Sitting up to play and still sick

Today was a rough day for my little monkey. He has hardly smiled and did not really nurse much. Late this morning I saw just how miserable he was when he cried he wanted to eat, but was in too much pain. I gave him Motrin and after a while he fell asleep from crying so much. JSL just was not his happy, smiley self.

These photos were taken Saturday night just before we realized he had a fever. He’s playing with one of his favorite toys. This is the Sesame Street Atom that Uncle I bought for NHL when he was first born. It is a really great toy for babies to play with when on the floors rolling around, or to practice sitting up with. As you can see, JSL has gotten VERY good at sitting up on his own, even while playing. You will also note he quickly bends in half to try to eat said toy. Ah, the joys if teething!

Tomorrow we just hope not to visit our doctor to have him checked. Tonight was 48 hours since he started the antibiotic, so maybe we will be on our way to being healthy. If things go well my plan is to head to NHL’s school tomorrow to watch his swim lesson. If not we will head to the doctor and take care of preliminary packing to visit Uncle I, Aunt M and to meet Cousin S this weekend.

Visit to Uncle I = Sickies

*Yawn*

Why must someone always get sick before visiting my brother and his family? Seriously there is always something just before, on the car ride there or during the visit that crops up. Mind you I have a hypothesis that it’s only since he moved to the city/area he’s in now. So Uncle I and Aunt M . . . maybe you need to move back to the precious location

Luckily JSL appears to be feeling better. He’s still a little off, but no fever, he’s nursing and thank goodness giving me soggy diapers. It was a LONG 14+ hours of not drinking and dry diapers. The only issues are the little turd angel not taking his medicine. Who knew a baby that is not even 6 months old could put.

Not only does he know how to dodge his head from the syringe, but he also clamps his mouth shut (dang he’s stubborn and strong) and gags and spits the cra stuff out. I will say this antibiotic smells nasty. Poor kid has only had mommy milk and rice cereal and now this medicine, Tylenol and Ibuprofen. He is never going to trust mommy again.

In an attempt to assist with things I called the pharmacy we normally go to and asked if there was anything I could do. They told me to come in and I could pay a nominal fee to have flavor added to it. I brought it tonight and I am happy sad to say it still smells nasty and it didn’t go down much better. In fact I think less may have gone in. Poor little monkey also spit up a lot of it during a diaper change with daddy, so who knows if anything stayed down. Then before bed I noticed he has a rash. I may just have to call our doctor’s office tomorrow about the rash on his face and spitting up.

I would seriously like a small dull moment please. Here’s some JSL art to end with:

Sick baby update

Unfortunately JSL seems to be worse tonight. I sucked it up and took him to Urgent Care at 5:00. We got home at 7:00. The so called "doctor" said he had an ear infection and gave us a script for antibiotic and told me to give him motrin for the pain/discomfort.

Once home I tried to feed him. He had not nursed since 4:00 and refused to wincing in pain. I pumped thinking that it would be easier for him. Nope nothing. I went to get the medicine and left JSL with JL. When I got home he was sleeping and we woke him up for the antibiotic.

Talk about fun. . . he was not too responsive. We finally were able to get him to wake up and got the medicine ready.  It was horrible. He kept gagging on the taste of the medicine and then wanted to eat, but we couldn’t get him to drink milk. We tried a medicine dropper, spoon, fast flow bottle and slow flow bottle. After a little while JL saw he was trying to root. So I tried nursing again. He ate a teeny little bit. He was so miserable. There has to be something else to this and not just his ear. I may call our doctor to head in there tomorrow if he has a bad night.

*sigh* . . . . it’s going to be a LONG night.

What a morning – fever & fires!

Last night when we got home from dinner out with family we noticed that JSL was feeling a little warm. We pulled out the thermometer and it was 99 or so. Nothing too alarming, but then again we don’t really know what his "normal" temperature is.

We got him to sleep and at 1:00 new time NHL was up with a nightmare. He would not settle. He came into out bed at about 1:40. There ends most of my sleep.

At 4:30 JSL woke up. JL went to change his diaper and I set up to nurse him. When they came back in he was choking on saliva, his stomach was making awful noises and he started to dry heave. He was miserable. We took his temperature again since he seemed SO hot. It was still under 100. He nursed and fell back asleep and went back to his crib.

NHL woke back up in our bed at 6:30 or so. He would not settle back down, so J took him into the other room. At one point JSL woke up and went into JL’s arms and fell asleep on his tummy. I woke up and went to see everyone at about 8:00. When I went to nurse JSL I felt his head. He was burning up, lethargic, moaning, and had glazed over eyes. This scared the heck out of me with our family history of febrile seizures (I had 3, JL had 2 and NHL had 1). I took his temperature and it was about 101 and going up quickly. I put in a call for our doctor and they called back as I was getting the Tylenol. We pulled him out of the blanket sleep and just at that point I heard a commotion outside the house.

We opened up the shade to see fire trucks galore outside. I mean 4-6 of them, 2-3 police cars and other "official" fire cars (chief and things). There were a dozen or so firemen outside with hoses. We couldn’t tell at first where they were going, then it sunk in. OMG – the house right across the street was on fire. I tossed on a coat and went outside to see if the kids that are often there were out safely. They were being shuttled to the house down the street. At this point they were heading to the back of the house with axes. Thank goodness everyone was safe (the mother is in Colorado). Not sure about the damage. We only know the fire started in the basement, they got out and that’s it.

Thanks to the hydrants being used everyone has brown water now. They said by the evening it should be fine. Dad went out and got us water to have. Now we just hope that this fever leaves as mysteriously as it arrived.  We are also going to install the other fire alarms that we have for around the house – nothing like a close tragedy to wake you up on that.

Hopefully the day settles down for us and the poor people across the street.
