For the Love of Crafting

Dear JSL.

You have become quite the little crafter. Watching this develop and seeing your face when you are busy working makes me smile, especially when you share your beautiful work with everyone. You are a lot like me and want to draw, color, make projects, and do fun art items. You like playing Nintendo DS, but would most likely pick a craft if you had the option. At school, I have noticed that your projects are also changing.

Kindergarten Pumpkin Art

Last year in nursery school, if you had made this pumpkin, I know it would have been one hue. Yes, that pumpkin would have been 100% blue. You could have used blue glitter and other blue items to accomplish this task. This year, it is much different. You are into patterns, rainbows, and adding colors to everything. I love watching your creativity soar. Thanks to this passion, we signed you up for Art Club and you had your first session this week. I went along with you and you adored the different projects. It was so much fun watching you explore new and different items.

Art Club Project

I can not wait to see more of your projects in the weeks to come. I am also looking for more exciting items to do over winter break together and beyond with you.

Love,

Mommy

Searching for iPad Apps

The other day, a very special package arrived and fulfilled every wish that I had about one day owning a tablet.

New iPad

I still have to name her, although perhaps it is a him (not too sure how to check for that). Still, our unnamed iPad has quickly become a favorite family friend thanks to the people that Sweet Pickles who supplied the prize from a Twitter party and the fun Sweet Pickles books loaded on it.

Thank you to Sweet Pickles

Since I have not focused a lot on apps for an iPad, I am now searching for some. Ones that would be good for a 9 year old who loves math and science, and a ready to learn to read 5 year old. The boys are thrilled that we can now get some of the Disney apps that we could not before, like Jake’s Never Land Pirate School. Secretly, I have fallen in love with the Fix-It Felix app.

Disney iPad apps

I should not forget TechyDad and me. I am still looking for some photo options in case I am away and want to blog on the iPad. So far, the WordPress app is not as user friendly as the one on my Droid. I already have the Kindle and OverDrive Media apps so I can read and listen to books.

This week my question to you is:

Do you have a favorite iPad app? I would love to know what you, your kids, and others enjoy. If you do not have an iPad or tablet, what app intrigues you the most that you have heard of. One other item, any name suggestions that start with an “I” for the new family member?

It's Me

FYI – Do not forget to enter my current giveaway for Marlow and the Monster (ends 11/14). It is a great book for kids that would make a great holiday gift.

Disclosure: I won the iPad during a Sweet Pickles sponsored Twitter party.

Teaching Kids the Value of Money

Money is something that is hard for adults to understand at times, especially working on budgets. That does not mean that we should not teach our children the value of money, how we earn it, save it, and buy something. Two years ago, I started to think about this topic and as we head back into the holiday season, think this topic is quite relevant.

The-Allowance-Game-Flickr-by-photophonic-300x225The holiday season is coming. With that, kids will start to make lists of items that they would like as presents. Budgets continue to be tight in a lot of households.  This made me think about teaching kids about the real value of money.

What does a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, or dollar really mean to a child?

To many elementary aged children, it may not mean much. They understand that items have prices. They see that we exchange money for services or goods. Still, do they understand what a dollar can really get them and how much time is needed to earn said money? The answer is most likely they do not. In school, teachers show children how to count currency. This is a great start, but real world lessons may work best.

My oldest son is now in fourth grade. When he was in kindergarten, we were planning our first family visit to Walt Disney World. TechyDad and I decided to try something. We did not want to do a traditional allowance system with NHL. Instead, we had goals for things that needed to be done. We rewarded him with specific coins to put away for Disney. Our theory was that he would have the money that he earned to spend on something he wanted, no questions asked. He quickly learned that his desires could not be obtained with the funding he had. NHL was proud of the Mickey Mouse wallet he bought and made a goal to earn more money for something larger next time.

When I was about NHL’s age, I know I received an allowance. I do not really recall what I did to earn my money. I believe it may have been taking care of my parakeets. What I do remember is learning to save money for items. I set goals for items that I really wanted. For over three years, I saved up for my own television. Then, I pooled money for my first Nintendo system.

Through real world experiences, NHL is slowly learning more about the value of money. We keep integrating new items into the mix. One of the possibilities is an allowance.

Does your child have an allowance? If they do, what types of chores do they do and how do you determine the proper amount to pay them?

I would love some input since many of us are probably curious about the same thing. I have to admit that I am not too sure about a traditional allowance. I tend to think that each family member has responsibilities that need to be done within the house. Still, I know having money to earn was a HUGE part of growing up for me.

Disclosure: Parts of this post were previously published on a project I worked on. The text is mostly the same, but I placed a new introduction to go along with a topic that continues to be important.

Eat, Drink, & Be Merry

Trips to Disney are all about having a magical time, especially when you go with family and get to see old friends, and make new ones. Thanks to time at Walt Disney World, I have met some amazing people and had world class meals. Here are some photos of recent trips and our food, beverages, and merriment that go along with the theme of the Disney Wordless Wednesday.

Get Out and Vote

Today is the day that many of us have been waiting for for well over a year. The day that we get our chance to vote for the candidate that we want to run our country.

Vote Today - Election Day 2012

I know who I am voting for, but I am not going to tell you who to vote for. I just want to make sure that every American has the ability to get to a polling place to exercise their right to vote. If you have children, take them with you. This is a great educational experience for them. You are also showing your children that you are taking the right to vote seriously.

No matter what the outcome of the elections, I am just glad to have a short time with no items in my mailbox, no robo-callers, and no annoying political commercials.
