A blast from my hockey past

By TheAngelForever | March 13, 2009

Admit it, there are times that people are shocked to learn something about you. Most people know that I started off in college doing one thing and then switched to follow my dream of teaching. What people may not know is that for several years I had season tickets for our local hockey team.

Yes, I was a huge hockey fan.  Not only did I have season tickets, I had fabulous seats. I sat behind the home team’s bench, just a few rows back on center ice. My seat was so close that I could actually hear the players and coaches on the benches. I would travel around with friends to games that were near and some that were very, very far away. I even went to NHL training camp several times during the fall.

At one point, our team had a hockey jersey auction. I bid on a game worn jersey of my favorite player. I won and wore it for games from that point on. Now that same hockey jersey sits in my closet. I actually took the jersey out the other day and wore it for Purim. Funny thing, it felt amazing. It reminded me of those fun days back when I went to games to escape from the stress of college. Best of all, it was cozy and warm. Perhaps I need to take the jersey and my hubby and boys to a hockey game one day soon.

Guess who?!

So my question this week is:

What is something from your early adult years that someone may be shocked to learn about?

I had a really hard time staying the night at friend’s houses when I was a kid. Even up until about sixth grade, I’d sometimes call my mom in the night to come get me! What a nerd! I’m embarassed about it now, but also, now that I’m a parent, I wonder if there was something else going on. Maybe it was a belated reaction to my parents’ divorce?

I noticed the RiverRats Jersey in the Purim pics but didn’t say anything. :o) I’m huge into hockey. I have to admit, I was even trying to figure out who the player would have been.

Can I answer with the same thing? LOL I miss my old hockey jerseys. Like yours, they just sit in the back of my closet, collecting dust. I still go to games, with Bryan, but it’s not the same as what we all used to do. Those were some fun years!!

I think you should definitely have a family outing to a hockey game. I’ve always wanted to go to one but never have. Maybe someday. As for something I did in early adult years, hmmm, I rode a motorcycle for several years. A 1980 harley sportie. It was a blast.

Honestly I am a young adult so since entering young adult hood I haven’t changed much yet. But I think people might be surprised to know that I love a lot of hip hop music and as a teenager listened to a lot of it. I’m a very clean cut kind of person and typically listen to Top 40 pop music so it surprises people when they hear certain rap / hip hop singers that I like.

If you have been on my blog (you have) you know I have kids. When I was younger I never wanted children. I was a person who would not hold a new baby or any baby for that reason. I was not comfortable with kids. Thankfully God had a different plan for my life and made me a mom. By far the best thing to happen to my life because I love my kids and being a mom (hopefully that shows in my blog).

At 19, I had to stay home to take care of my ill stepmother, brother and the elderly patients of my stepmother (who lived in our home — she is a nurse who had a license to care for people like a nursing home setting). And then my stepmother’s chronically ill friend and preschool son moved in with us too. I was supposed to be in college and out having fun, and instead I was taking care of a lot of ill people. I was really depressed.

I love partying with friends until the wee hours of the morning. I had very kind, understanding and lenient parents. They allowed me to enjoy my college years but they were always there to guide me. Good thing all that partying didn’t affect my grades. I knew how to balance my social life with my academics.

I love that you still have the jersey! My surprising item is that I did singing telegrams in college. No, not gorillas or stripper-grams, simply a red velvet jacket, black pants, my voice and me. For a music major, it was a great summer job!
