your fridge

  • Jackie says:

Hmmm…. most expensive item this week…. well, I’ve been pretty good about NOT spending money this week… much to my surprise LOL…. but my answer would have to be a boring one….. around $150 worth of food the other day. :)

    Cute blog!

  • Kmelion says:

Yeah, gonna go with the mundane groceries… about $200 worth for a good chunk of the month.

We bought a new fridge in December… the one we had was dying and we decided we’d better buy a new one on OUR schedule rather than on the existing fridge’s…

  • A necklace for my wife . . . for Valentine’s Day . . . and she wanted it . . . and she told me to buy it for her (I think she ‘asked’ :).

  • Sues2u2 says:

Sorry ’bout the fridge! I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the replacement gets there first!!!

Most expensive item this week was the two craft carts @ $64 for the two. Trying to do spring cleaning early!

  • sagemom says:

I am happy to say I haven’t spent a cent this week!

  • kailani says:

It would have to be DH’s Valentine’s Day gift. I bought him a Nintendo DS.

  • The most expensive item I bought this week was a pair of shoes for myself. They were $15.00 and on clearance. They are Clarks and I love them!

  • The most expensive item I bought this week was groceries!!! I spend a lot on food because I love to eat!

  • Janet F says:

I spent about $40 on cards and gift wrap paper this week.

  • Sarah says:

I didn’t buy anything except groceries this week….but I did get a box of diapers for $39.99 – pretty big ticket item for us!

  • angela says:

goceries , probably the butterfly steaks @ $12 for 9 steaks was the most expensive but then valentines only comes once a year

  • Lori Downs says:

    Carpet cleaning…….lol

  • Nancy says:

Sorry about the fridge, I hope the old one makes it until the new one comes. You’ll have to let us know how you like the bottom-drawer freezer.

I wrote a check to the PTA today for $110 for the tricky tray in a couple of weeks, this bought 2 admission tickets, a package of tickets for the basket raffle, and a book of 50/50 chances. It’s all for the children…

  • Shelley K says:

I bought a beautiful gown for a cruise that we are going to later this year. I feel just like a princess in it!

  • Ok, I hate to admit it, but I bought my daughters some super cute clothes at Gymboree this week. BUT they were having a BIG sale, so I simply couldn’t resist!

  • Cathi says:

That would be a little tiny laptop for bloging and emails on the go.
    It fits in my handbag!!
It was only $300 at Costco. You can get one too!!

  • Pegsy says:

Just groceries this week, and even that was a small trip! LAST week was a different story! We went on vacation, so that was expensive – but we had saved for it!

  • Joyful Noise says:

The most expensive thing I bought this week was the movies “Space Buddies” and “Madegascar II” for my boys for Valentine’s Day.

  • Qtpies7 says:

Thankfully I have Amazon gift cards, becuase otherwise I wouldn’t be buying anything that isn’t groceries, my husband is laid off.
I bought a Wii game that you can play on the balance board on your butt, lol. Looks way too funny! Raving Rabbids TV Party.

I am so surprised that so few people read marriage books! Wow! I have a great marriage, and there is always room for improvement.

  • Liz says:

No major purchases for me this week but I HAD to comment on the kitchen renovation. We, too, are doing everything but the fridge! I really want to replace it, but can’t justify it since it still works!

  • Kim says:

Mine was tickets to my son’s musical at school, because I had to pick up tickets for a bunch of people so handed the school over a check for $275. Yikes that pinched, LOL.

  • Elizabeth says:

I think it cost me $14 to ship my son’s Valentine goodie box to him. That’s probably the most I spent. :)

  • Jodi says:

Hm, I think the most expensive thing I’ve bought/paid for are my CT taxes on my car that I haven’t ever gotten around to pay. Oops Groceries get the close second at 230.

  • Pay the mortgage! LOL

Actually we’ve been trying not to spend money this week. Although, I feel for you and the ‘fridge. A few months back ours turned into the new washing machine and dryer.

  • Heather says:

Ugh, I shudder to read this because our fridge has a leak too – the water spreads out over the shelves and then FREEZES. It took forever to figure out the fridge was leaking… I thought some container had opened or something. No such luck!!

I bought $60 worth of kids’ clothes at Kohl’s yesterday – that is a bad, bad place when you are trying not to spend too much (it’s cheap but you buy too much)… Ava needs spring clothes though. Well, eventually she will… if it’s ever spring!

  • I bought my wedding band this week. I am trying to knock things off the wedding checklist and this was an easy one for us to do on the weekend. So last Saturday we bought mine and we hopefully will be going back and buying his when we pick mine up from being sized.

  • I bought a pass to a professional conference that was $200. Every three years I have to renew my certification, so I have to get professional development hours at conferences. My hubby is in the same profession, so actually make that $400 for both of our passes. Ouch.

  • I bought a set of stainless steel pots and pans because we needed a new set. Or, because I wanted a new set I guess. Thanks for visiting – where did you get your profile pic? I want something like that but just can’t find anything like it on the web.

  • Let’s see…the most expensive things purchased this week… I spent about $50 on chocolates and little gifts for the Hubby and Princess Nagger for Valentine’s Day… :)

Sorry about your fridge – hopefully the new one will arrive before the old one totally stops working!

  • kris says:

No expensive purchases for our household this week except groceries!

  • citystreams says:

Yowsers! :o) Sounds like a fun week. Hope next week is a little cheaper for you!

  • We needed to pay 80 bucks for hotel room!

    Enjoy your new fridge!

  • Laura says:

I was off work this week due to my gall bladder surgery and didn’t really spend any money. Maybe the most I spent was dinner out Friday night for the family. We went to Applebee’s.
