Birthday with Mickey

I have always dreamed about being at Walt Disney World for my birthday. This year, I am coming very close to this dream thanks to our trip for the New Fantasyland media event . You see, I will actually be leaving for home just hours before my birthday. Of course, this means I will be celebrating my birthday Friday evening.

Mickey Cupcake

TechyDad told me to pick out a restaurant to have my birthday dinner at. I really want to go to California Grill at The Contemporary Resort, but there were no reservation available. Since we want to be at Epcot and Hollywood Studios that evening, I looked at those locations, and The Boardwalk for options. In the end, I decided to try something new. When we had to cancel our Labor Day 2011 trip, one of our meals was going to be at Les Chefs de France. So yes, I will be eating at Epcot on my almost birthday in a French restaurant under the Eiffel Tower.

So my question to you this week:

If you could eat at any location and/or restaurant for your birthday, where would it be and why?

Being Brave and Channeling My Inner Merida

Disney’s Brave burst onto the scene last year and everyone was talking about Merida and how feisty she was. I recall people mentioning what a great role model she was for young girls. We finally got to sit down and watch Brave the other day. Our entire family was swept away into the movie. I adore it for many reasons. One of those is that Merida is not fixated on her appearance. She loves her hair, wants to keep it out, and literally tosses it into the wind.

The Disney princess has no problems allowing her frizzy, long, red hair fly. Imagine that – not spending a fortune trying to tame your tresses. While out and about after watching the movie, the wind kicked up and my hair was down. It was flying around. I noted to TechyDad that I was channeling my “Inner Merida” at the time. Of course, in hind sight, it was really my outer Merida.

Merida and her frizzy hair in Brave

This winter, I have a feeling I may toss my hair up, ease off the Frizz-Ease items pictured above and allow my hair to be free. Yes, I will be channeling Merida while I just keep swimming along from day to day. The reality is that frizzy hair or not, I need to spend more time focusing on more important things in life.

Can you identify with Merida in any way? I would love to know how you view this spunky princess and if you are comfortable letting your hair down.

New Fantasyland Here We Come

It is hard to believe that tomorrow morning, the new Fantasyland at Walt Disney World will officially open. Even more magical is that TechyDad and I will be there. Just a few years ago, we went to Mickey’s Toon Town for the last time, said goodbye to the old Winnie the Pooh playground, and watched as walls announced what would be coming to this enchanting space.

Tuesday Tales – How Do Dinosaurs Say Happy Chanukah?

While walking around the Scholastic Book Fair at school with my children, a book on the holiday table caught my eye. It was How Do Dinosaurs Say Happy Chanukah? by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Mark Teague. As long time fans who own many of the dinosaur books, the boys were very intrigued. I have to admit, I was as well. We decided to get some other books and wait to get the book out of the library before making the purchase. (FYI – I now wish I had bought it to support our school.)

How Do Dinosaurs Say Happy Chanukah

This book came out in September, along with How Do Dinosaurs Say Merry Christmas? and keeps the twelve year tradition of the series alive while teaching children about Chanukah. NHL and I have been reading the books since he was an infant. The first thing he immediately pointed out was the names of the dinosaurs were on each page, skillfully placed along side of them by Teague. Jane Yolen introduces readers to Chanukah traditions like the blessings over the menorah, chocolate Chanukah gelt, and playing dreidels. As always, Mark Teague’s illustrations with the popular dinosaurs are perfect and make the experience complete. Here is a quick look inside the book:

A look inside How Do Dinosaurs Say Happy Chanukah

We will definitely be buying a copy of this book for the boys for Chanukah. It will make a great addition to our holiday collection. I also hope to share this with JSL’s kindergarten class because I think they will appreciate the items in the book and I hope to bring in some things mentioned to share during Chanukah.

In case you were curious about the Christmas book, I have not read that one yet, but did see a book trailer for it from Scholastic and thought I would share.

Are you a fan of the How Do Dinosaurs book series? I would love to know your thoughts. As always, please share what you have read recently. Be sure to link up to your book posts in the comments below. Include something you read on your own, with a child, or someone else. Tuesday Tales are all about spreading the love for books.

Disclosure: Two Amazon Affiliate link are included in this post for the books mentioned. I will receive a percentage of money for the sale should you opt to buy the book through that link.

A Magical Moment with a Never Land Pirate

Magical Moment with Jake at Disney's Hollywood StudiosOne of the beautiful things about Walt Disney World is being able to watch your children’s interactions change with characters. My youngest has gone from hiding under tables at Chef Mickey in May 2009, to requesting a visit with a favorite pal to get an autograph before leaving.

In May, we were at Hollywood Studios in the morning for our last day of a family trip. JSL reminded us that we did not have Jake’s autograph in our book. After going on some rides and having breakfast, we went over to the Disney Junior area to meet up with Jake. Once again, the cast members who are limited to no words and only body language impressed me. Jake noticed JSL’s birthday button. The photo on the left was taken just after he pointed it out.

Then, NHL said something about what he was writing and Jake started to “joke” with him. He cracked NHL’s serious side and genuinely made him laugh and smile. The kids were even more in love with Jake.

A special moment with Jake from Disney Junior

When this was over and NHL read the message to JSL, the little guy’s shy smile came shining through.

High Five time with Jake

Two kids happy, smiling, and laughing. Yes, Jake had won my heart and I knew that this memory would be something that we would all remember for a long time.

Thank you Jake and Walt Disney World for yet another magical moment that we will never forget thanks to capturing it on camera.

Do you have a priceless moment with a Disney character? I would love to know all about it.
