Movin’ on up . . .

Last weekend (August 5th) it was finally time for JSL to move on up from the Pack N’ Play to his big crib. He was getting cramped in the tight space of the bassinet and needed more area to roll over and get stuck in.

It was love at first sight!

Here’s JSL checking out Snoopy on the bumpers:

Check out how much room he has:
Look how tiny JSL is in his crib

All smiles in his new palace:

Soon after getting into the crib for the first time put JSL onto his tummy. Within minutes he curled up and was sucking on his hand and fell asleep. Clearly he really liked his new sleeping arrangements.

See how much room he has:

The crib has helped so much. He really love it and enjoys rolling over and stretching in it. He likes to look at Snoopy and most importantly sleep 9+ hours most nights!

How do you forget a child?

JL called me on his way home to tell me about a note that was in all of the cubby’s today at NHL’s nursery school/daycare center. Here’s what the note said:

Dear Parents,
Today one of the classes was playing at the park. When they left the park they checked that they had all of the children and made a mistake. One of the children was left. Fortunately two hospital employees saw her, brought her into the hospital and called the center. The assistant director went and got her. She was fine and not aware that she was lost. I called the Abuse Hot Line and reported the incident and called the Office of Children and Family Services, our licensing agent and reported the incident. They will be doing an investigation involving parents and staff. I will be meeting with classrooms to make sure that procedures are in place so that this does not happen again.
The teachers that were involved are wonderful, long term employees. They are devastated that this happened. Please come and talk with me if you have any questions.
                                                                                     The Daycare Director

Needless to say I was floored. I know you can make mistakes, but how can you make a mistake counting only 10-14 kids? I am a teacher and know it’s tough to keep track of kids (granted 3-4 year old must be worse), but I did it with 32+ kids on field trips to places like NYC and Boston.

So I think I am going to call Madame Daycare Director tomorrow. I think I should be able to know if it was my child’s room. Especially given recent events that happened in the room with the chin incident. (Refresher – the day before NHL split his chin open in the bathroom by slipping on water I witnessed 4 children in the bathroom playing with NO teachers and a wet floor. I had planned on called to report it, but had to meet my child in the ER for stitches before I was able to make it there).

The good news – next Friday (NHL’s 4th B-day) is his last day there. After that SAHM is here with both boys until NHL starts public PreK.

JSL Big Melon up!

JSL is a tummy sleeper. Thanks to this he usually curls up when I try to do tummy time with him and he never wants to play. Well today I found inspiration for him. I placed one of NHL’s toy cars in front to make him pick up his big old melon off the floor. WHOA!  The kid has muscles when he wants to use them. Prior to this he’s lifted his head for a few second here and there. Well, today was mighty different. Today he had his head up for several minutes (3-5). After that he had enough and I put him in his swing. In less than 5 minutes he was chomping on his bib and rocked asleep. The little monkey was all tuckered out from the work. Mind you he also played on his gym mat for quite a while before that on his back kicking his legs and flailing his arms.

I am more watchful with JSL and his milestones sine NHL had low muscle tone and was hypotonic. If JSL doesn’t do certain things by a specific time I will be first on line to call Early Intervention to have him evaluated. As I have learned the earlier you get therapy the better.

McFood wrappers needed!

Yesterday they released a study that showed that toddlers preferred food that was wrapped by McDonald’s. Sadly the food didn’t have to actually be from there, kids were just interested because of the wrapper. DUH! Even adults sadly fall for this. We automatically believe that things from certain retailers or brand names are better than others or even generic items. Here are some links to articles about this study:

Study: Food in McDonald’s wrapper tastes better to kids

Are you a cyberchondriac?

That was the question asked this morning on Today. An entire segment was done on the programs showing the views of people and doctors about this newly coined term describing the behavior in people.

Admit it. . . when you or someone in your family doesn’t feel well you go right to your computer and google the symptoms to try to do a self diagnosis. If you do this all of the time and jump to drastic diagnosis without seeing a medical professional, then you may be a cyberchondriac.

So what is cyberchondria? Some information on it can be found on  Wikipedia. Basically as was the case with books, people are self diagnosing. The difference is the internet allows for more information to get quickly and scare yourself. Most people think they have something horrible from the items found, when in reality it is usually something very different when they see their doctor. Another danger is someone may think they have something simple, not see their health care professional to save money. In the end they may be wasting valuable time to treat something serious like cancer.

So please be careful with what you read and be sure to see a doctor if things do not get better after a day or two.
