Exederm ultra sensitive skin care (review/giveaway)

In our house, we have always been very careful about the products that we use on our skin. Since I have extremely sensitive skin, we are constantly on the lookout for products that contain no fragrance. The truth is, these types of products are quite hard to locate most of the time. Even if something says fragrance free, I have often found fragrance listed as one of the ingredients on the back of the bottle.

When the boys were born, we knew it was possible that they would have sensitive skin like me. NHL was diagnosed with eczema when he was about four. My little guy had patches on his body early on. Then just a few months back, I went to the dermatologist and found out that a funny looking spot on my leg was severe eczema (looks a little different on adults). I was told to ditch my Dial soap and use items that were more moisturizing when bathing and to follow up with a moisturizer after.

At about the same time, I was asked by Family Review Network to review some baby skin products by Exederm. This seemed like a great opportunity to try something that could help my family and our eczema.

About Exederm from their company:

We’ve worked with a team of experts to create a range specifically designed for eczema and dermatitis sufferers.

Too many personal care products contain ingredients that may irritate sensitive skin, especially for those with eczema or dermatitis – allergic reactions and rash are common.

Most everyday skincare products are actually designed for the average person – even some of those products laveled as ‘Sensitive’ or ‘Mild” or ‘Hypoallergenic’.

Many ‘natural’ or herbal products can be just as bad too!

ECZEMA & DERMATITIS SUFFERERS ARE NOT AVERAGE – and average skincare is just NOT good enough.

Exerderm offers an intelligent and common sense approach. We believe people with sensistive skin need to avoid irritants – why take risks?

The National Eczema Association honored exederm with 12 ‘Seal of Acceptance’ awards in acknowledgement of our products’ ultra sensitive formulations.

Exederm offers a variety of products for people with sensitive skin that may include eczema and dermatitis.

To help heal flare ups, there is Exederm Flare Control:

  • Helps heal eczema flare-ups
  • Fast soothing relief of itchy, red skin
  • Maximum strength without a prescription
  • America’s only paraben-free hydrocortisone cream

For hydration of sensitive skin, there is Exederm Intensive Moisture cream, body lotion and body oil:

  • Deeply moisturize dry or flaking skin
  • Soothes red, cracked or itchy skin
  • Ultra sensitive and non-irritating
  • Award winning formulations

To help avoid irritating triggers, Exederm Body Wash shampoo and conditioner

  • Ultra sensitive, non-irritating formulations
  • Rich, soap-free and non-drying wash
  • Low foam shampoo or healthy hair & scalp
  • SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) free

Exederm Trials

By the time the products arrived, my eczema flare up was under control, but keeping it that way is critical. My 2 year old son has a few patches on his body right now thanks to the dry winter. We decided to test the products on him one night in the bath tub. First, we used the body wash. We noticed that it did not have any smell. Wahoo – truly fragrance free like it promised! Hubby was able to lather it up a little on my homemade knit cotton washcloths. Unlike some of the body washes/soaps that we have used in the past, this one did not bother JSL. He kept playing with his toys and splashing like nothing was going on.

Then it was time to test out the shampoo. JSL still has cradle cap, so we need to really scrub his scalp to work at the scales. We were pleasantly surprised with the results. Hubby was quickly able to use a very small amount in his thick hair and work it around nicely. Check out how you can see it in his hair and not wonder if you have any in (photo above).

The little guy is not a fan of moisturizing, so I tried those on my skin after a shower. I really liked the Intensive moisturizer. It was really thick and worked nicely on my overly dry hands. Although it was thick, it still soaked into my hands quickly and did not leave me feeling slippery. My goal is to try to use the baby lotion on JSL. He really is dry in the winter and recently I have seen some small patches of eczema cropping up on him. I also tried the hydrocortizone cream on an itchy spot and unlike others it did not burn. It quickly soothed the area and was not bothering me anymore.

We will definitely be purchasing more of Exederm for our family since it works well and most importantly helps to protect our very sensitive skin.

Brotherly tickle attack

Dear NHL & JSL,

This week, the two of you have been amazing to watch. Sure you fight from time to time, but most of the time you have been great with each other. You will both pile onto NHL’s bed and read books together. Other times, you will go into your room and play with the train tracks. Several times, you both danced around in the living room listening to songs playing on Pandora Radio via the Roku Player. One of my favorite moments was captured Monday night. You were both ready for bed and jumped onto the couch. I was getting a new picture of JSL with Tigger. When he was done, NHL took it. The little guy was a little jealous of this. He decided to do a tickle attack on big brother. Since I was standing right there I took photos of the events.

Brotherly tickle attack

I hope that the two of you keep having fun together. One day, I may need to show this to myself to remember the days when you did not fight.

Love,

Mommy

A Magical 2nd Birthday at Disney World

When we planned our first ever full family trip to Disney World in May 2009, we realized that we would be there for JSL’s actual second birthday. I immediately asked TechyDad where he thought we should celebrate the little guy’s big day for dinner that evening. I called Disney Advanced Dining Reservations and made an ADR for Chef Mickey for the four of us. Within a short amount of time, we were going to be a party of six. I called Chef Mickey and at that point they only had very late reservations for our party of six. That was not going to work for us. I booked our first dinner at Disney there and figured we would try for something different on JSL’s birthday.

When the 90 day mark hit for our ADRs (now 180 days), I called in early that morning and after securing a time for Le Cellier, I asked about The Crystal Palace. We had eaten there on our honeymoon and had a wonderful breakfast. We figured we would try eating dinner there. The best part, we would be able to see Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and, my favorite, Eeyore. I told them that day that it was JSL’s actual second birthday and they said it would be on our reservation.

Fast forward to May. JSL got up that morning and received presents from Nana and Papa, as well as us. He fell in love with his Pup-Pup (aka Pluto) hat and Stitch backpack.

The Birthday Boy

We figured we would take it easy that day. We decided to head to Downtown Disney to do some shopping. The boys had a blast picking out stuffed animals and playing at the LEGO store.

Lots of shopping and fun

After that, we went back to Pop Century for lunch, exploring the grounds and some swimming.

Then, as we made our way to the Magic Kingdom, the sky turned an awful shade of gray and the rain came down in buckets.

Rainy evening at the Magic Kingdom

We eventually made our way to The Crystal Palace and dried off inside. When we sat down, we knew that NHL was finally good with the characters and hoped to get some decent photos. As the week went on, he warmed up to this process.

Big Brother at The Crystal Palace

Unfortunately, the birthday boy was not so thrilled. He cringed every time he saw Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore or Piglet coming around. After a while, he let Pooh Bear come close to the table. With Papa’s help, he touched Pooh’s nose. Soon after, Tigger came around and, without asking, JSL went to Tigger’s nose. We had a breakthough moment.

Progress is made

Several times during our meal, we told our server that it was JSL’s birthday. We saw several other tables celebrating birthdays while seated. NHL asked why they were not singing Happy Birthday to his little brother. Again, I said something to the server and she did nothing. As we left The Crystal Palace, I was asked how everything was. I decided I had to say something. I told them that I had made this reservation over 90 days prior for my son’s actual 2nd birthday. I told them that my older son was quite upset that his little brother was ignored. I was not as much upset, but wanted to know what I had done wrong. They went to our reservation. Sure enough, it was noted with the date we called. In addition to this, there was Mickey glitter on the table to signify to the server that there was a celebration. We won’t even go into the obvious of JSL wearing his birthday button:

The manager came over and told us that they were very sorry, it should not have happened. To make up for it (which we never asked for) they gave us a coupon for JSL to pick out any Tigger stuffed animal of his choice. So, instead of a cupcake and getting a Happy Birthday song, he got this:

The birthday boy and Tigger

Yes, Tigger was almost as big as JSL. The best part was trying to get this big orange critter back home on the airplane. Luckily, we had extra carry on bags that worked just for this occasion. Here is JSL with Tigger now:

Tigger today

Oh, and if you ever come over and hear us tell JSL to go and get Cupcake, that is just our pet name for this giant Tigger stuffed animal. Kuddos to Disney for fixing an "Oops" and making the little guy’s birthday even more magical.
