Just days before NHL’s family birthday party (this past Sunday), I still had no menu for the lunch we were going to be serving people. Sure, I had ideas of what we needed to feed the kids. Still, the exact menu did not fully come together until we went shopping on Friday afternoon. We went to BJ’s and I found cheese tortellini, suddenly the main dish was before me. Here is a view of the foods on the table:
We made the tortellini with lots of veggies and sauce on them. In addition to this, we had cut up veggies and dip, Baked Scoops and a bean dip that Katie blogged about (we added fake taco meat), soy meatballs, macarroni and cheese, and some pizza to bake. Please note that because of people that keep kosher (including TechyDad), we do dairy foods and meat substitutes to have cake later on. Everyone seemed to like it.
Then, it was time for cake. Sad to admit, the cake that NHL asked me to bake literally fell apart Sunday morning as I was decorating it. It tasted great, but I quickly recalled why I do not like making layer cakes.
TechyDad took NHL out to buy another cake to put on the table, along with the egg free one for my niece. These are the goodies that we had for everyone, along with the failed layer cake that everyone also enjoyed.
Anyone else think that the balloons on the cake (especially on the right), look like something out of a biology lesson?!
So this week I ask you:
When you plan a birthday party, what do you like to serve people to eat?
If you are a fan of The Wiggles or know someone that is, be sure to enter my giveaway for their new DVD. For another chance, stop by TechyDad’s blog as well. I am also giving away a $25 gift card to Sock4Life, so please leave a comment or two there for another great prize.

Aloha #114

Oh no you’re poor cake! The store bought one…those are some pretty balloons ;)
We usually do a BBQ, relish tray, chips, dips, and of course Birthday Cake!
we normally have cake and ice cream…
and maybe a few snacks
Cake, Ice Cream, chips, drinks. We don’t usually make a meal of it.
Depends on whose birthday it is what we have for the main course, but we always have cake and ice cream.
I focus on cake…..a meal would be too much for me! LOL :-) You’ve made me hungry for a late night snack now!
We have just had two birthday parties this summer. One we ate a pizza place, and the second we ordered fried chicken. I let the kids choose. We don’t eat out much, so this is a treat for them.
I just do chips, veggies and of course, cake and ice cream.
Why can’t balloons look like balloons? They always end up looking like something else!
It is mostly the kids and we have Pizza and chocolate everything.
My Aloha Friday Link for you
Pizza is always the easiest choice. If it’s summer, my husband might grill hamburgers and hot dogs. If it’s winter, we like to do chili.
First of all, I love the whole NHL thing :)
I usually stalk out what they’ve got going on at Sam’s Club that looks easy to pop into the oven or cooker.
Got my hotel res :)
That is alot of food ! YUM
I don’t do parties because we are alone here, but if I did, I’d think more cake, ice cream, chips and fruits and drinks etc.
Oh that looks YUMMY!!! I like to serve a lot of things…veggies like you have there, cake, pizza, wings, salads, chips/dips, and I also like when people bring their own…someone always has something I would not even have thought of…and usually use for the next party!
Now that my “boys” are 26 and 24, we go out for bdays. But after seeing the spread you put out, please invite me to the next party.

Layered cakes are no fun to decorate at all! Sorry yours fell apart!
What food we serve definitely depends on the party and my energy level! But cake and ice cream is a must!
Cake & ice cream
We either have a cookout – with hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. or winter type birthdays we will have Spaghetti and meatballs – that’s one of my families favorites.
pizza :)
Pizza, anything BBQ’d…easy stuff! I hate doing too much but always ask each kid what they would like to have to eat.
wow!!Looks amazing! I will be right over!!It depends!the age of kids Usually cake and ice cream and some kind of snack!Cut up fruit chips etc!:)
We usually do a sandwich platter and maybe some fruit. Cake, popcorn and ice cream too!
[…] are too moist and fall apart. Check out what happened to NHL’s special lemon cake that he wanted last August […]
