Phineas, Ferb and Kung Zhu Take 2

A little over a week ago, we had NHL’s family birthday party. As mentioned before, we planned on allowing time for the kids to play with the Kung Zhu’s that we were giving them. It was the perfect opportunity for them to do something fun while the adults talked. The day before the party, we came to the realization that it was just not possible to keep all items from our Kung Zhu universe out.

Battle Arena and Tanks

With a just starting to crawl baby and a few almost/barely three year olds in the mix, we decided to leave the Giant Battle Arena and the four tanks for all of the kids to enjoy. This really worked out well. As the kids were getting to know their Kung Zhu Hamsters, they were able to take turns with the tanks and use the battle area. Check out some of the action:

Some Kung Zhu battle action

The kids really did play with the Kung Zhu non-stop. I kept hearing them come into the kitchen as I was making things. Suddenly, I would look back and see a Kung Zhu and child run by. I think we kept the perfect amount of items out for our rather crowded space. The kids seemed to like the tanks and even tried putting them in the Battle Arena to see what would happen. I wish we had more photos, but they blurred a lot from chasing action – or TechyDad and I were in the kitchen getting things ready.

We had also planned on letting the kids make Kung Zhu inspired twinkie cakes, but due to two of the kids having food allergies it did not work out. NHL was disappointed with this and since there was no other Kung Zhu themed party things, I let him select another favorite. So Perry the Platypus, meet Azer, Thorn, and the rest of the Kung Zhu critters.

Phineas and Ferb B-day Style

There was also plenty of food for the humans and Kung Zhu’s to try. Of course, it makes me wonder if the Kung Zhu friends had anything to do with the great cake debacle. Hmmmm. . .

After playing and eating, it was time for presents.

Time for presents

NHL received some Ben Ten items, gift cards, books, a new lunch box and more to go with what he received on his actual birthday. Before we knew it, the time was up and everyone was heading home. We took lots of family photos at the end, which I will share later.

Thank you again to Kung Zhu and Mom Select for making this a second memorable party.

Monkey Monkey Music with Meredith LaVande (Review/Giveaway)

Music has always been an important part of my life. When I was little, I remember rocking out to favorites of my parents generation along with my own music. These days, childrens music has come so far. In addition to music that goes along with television programming, independent artists are stepping up and creating music that is genuinely appropriate for kids.

I was recently asked by Waldmania! to check out What Are The Odds? Monkey Monkey Music with Meredith LaVande. This CD is being released in a matter of days, on August 31. Since we are always looking to expose our boys to different music, we agreed to receive a complimentary CD for review.

More about What Are the Odds? and Meredith LeVande:

Monkey Monkey Music with Meredith LeVande

Here is an introduction about what Monkey Monkey Music is from the website.

Monkey Monkey Music is a children’s music program developed by Meredith LeVande, an educator and songwriter who has close to a decade of experience working with preschool aged children. Monkey Monkey Music is a continuously evolving project that’s committed to conscious and quality based music and media which puts the best interests of children first. Learning and music is a fun, joyous, experience for children, which is why Meredith’s collection of songs and live performances continuously engage both children and adults for years on end. Celebrations can be educational, and education should be fun which is why her shows, parties and programs are so successful.

Both Meredith’s live performances, and simple listening experiences galvanize and unify groups of people, both young and old to "jump high", "shake it loud," and celebrate the topics that reference the lives and desires of young children while fostering connections between groups of people as a whole.

What Are the Odds? is the second full length CD from LeVande’s Monkey Monkey Music project. It will be released on August 31, has a run time of 46 minutes for ages 2-7 and will cost $14.99. Here is a description from Amazon:

With What Are the Odds? Meredith LeVande has created something remarkable, finding the middle road between baby songs and pop band songs where kids lyrics are simply added to music that would otherwise be played for adults. Meredith’s music is not only child-friendly, it s truly child appropriate, having been created with the healthy growth of the child in mind.

 Tracks on the CD:

  1. Hello (New)
  2. What Are the Odds?
  3. Shake It Loud
  4. This Way, That Way
  5. In the Garden
  6. Wheels
  7. Air Guitar
  8. Frogs Eat Butterflies
  9. Circle
  10. Turn Your Body Around
  11. Bubbles
  12. Who’s a Knickin’?
  13. Silly Animal Friends
  14. Guess What I Am
  15. Willow Tree in the Wind
  16. Goodbye (New)

What we think:

From the moment we saw the titles of the songs on the CD, we were all focused on one in particular. A few months back, NHL wrote a poem at a school event called Butterfly and Frog. In the short and sweet poem the frog eats the butterfly, so "Frogs Eat Butterflies" intrigued us. It was interesting to note that the song is adapted from the Wallace Stevens poem "Frogs Eat Butterflies. Snakes Eat Frogs. Hogs Eat Snakes. Men Eat Hogs." This is NHL’s poem:

Poem on the Fly - by NHL

We wanted to see if this song made NHL’s first grade poem come alive even more. Yes, we went right to that song and then listen to the rest! The song begins by telling you to be careful who is in your company because they may be hungry. Then, it goes into describing how parts of the food chain works. Sharks eat seals, crumbs are a party for ants, and of course frogs eat butterflies. The country twang of the song is quite different from most of the other tracks on the CD, but it works perfectly for this title.

As a parent and teacher, I really liked how Meredith LaVande meshes learning into all of her songs. Not only are facts included, but favorites take on a new spin. The song "Wheels"  teaches children about different modes of transportation that include wheels. The chorus includes a new tempo and take of The Wheels on the Bus song, a favorite of children and parents because it gets everyone moving. I also appreciate that the Monkey Monkey Music website includes the lyrics to all of the songs. This is often helpful when you want to make sure your child is trying to sing along. JSL really enjoyed "Hello" when we listened. It really made him listen and get involved. He was able to clap his hands, sway sideways, jump up and down, spin, shake it silly and then make monkey noises.

I have been trying to put my finger on LaVande’s singing style and it is hard to do. When I listen to her voice and the background beat to a lot of the songs, it makes me think of female musicians from the 50’s and 60’s. I could just imagine her belting out tunes with a band at a Sock Hop.

The only criticism that TechyDad and I had was on the title song. In "What Are the Odds?" it has the following lyrics:

But what are the odds?
Let’s count the odds
Let’s count the odds to 9
1 … 3 … 5 … 7 … and 9
9
9 planets counting Pluto
Let’s say them in a row
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto

Do you see a problem here? Why yes, Pluto is no longer a planet. When we grew up it was one of the nine planets, but scientists have since downgraded Pluto to a dwarf planet. A technicality, but as a science teacher it bothered me a bit. I only hope that this song was written long before the recent developments.

Overall, we enjoyed the What Are the Odds? CD. The song mixture was great to use with toddlers, preschooler and even my elementary aged son. The songs were gender neutral, so they are great for all children.

Lunch at CiCi’s Pizza with Mom

Dear NHL and JSL,

I think the two of you have a new favorite restaurant that you both agree on. Recently, a CiCi’s Pizza opened up near us. We had heard about them from other people, but had never gone. I met the two of you and Daddy there the weekend I was busy working on some writing. NHL, you liked it so much that you asked to head back there a few days later on your actual 7th birthday. We obliged and did not have the best experience.

CiCi's Pizza

Friday, I wanted to do something a little special with the two of you. It was the last Friday of our summer vacation together. I had to get some shopping done for TJ’s birthday party today, so I asked if you wanted to go to an early lunch. I think I shocked both of you when I suggested going to CiCi’s. I have never seen the two of you go so quickly. We arrived there at about 11:15 and did really well.

It was not crowded, but I still wanted to sit close to the action. When we went up to get pizza, the first thing I noticed was none of your favorites were there. I quickly requested a Mac & Cheese pizza. We were able to find some pineapple pizza for NHL and a slice of Alfredo pizza for JSL to hold you both over. Finally, the Mac & Cheese pizza was ready and you were both SO happy.

Pizza Time

It was a nice afternoon out with my boys. I can not wait to do more fun things in the week ahead before school starts back up.

Love,

Mommy

Birthday Party Foods

Just days before NHL’s family birthday party (this past Sunday), I still had no menu for the lunch we were going to be serving people. Sure, I had ideas of what we needed to feed the kids. Still, the exact menu did not fully come together until we went shopping on Friday afternoon. We went to BJ’s and I found cheese tortellini, suddenly the main dish was before me. Here is a view of the foods on the table:

Birthday party foods of choice

We made the tortellini with lots of veggies and sauce on them. In addition to this, we had cut up veggies and dip, Baked Scoops and a bean dip that Katie blogged about (we added fake taco meat), soy meatballs, macarroni and cheese, and some pizza to bake. Please note that because of people that keep kosher (including TechyDad), we do dairy foods and meat substitutes to have cake later on. Everyone seemed to like it.

Then, it was time for cake. Sad to admit, the cake that NHL asked me to bake literally fell apart Sunday morning as I was decorating it. It tasted great, but I quickly recalled why I do not like making layer cakes.

Cake Fail

TechyDad took NHL out to buy another cake to put on the table, along with the egg free one for my niece. These are the goodies that we had for everyone, along with the failed layer cake that everyone also enjoyed.

Birthday Goodies

Anyone else think that the balloons on the cake (especially on the right), look like something out of a biology lesson?!

So this week I ask you:

When you plan a birthday party, what do you like to serve people to eat?

If you are a fan of The Wiggles or know someone that is, be sure to enter my giveaway for their new DVD. For another chance, stop by TechyDad’s blog as well. I am also giving away a $25 gift card to Sock4Life, so please leave a comment or two there for another great prize.

Socks4Life Review and $25 Giveaway

During the summer months, my feet are free and I typically am wearing shoes that show off my polished toe nails. Still, I am always on the look out for cute, comfortable and practical socks. When I was teaching, I used to wear different fun socks each day. My students would look to see what was on my feet each day. Would they see a funky argyle socks, snowmen, pumpkins or my Chanukah collection each December?

When I was given the opportunity through Family Review Network to review some socks from Socks4Life, I immediately said yes. As a sort of sock snob, I figured I was perfect for this. I am very particular about socks and like them to be comfortable, high quality and fit with specific shoes that I have.

What I thought:

I received the following three packages of socks:

  • American Made Women’s Pink Heel and Toe Quarter Socks
  • Excel Women’s Soft Socks
  • Taga Women’s Argyle Dress Socks

My Socks4Life Selections

The pink heel and toe quarter socks really surprised me. They were extremely comfortable thanks to some cushioning in them. I wore a pair with sneakers to the fair on Saturday. We did a lot of walking while there and my feet never hurt. Usually, after a while with my traditional socks, they are rubbing wrong or tired. The cushion in the socks really gave my older sneakers new life.

I wore the argyle socks to a business meeting the other day. They are a thinner material that is perfect thickness for use with a nice shoe. My only concern with the socks was that they were snug on my size 8 to 8 1/2 foot. The socks say that they are for shoe sizes 9-11. I will likely wash these in a delicate cycle with cold water to make sure that they do not shrink since I fear they may not work if they get any smaller. Overall, I really liked the argyles because they were funky, fun and still sophisticated enough to wear for business.

The soft socks are just what the name promises – soft! They were warm, snuggly and super soft. I think these will get a lot of use when the cooler autumn and winter months are here. I think I am also going to put a pair in my bag when I go to my parents house. With their central air, I often want a pair of socks to keep my toes warm. These would do the job quite nicely.
