Election Season Signs

Living in New York state, we are lucky not to be a battle ground for the upcoming presidential election. Thanks to this, the nasty political ads for that race are less frequent. I take that back, perhaps they are more prevalent and I have just tuned them out or just not watching as much television. For those of you living those battleground states, I am SO sorry you have to keep dealing with this on a daily basis.

I promise this is not a political post. My style of writing about election day is nothing really controversial. Basically, similar to my Tuesday Tales post on a book  called Vote for Me for kids.

While driving the kids to school, something else made me stop and think. There were few if any campaign signs on lawns in the residential areas. I remember back when most lawns contained signs to support your candidate of choice. Of course around here, we had a lot of Bill Clinton signs. Now I think I can count on one hand the number of signs I have seen for both of the candidates. Even the local candidates are running for office are not as visible. It made me wonder why this is happening. Are campaigns spending less money (don’t laugh), are people less likely to share their political views on their doorstep, or is it something else?

A huge thank you to my friends for assisting me with the photo above. Traci, The View from my Fishbowl, helped me with the fall photo in Ohio. Then I reached out to Cathi, Simple Sojourns, and she took the photo in sunny California.

So my question to you this week:

Have you seen a decrease in political signs in your area? I would love to know what state you are in if you are willing to share. I’m curious if it matters based on location.

FYI – Two giveaways happening for books that would make great gifts. Linnea in Monet’s Garden and some classic stories from Silver Penny Stories.

I am lucky enough to live in the swing state of Ohio. :)

The amount of campaign signs in neighborhoods and on the side of the roads is amazing. I pass through one intersection and on one corner at least 10 different candidates (state and federal) have signs up..and the signs are the BIG ones, not the little yard signs. The funny thing is, yard signs don’t win campaigns…but everyone spends money on them.

  • Live in RI and it seems that the amount of signs are somewhat less because there aren’t many local elections taking place.

We have some signs in yards around here, not tons. Mostly Presidential ones, few locals. The news campaigns, are definitely out of hand and I hardly ever answer my home phone anymore because 90% of them are political survey calls.

  • I haven’t really noticed a difference either way – I tend to zone out stuff like that. ;)

Political signs are quite abundant in California. Some people have five or more. I have two. Romney as you showed in your post and one for our local council woman who is seeking re-elcection. Busy intersections are covered with signs posted on the telephone poles and fences which I don’t mind as long as the candidate makes sure the signs are all removed after the election. It bugs me if they’re not removed afterwards. LOL

  • We live in Texas and there are quite a few signs in our neighborhood generally I have noticed that if one has Romney then someone next door or across the street has Obama. Other than that I think there are more “local” signs then for President.

  • I’m in Texas. I have also noticed a decrease in political signs in front of houses. However, there are more signs on commercial property. Not only are they everywhere, they are really big.

I’m in Batavia, IL next door to Naperville which is better known and 45 minutes from Chicago. I have not seen one sign in our town that I can remember. Oh I’ve seen signs for lower platforms, but not for President. Oh wait I think remembering a bumper sticker on a car a few times that’s it. Have a great weekend.

Funny since I live in Ill. and Obama has 99% chance of winning, there is little push for him. However, the people living south of Chicago can be a bit angry with Chicago Dems in general, and they’ll vote for about anyone who is not a dem.

For me, it’s the huge over-sized signs I have a problem with.

  • Um uh…I haven’t seen much. Haha. I think I”m not looking. It’s the same way I don’t hear political ads. I tune them out, flip the channel etc.

Very few I’ve seen. Maybe I’m not in the right part of town or people just do not want to bother .

    No sign in my yard.

I see political signs often in California, both local and presidential. Many homes have multiple signs. I don’t mind as long as they don’t block intersections.

  • L. Hammond says:

I was in Niagara Falls, NY and Lewiston, NY last Wed. and was hoping to photograph political lawn signs. To my surprise, I only saw a few for local candidates but NOT ONE for either Obama or Romney, and we drove around several neighbourhoods in search of them. I saw one anti-Obama sign, and on street posts many flyers inviting people to meet democratic politicians at an upcoming meeting. Several people I spoke with indicated that they were Obama supporters but asked to remain anonymous.
