Kindergarten Kid Take Two

In our part of the country, we do not head back to school until after Labor Day. We have an extra winter break to save on heating, so school does not get out until the June 22. This summer has been a whirl wind for me. There were days that were amazing, and yes there were days that dragged and I could not wait until TechyDad got home. Of course, I would not change the fact that I have been home with the boys since JSL was born.

It’s hard to believe that now, five years later, my little guy is ready to be a kindergarten kid. This may be my second time sending a child to start school, but I think it is more difficult this time around. JSL is my “baby” and he’s been with me all of these years. In addition to this, we are not at the same school that NHL started in years ago. It’s all new to me in this building and I have to admit – it is a little overwhelming.

My Kindergarten Kid 2012

Thank goodness JSL seems very excited about kindergarten. We went earlier in the week to orientation where he met both of his teachers and was able to explore his classroom. After we took a pile of papers out of his cubby, we sat down by his seat for him to do a little assignment for his teachers.

As soon as I read the instructions, he was ready to go. He wrote his name and got started. He knew exactly what he wanted to draw for his new teachers and when finished I asked to take a quick photo.

As the other children finished, the teachers called them over to the rug in the front of the room. They read The Kissing Hand  (one of my favorites) to the group while parents worked on filling out some of the papers given to us. Then, the kids talked about the story, asked questions, and even parents had the opportunity to inquire about things.

As I get ready to send another kiddo into kindergarten, it inspired my question this week:

What kindergarten or elementary school memory is one of your favorites and why? It could be from your childhood or one of your children’s if you have any.

It's Me

  • Seeing the smiles on my sons’ faces as they entered Kindergarten on their first day.

  • Seeing how much Princess Nagger took to her Kindergarten teacher – and vice versa – knowing that PN’s quirkiness was going to be embraced by her quirky teacher. ;) She still talks about her Kindergarten teacher to this day and mentions every time she sees her in the hall she gives her a big hug. :)

It’s really going to be a big adjustment for you having *both* kids in school now, isn’t it? That’ll be me next year… :)

Three of my four children each had the same kindergarten teacher and she is wonderful! We feel blessed that they had such a good start to their school experience.

I always enjoyed my kids kindergarten classroom and did it again with the grandkids. Kindergarten will always be special to me because I worked in Kinder classes for over five years.
The last day of school before my youngest started kinder, I suddenly realized that it was in fact the last day it would ver be just me and Todd. I cried and bought him a special treat.
I remember taking a small rug to kindergarten (40+ years ago) to lay on during nap time. Nap time! That is when kindergarten was for learning numbers, ABCs and colors. Now children graduate kindergarten as authors and mathematicians!

Aww, such a sweet post. I think that it will be harder for me with my second baby too… Thankfully that’s still a ways away (he’s three months old). :) Good luck to your Kindergarten kid!

My favorite kindergarten memory was making things out of clay which I brought home. I think they are still in a box somewhere!

My kids went to a Montessori school when they were in kindergarten. I would volunteer one morning a week to listen to readers. Sometimes, I would bring in bagels for the kids. I totally made their day!

    Have a great weekend!

  • I agree. The second time sending a child off is the hardest. This time around I was all shaky and vomity and just nervous and overwhelmed. It was as if it was my first day.

My daughter didn’t even skip a beat. She rushed in all excited and couldn’t wait to begin school! Didn’t even give mama a hug. Oy!

She’s been wanting to go to school for the past 3 years now!

Sigh. I miss her so much.

Good luck with the transition for you and your love.

I would say Kindergarten for both kids…one I followed behind the school bus and the youngest wouldn’t take the bus the first day. By the 3rd day he got on the bus and I waited for him in front of the school. :)
