Shofar 101

Thanks to my brain not working I forgot people may not know what a Shofar is (thanks S). Here is the Wikipedia information (with a great photo of one) to give the significance of the item to Rosh Hashana and Yom Kipppur.

Thursday night my grandmother gave NHL this:

It’s a seemingly harmless plastic shofar for kids. Uncle I and Aunt M had given him one in the past. He loves them, but man can it be LOUD and annoying.

Here is a video of NHL using his shofar as JL says the calls that they do when they sound the shofar:

So that is the beautiful shofar. Next Saturday evening after Yom Kippur there is a service where I believe there will be at least 6 shofars out in all area of our synagogue. They sound together and it’s an amazing experience.

Rosh Hashana 2007

L’Shana Tova to all of my Jewish friends.

Thanks to Rosh Hashana I have not blogged. So now that the holiday is over NHL has a message. This message is from my new digital camera that I ordered Wednesday night and came via UPS today. Check it out:

For those of you that would like a translation of hyper over-tired 4 year old he’s saying "Shofar! Shofar!" and later tells me "Rosh Hashana"

Oh and in the background is JL yelling "Oh no!" since Mt. JSL exploded at the changing table. The poor monkey must be teething and has WAY too much saliva for his own good. So the video was cut short to go and help JL.

Broken heart – repair needed

Drop off went better yesterday with me taking NHL. Problem is we didn’t know if it was me taking him, his OT being there, his real teacher being there or something else.

Things did not repeat this morning. My heart was ripped from my chest and is broken. I sit here trying to stop tears as I relive the horrifying screams and cries NHL just did this morning.

When NHL and I arrived we went in the same door since we were never given officiial alternate plans. Once down the hall only  the assistant teacherr was there and he started to panic and ask for his teacher.  The panic quickly escalated  to screams, crying, and all out hysterics. The assistant teacher took his hand and he started to kick and clutch for me, I quickly left and felt like a heartless bitch.

You need to realize I never dropped NHL off before. Daddy did since he worked next to daycare. i never had to witness this EVER and I don’t want to again.

JL just told me that this morning while getting ready NHL told him he didn’t like his teacher. JL asked who and he said the assistant teacher. This morning was also the first day that he didn’t rush out of bed to get ready. He actually said to me "I don’t want to go to school"

I just wish I could get into his little mind and see what was whirling around in there. Hopefully he rebounds from this morning and has a decent day. The not eating lunch, the refusing to use the bathroom and horrible drop offs really worry me. In all honesty I think his reaction would be like this to any new school. He left his comfort zone of 3 years and this is tough.

Off I go to cry and comfort and comfort JSL.

4 Month Well Visit

Yesterday I took JSL for his 4 month well visit. We made the appointment with the new doctor in the practice (now there are two doctors and one PA). I loved her. She was so caring, sweet and really got involved in the questions she asked me. In fact she wanted to see JSL do some of the things and picked him up to try them with him.

Now here are a few of the things that happened.

The nurse brought us back and measured him. He’s 23 1/4 inches tall (I believe from the charts that’s about the 10th percentile). Then it was time to strip him to get a weight. I put him on the scale and he was very upset about being naked. The scale was reading 10.5 pounds.

I don’t think so! –> Hello the kid was born at almost 9 pounds!

She tried to fix the scale again to work and thank goodness I asked for something to put over my little sprinkler. Second later he peed all over the place. Fun!

No matter what she did, the scale wasn’t working. After the doctor did the exam she asked another nurse to see if she could get it to work. This time he weighed in at 15 pounds 13 ounces (that’s about the 75th percentile).

She immediately told me that we were good to go on trying cereal. I looked at her and said no thank you, I want to wait until he shows interest in food. At this point he’s quite content with only breast milk. She was floored and told me it was refreshing to hear someone like this. I told her I was in no rush, and carting baby food around and feeding them that is more complicated than nursing him at this point. She completely agreed and said since he’s gaining weight, sleeping at night, and going long periods during the day without nursing he’s fine. In fact she was floored that he hasn’t woken up for a feeding since he was 2-3 weeks old. I don’t count when he goes to sleep early and wakes up at 4-6 to eat. . . that I understand completely. I count my blessings since this could stop at any time.

So she’s very happy with his development and was impressed with his strength. He’s babbling consonants, rolling from tummy to back (almost able to go back to tummy), pushing to stand when sitting on a lap, and can sit up in a tripod stance for a minute or so before toppling over. We watch carefully on these things since NHL had low muscle tone.

The poor monkey had four immunizations. He was so good for them and smiled a few minutes after until he fell asleep. Today he was a little cranky and was projectile vomiting Tylenol at me, but was better this evening. So now we see how things are before our next visit with the same doctor in 2 months.

Walmart in Hot Water

My friend L just IM’d me the following website about a mother who had a Wawlmart security guard try to take her baby from her. Apparently a code Adam was called and they didn’t follow protocol. Rather than lock down the store they went to this innocent woman and traumatized her and tried to take her child. Here are links to articles about it:

Stacy’s Blog about the incident

The Consumerist details about the events

It really got JL and I thinking. How do you prove an infant is yours? Clearly this child was clinging to the mother in horror, but they don’t have ID for the child. So what do you do? There is project Safe Child all over the country. The problem with these ID cards is that children, especially infants, change so drastically in just a few short weeks, no less months. There’s no doubt in my mind that this will get people thinking and perhaps help to prevent something like this from happening to another parent and child.
