Crikey, what a touching book! (Review)

l remember the morning of September 6, 2006. We woke up to the news that Steve Irwin – aka The Crocodile Hunter had been killed by a sting ray. JL and I sat there in disbelief. I began to cry and could not stop. All I could think about were Terri, Bindi, and Bob – Steve’s family. Bob was only a few months younger than NHL at the time. How do you tell a child that age that their daddy is not coming back home to see him? It hit hard. Only a day later I found out that I was expecting #2 and I continued to cry over Steve Irwin.

I have many happy memories of watching The Crocodile Hunter and snuggling up on the couch with JL when we were first married. We would sit there on snowy days and tune into Animal Planet and watch in awe of Steve and Terri’s amazing adventures. Our favorite days were the marathons of the shows. Were they crazy? No, they were doing everything to show all of us how wonderful animals are and why we should help in their mission to preserve their habitats and save wildlife.

A few weeks back Terri Irwin, Steve’s widow, was on a few talk shows promoting her new book Steve & Me. Since I have always been fascinated with their shows and was so saddened by the loss of Steve I wanted to read the book. Yesterday I finished the book with tears in my eyes. Reading how Bob would sit in his bath and cry for his daddy just pulled at my heart strings.

Steve & Me is not a traditional autobiography, instead it is a compilation of stories written by Terri about how she met, fell in love, married, started a family, and ultimately lost her soul mate in Australia. Terri writes beautiful stories about Steve and her love for animals and how they continued this with their children. Reading about his love of being a daddy and doing everything for his kids and their future at the Australia Zoo they called home.

What struck me most was how Terri stated over and over that Steve had always known he would pass away young. He just wished it was not done by a crocodile, since that would hurt all of his years of work. Thanks to this premonition he worked even harder to do more during his time here with us.

NHL knows who Steve Irwin is and loves to watch Wiggly Safari where they are based at the Australia Zoo with the Irwin family. He even puts goggles on from time to time to play Croc Hunter. CRIKEY!

We hope to continue the tradition of watching old episodes of The Crocodile Hunter with NHL and JSL to show them the beauty of animals in the world. In addition to this we have started to watch Bindi the Jungle Girl (a show that started to film just before Steve’s untimely death).

I am going to end with a poignant quote from Terri’s book that Steve said after major controversy was in his life:

"Crocodiles are easy," Steve said. "They try to kill and eat you. People are harder. Sometimes they pretend to be your friend first."

R.I.P. Stevo and know your family and friends are doing a wonderful job keeping your dream alive. One day I hope to visit your zoo and watch the cockatoos in their native land.

Twilight – Book Review

Thanks to several people talking up the book Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, I decided to get a copy to read. So Jessica at Kerflop and Kim, I blame both of you (and others) for making me obsessed with finishing the book this weekend. Hey, I wanted to get a jump start on New Moon (book two in the series) while I had some time. Honestly this series has become quite popular with adults and young adults alike. Much like the Harry Potter books, only different – LOL!

Who knew I would be interested in a vampire book? I surely did not. Still I was intrigued with all of the talk of Edward, Bella and Jacob. I must say I was beyond pleasantly surprised. I LOVED the characters. Meyer did a wonderful job leading the reader through the book and setting up the story. I was curious from the start on how Bella would find out about Edward’s secret. My favorite parts were when Bella went to meet the Cullen family and heard how most of the members became vampires. I was beyond hooked at that point.

I do not usually like things that are too suspenseful, but once again this book changed my feelings. I thoroughly enjoyed the end of the book when Bella was chased from the Forks. I wondered how Edward was going to save the day (hello – not spoiling anything here . . . just knew there were many books in the series). Now can not wait to see how it continues since the book left us on the edge of our seat. Thank goodness I have the next one here ready to begin soon.

Another interesting thing to note is there will be a Twilight movie coming out. Meyer has lots of updated information about this on her website. In addition to this she has announced that she is also writing a series of books that show Edwards point of view as opposed to Bella’s from Twilight. A really neat approach that will keep readers happy for years to come!

So, if you need a great book to read and want to get sucked into an enchanting series . . . check these out!

The Guy Not Taken – Book Review

Last summer my friend introduced me to the author Jennifer Weiner. I instantly fell in love with her books since they were easy to read and could take you into another world with interesting characters. A new book of hers was released this summer. Unlike the others, this was not a novel. The Guy Not Taken is a selection of short stories by Weiner.

This book was good, but not a favorite. I think what I realized while reading this book was I like novels and am not a huge fan of short stories. I enjoy getting to know characters and following them for a few hundred pages. The stories here were great and I found myself wishing for more of several of them. It was a nice read, but assisted me in knowing about my preferences for reading.

Now I am off to look at the pile of books I have waiting for me to read next.

Childhood book memories

Books are very important in our house. Not only because I’m a teacher, but because JL and I both recall reading a lot when we were children.

We recently starting getting HBO free for a few months. Some of the mommies on a group mentioned a good show to DVR. So I started to DVR HBO Storybook Musicals. I had heard that there was "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst. This was a favorite when I was growing up. We missed that at first, but one of the first recorded was "Lyle, Lyle Crocodile" by Bernard Waber. NHL instantly fell in love with Lyle and wanted to see it over and over during those weeks that he was home with me

Then one day I saw a commercial for a show called George and Martha. I was curious, could it be THE George and Martha that I loved when I was a child? Sure enough it was a show with Nathan Lane as the voice of George based on the books by George Marshall. When I was a kid, we all used to fight in my elementary school to take out these books. I once again programmed the DVR to record these shows for NHL to enjoy. We all loved them. They were adorable and made the books come alive.

During a rainstorm last Saturday we decided to head to the bookstore to use up a gift card that NHL had received. We went in and saw a few books. Then I suggested looking for a Lyle the Crocodile book and possibly George and Martha as well. Here’s a photo of the books NHL picked out.

Since we bought these they have traveled all over in his backpack. He loves them and wants us to read them to him all of the time. It’s so nice when some books are timeless and can be shared with your children.

Your Big Break – book review

I was finally able to read another book after finishing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The book I just finished in a few sittings was Your Big Break by Johanna Edwards. Last summer I read her first book The Next Big Thing and loved it. Once again this book was engaging, cute and the characters were easy to get to know. It is a great summer book to read. The story is funny and makes you want to keep reading to see what happens to Dani next. Although pretty far fetched at times I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Edwards sense of humor and look forward to reading her next book.

Now it’s off to select my next book to read.
