Garbage galore

The new refrigerator is finally here and phase one of  "Project Clean the House" is finished. The proof is below.

Ton of trash Doing our part to recycle

This would be all of the garbage and recycling that we set out. Please excuse the gross nature of the photos (the kids are much nicer to look at), especially three of the cans that were original to the house.

The lesson learned, we need to purge "stuff" more often. Having open space for the boys to play in is important. Once we move toys and clean upstairs we will have a great playroom.

So here are my questions to you this week as we plan phase two of "Project Clean the House":

What are the best ways to store and organize toys? Remember my boys are 5 and 21 months old. Have you ever had a yard/garage/tag sale? If you have had any, tips would be greatly appreciated. We will likely have a sale in the Spring.

Memories from THAT night in February

Yesterday came and went like any other Sunday. In the back of my minds for weeks, even months, I have been anxious about the day. Why February 15 you ask? On February 15, 2008 I nearly lost my son forever. JSL had a febrile seizure on that horrible night. We knew we would likely encounter one with him since NHL had one when 11 months old, I had several and so did JL. Typically febrile seizures are nothing to worry about and kids come out of them with no problem. That night things were very different.

We suspect that JSL had a virus that caused a lot of phlehm. We took him out of his crib because we heard his labored breathing and then noted he was feverish. For some reason I just knew things were not going to be good. I called my parents and they rushed over to our house. Thank goodness Nana was here because she saved my baby. While holding JSL he went into a transe like state and we all knew he was having a seizure. What I was not ready for was my baby’s body turning gray and going lifeless in my arms.

NHL had turned blue from the temporary stop in breathing when he had his febrile seizure, but within seconds (although it seems like hours at the time) he began breathing on his own. JSL did not do this. He was gray and lifeless and we could hear there was a blockage in his airway. My mother stepped in as I stood there paralized with fear. She gave him a big pat on the back and we heard the plug in his airway move. She then put him down onto the bed and gave him those oh so precious rescue breaths. He quickly started to breathe on his own and was losing some of the gray color by the time the paramedics arrived.

We were rushed to the hospital where JSL and I stayed for four long nights. To this day we still do not know exactly what caused the fever and the blockage in his airway. Prior to the febrile seizure he had been suffering from a rather intense battle with double pinkeye. The fever did not go down right away and eventually they found an ear infection that had been hidden behind a lot of fluid in his ears. Seeing a child in a hospital bed is the worst thing, but when it is your child it hits even worse.

Sleeping peacefully

I know that for many more years I will always worry whenever JSL’s temperature goes up. The fact that he had his febrile seizure at 102 degrees is alarming, but he has a lower than "normal" body temperature to begin with. I now cherish even more than before the little things. Watching the boys interact and seeing how they grow is amazing to me. Below is a photo of the reunion a little over a year ago. NHL never saw JSL in the hospital and had to make sure his baby brother was a-ok.

Coupon Crazy

With the tough economic times more and more people are clipping coupons. Count me into this mix. JL and I work as a team to do this. He has been quite pleased with the amount that I have saved using coupons at places like CVS, BJ’s and the grocery store.

One problem we have had is file folder that we used for the coupons. Here it is:

The old coupon carrier

This was great when we first started to be serious about couponing, but we quickly outgrew it. There were not enough sections for different categories. Plus when we began buying extra Sunday papers it was filled too quickly. Here is a fresh new pile of coupons that I cut yesterday and another stack of inserts ready to be done.

Ready to sort Lots more coupons to cut

Many bloggers have been talking about systems to use with coupons. Several mentioned binders and baseball card holders for the coupons. We had the binders and tabs already at home. A week or two ago we bought the card holders. This weekend we finally started the process of moving things into the binder.

Inside the new binder system 1 Inside the new binder system 2

I usually pull out the soon to expire or expired coupons, cut new coupons and JL organizes them into the binder. It is a great system and we hope to save even more with it. Here is what I bought on my most recent CVS trip. I was using the old coupon system. I had coupons from the Sunday paper, CVS coupons, and ECBs. I spent less than $2.50 out of pocket on everything in the photo.

All for under $2.50

Hopefully with this new coupon binder we will be able to save even more!

Happy New Year to the trees

You may be wondering why I am wishing a Happy New Year to the trees in February. Today is Tu B’Shevat which is the New Year the trees and could be compared to Arbor Day. In Israel, the almond trees are starting to bloom, so it makes more sense than here with the snow still on the ground.

Although Tu B’Shevat is a minor holiday, it is the time of year that we celebrate trees and all that they do for us. Customs for the holiday including planting a tree and eating dried fruits and nuts.

Last week at Hebrew School, NHL made a decoration for Tu B’Shevat. Yesterday, the entire school had a party which included special cake that had dates in it. NHL said it was a lot of fun and then they practiced their Israeli dances for their upcoming festival. JSL also received a book in the mail as part of the PJ Library about the holiday. The book is a great introduction to children about this special holiday and why we celebrate.

Time to thank the trees

As you can see, Hebrew School has been a great way for NHL to learn more about our Jewish customs. He has a great time and is starting to learn the Hebrew alphabet. To my surprise he already knows how to write his name in Hebrew. We are well on our way to preparing for his Bar Mitzvah in about seven years. . . OY!

Crafty creations

It has been a stressful week here in Angel Land. Some of the culprits include:

  • Room parent phone calls – Managed to get people to bring in napins, cups and juice. Nobody wants to do cupcakes, so it looks like I shall do that next week to send in on Friday.
  • Bird fiasco on Wednesday – So many things I wanted to get done were not able to get accomplished since I was waiting for return phone calls.
  • NHL’s allergies have been out of control – I feel helpless and wish there was something more I can do for him. Several medicine changes have been made and we are hoping one of them works. So afraid of another Singulair situation taking control of my child.
  • Finalizing plans for Disney World – The only reason this was slightly stressful was thanks to Disney not posting their hours in a timely fashion. This weekend we are able to make our dining reservations, so today/tomorrow we will finalize those items.

Thanks to all of this, I was exhausted at night and never did anything special for my 2 year Blogoversary. Oh well, I can figure that out for next week perhaps. Hmmm. . . . .

When the boys are in bed I have been knitting again. It is something that is mindless and works well to take my attention away from the stress at hand. Of course, I have been stuck making the same knitted cloth for a while. I now have well over 25 of them (need a cloth anyone?). Here are a few:

Lots of colors

One of these days I will break out of my shell and make something different. For now these are quick and easy and satisfy my need for knitting. I may try a pair of mittens soon, my friend is supposed to give me a great pattern to try on straight needles.

So here is my question to you this week:

What type of craft activity do you like to do? When did you start doing this and why do you enjoy it?
