Tuesday Tales – Pete the Cat Books

The Scholastic Book Fair was visiting school recently and I promised the boys that I would take them shopping. While a teacher caught me to ask me a question, the boys went off on their own. Of course, my boys went right to the most expensive items there. I managed to move them away because one was on a Chanukah list for the big kid. We continued to look around.

JSL’s face suddenly lit up when he recognized a book from his kindergarten classroom. Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes by Eric Litwin was coming home with us. The adorable feline on the cover illustrated by James Dean really intrigued me. Later on, JSL and I went back to the book fair and I bought him the other book from the series. Yes, Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes was also going to join our library at home.

Pete the Cat books

I hate to admit it, but this was my introduction to the Pete the Cat books. I am now a big fan of Eric Litwin and his furry feline character. I love the repetition, rhyming, and learning within these cute stories. Pete the Cat also has songs that you can download to use when reading the books. I can not tell you how many times we listened and rocked out to these this weekend. JSL now “reads” the book and sings the song as he turns the pages. This is so great for early readers. There are a lot of Pete the Cat items available on the Harper Collins website including the songs, videos, and downloadable activities.

Here is a preview video of Pete rocking in his school shoes:

I highly recommend these books as a fun way to encourage early readers. Plus, you can use them to encourage writers workshop ideas with more tales about Pete and his shoes. If you are looking for ideas, there are some great ones on Pinterest. I do believe that JSL and I will be checking some of these out together during winter break.

Are you familiar with Pete the Cat? As always, please share what you have read recently. Be sure to link up to your book posts in the comments below. Include something you read on your own, with a child, or someone else. Tuesday Tales are all about spreading the love for books.

It's Me

Disclosure: We paid for the Pete the Cat books on our own during a fundraiser at our school. Two Amazon Affiliate link are included in this post for the books mentioned. I will receive a percentage of money for the sale should you opt to buy the book through that link.

Thankful for Answers

This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for something that many people may not understand. It involves my son and answers that we have been searching for for at least five years. Of course, these answers took a lot of time, energy, frustration, tears, and wanting to give up. Still, TechyDad and I could not give up. WE are the best advocates for our children and knew that we had to do more to get answers for our family.

It is finally time to share this information in a public way. We have our son’s permission because he wants other children and adults to understand. He wants kids to know why he does things a certain way that is different than most of his peers. He genuinely wants people not to bully kids like him for being “different” than others. It isn’t every day that you meet a young child that adores math and will talk your ear off about all things related to science, math, Legos, Harry Potter, and other items. His love for these items is intense, as is his need for order, schedules, and following rules. When an item upsets him, his emotions are deep. Certainly not something you would expect from a young child. His fears are that of an adult and not what a nine year old should be thinking of.

A Little History

Countless doctors, lots of specialists, and many meetings at school left us feeling lost. We knew that we had to do more for our sweet, smart, and very innocent son. Each year, he seemed to get more lost in the system, sad, and withdrawing from items. Last year, I made the call to our insurance company. I cried for help to find someone someone to help us get real answer. We were given the name of a Neuro-Psychologist to contact. Appointments for specialists take time, but what was a month or two at this point?

This woman did not judge. She was professional and made amazing observations in the classroom, during testing, and again when looking at all of her data. Although reading her report broke my heart, a weight was lifted. Finally, we could begin to really understand why NHL was reacting to things the way he did.

The Final Answer

Autism RibbonIn the end, the doctor came to the conclusion that NHL has Asperger’s Syndrome. In other words, he has high functioning autism. He is part of the 1 in 88 children that are diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum. This was what I suspected years ago, but medical professionals would say yes, no, yes, and no over the years. This time, in my heart of hearts, I knew that she had the right diagnosis. It made sense, it all added up, and it would allow us to move forward with a new plan.

Autism is an answer to my prayers. I can now understand why certain things at home and school never really worked.   My son is autistic, but it will not define who he is or who he becomes in the future. Yes, I am thankful to finally know more about the how and why of NHL’s responses to things.

I am also thankful for amazing professionals that we have found in the last few months since we got the diagnosis. They have given us a breath of fresh air. We know we are not alone in a later diagnosis and they have been great to bounce ideas off of. The special needs community does not judge, they embrace others. When we have a rough day, they help to make us smile with a story of success. They share resources and other items that have worked with their children. I hope to do the same here as well. My goal in writing this is to educate others and remind parents who are still searching for answers NEVER to give up on your child. You know your kids and truly are their best advocate.

The biggest item I am thankful for this year is my son’s happiness. NHL is genuinely happy these days, so much less anxious, and more focused. With social skills work and additional items, we are seeing growth in a lot of areas. We know how to work around things that may trigger an emotional response. We are also working hard to help educate other people in his life as well. It is often hard for us to understand everything, so I get the confusion.

Please remember that when you see a child crying or having what you consider a tantrum in a public place not to judge. Autism is not something that you can see at a glance. It may seem like a defiant or bratty child, but it is most likely a very scared kid who is overwhelmed with the neuro-typical world that they are living in.

It's Me

Looking back: I actually did write some items about this in the past. I had forgotten about them, but in a search found them. All I can say is WOW.

In Need of Relaxation

The last few weeks have been very stressful. Time spent worrying about an extremely important meeting. Even while worrying, TechyDad and I had to prepare for said meeting. Then, after all of the worries, waiting, and preparing, we had to deal with the aftermath of the meeting. The stress has taken a toll on me. My body is stressed and trying to fight off a cold that is quickly making breathing hard. Asthma after the flu a few years ago has not been kind.

I know what I want to be doing right now. Since reading with a head cold can be hard, I would put the books aside and knit. Of course, multi-tasking while knitting is easier. I would love to go curl up on the couch under a blanket to watch a movie and knit.

Brave DVD and Knitting

Of course, this is the real world. Brave will have to wait to be watched later in the week. There is freelance writing to be done, legal documents to read over, and investigations to be made about Couch to 5K apps. Yes, while sick I joined a group to tackle something I have been longing to try for quite some time. I know it’s crazy to attempt it in the winter in New York for the first time, but I will not let that be an excuse. So just add the need for running shoes to my list of items for the week.

If you have any Couch to 5K words of advice, I would love to hear them now. I am doing this to get moving, help ME feel better, hopefully drop some pounds, and prove to myself that I am worth the time.

It's Me

P.S. A special prayer to my friends and family in Israel. Worry for all of you grows each day with news spreading about the new normal in your lives.

An Evening at School with my Little Guy

Dear JSL,

Last night we dropped Daddy and NHL off to a prior commitment that they had. After that we went off to a fun evening at your school. Since you are a kindergarten kid and need to get to know the building, people, and community it seemed like an important item for us to go to.

I am so glad that we went. You were not too sure about things when we started out, but then you quickly perked up. We started off with getting a PTA membership card. They also had the school t-shirts on sale. Thank goodness they had one left in your size. I suggested that we put it on you. The smile that lit up your face was priceless. You were so proud and seemed to have more of a connection to the school racing around with the logo on your chest.

Then we wandered around and you wanted to make sure we brought something home for NHL. So we donated some money for cookies to take home with us. After this we wandered to the crafting area. Your art teacher gave up a seat since she was finishing with her family and you sat down to make something fun.

Harvest Craft Time

When you were finished, we went into the dance area where you found a friend from your class. We followed them to the silent auction area. We bought some tickets and you had fun placing them into bags to try to win something. Then, you went to get a tattoo on your hand with the school logo. After that we took one more trip to the Scholastic Book Fair and bought another Pete the Cat book.

After almost two hours, it was time to head off to get Daddy and NHL. We shared everything with them. This morning you had to put your school shirt on immediately because you love it so much. I have a feeling this may have been our best decision ever. Thank you for sharing a fun evening at your new school with me.

Love,

Mommy

Thoughts of Thanksgiving

It is hard to believe that in less than a week it will be Thanksgiving. The last month or so seems to have gone by really quickly (most days). Thanksgiving is a great time to make you think about what you are thankful for and traditions. JSL came home from kindergarten with his first class project. He had to decorate a turkey feather, write what he is thankful for, and complete a sheet with family traditions. The feather would be part of a giant turkey for outside the classroom.

When we sat down to work on his feather, he immediately stated what he was thankful for. He said NHL (big brother) and his family. I figured this would be what he would wrote on the blank line, but it was not. He told me that was a given that he loved us and he wanted to share something different. So my kindergarten kiddo wrote about his two best buddies that are a comfort to him. Perry the Platypus and his little itty-bitty monkey.

I cherish the innocence in his items and wish that I could keep it like this forever. I know that my list would be a lot more complex for many reasons, but there are days that I miss my stuffed friends and the comfort that they could bring me.

This week my questions to you are:

What are you thankful for and what is your favorite Thanksgiving tradition?

It's Me
