Slice some time for Five for Fighting

Have you ever listened to a song that you just loved from the first time that you heard it? That is what happened to me back in 2000 with the song "Superman" by Five for Fighting. I fell for not only the lyrics, but the amazing voice and sound of lead singer John Ondrasik.  We bought the CD America Town before the song "Superman" became sort of a tribute to the events of Septemeber 11, 2001. To this day, when the song comes on the radio it sends chills down my spine, it really is that special.

Five For Fighting

I was recently asked by the One to One Network to take a sneak peak of Five for Fighting’s latest release "Slice" via digital download. I was excited to review this CD because it was a chance to listen to some of my own music. My digital copy of the CD came just before the release date of October 12, 2009. I immediately downloaded the music and put it on my laptop to listen. I was quickly mesmerized with the voice of John Ondrasik and the familiar sounds from previous Fight for Fighting releases. Here is more about the CD:

Slice CD cover

Slice includes the following tracks:

1. Slice
2. Note To The Unknown Soldier
3. Tuesday
4. Chances
5. This Dance
6. Above The Timberline
7. Transfer
8. Hope
9. Story Of Your Life
10. Love Can’t Change The Weather
11. Augie Nieto

Five for Fighting has been making the rounds of television programs in recent weeks promoting Slice. In addition to this, they made a special appearance on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.  On this episode they once again showed their commitment to the brave firefighters that are heroes of our everyday life. During the segment on the show they performed a special tribute by singing the song "Chances" to the family and crew building the house. Here is the video of the video for that song:

My Review:

One of the reasons I included the video of "Chances" is because it really connected when I heard it. The instrumentals combined with Ondrasik’s voice are beyond powerful in this song. There is a reason this song was selected on Extreme Makeover and no doubt it will be in other movies and television shows in the future thanks to the power behind it.

"Note to an Unknown Soldier" is a fabulous tribute to the soldiers who have given their lives to protect our country. Each and every lyric talks to the families of these heroes. You can begin to put a picture of these people in your mind. The song tells a story and reminds me of a modern day Piano Man by Billy Joel.

As I listened to Slice, it was easy to hear the growth of Five For Fighting over the last nine years. Each song tells it’s own story and is strong on its own. The lyrics are even more powerful on this album, they speak to different people and make connections to the masses. I know that I will be listening to this strong musical compilation for a long time to come.

You can pick up your own copy of Slice at Amazon.com or any other location that sells music. If you are on Facebook and a fan of Five for Fighting be sure to become a fan here. Now I just hope that they will tour closer to us. So far the tour dates listed are not local, but maybe you will be lucky enough to catch one of these shows.

1,001 Dalmatians -er I mean posts

Today is a special blogging day for me. I officially broke my 1,000th post mark. It took me two years and eight months to get here, but I did it!  Here,is a special cupcake just for you from Disney World. . . enjoy.

Celebrating blog post 1001!

Back when I started blogging in February 2007, it was just an outlet to vent some about being pregnant with baby number two,as well as a place to write down memories. Now it is that and so much more. The Angel Forever has become a part of my life. I look forward to writing about my life, our family, places we go, and products we use. Thanks to opportunities over time, I also adore reviewing products and giving readers a chance with some fun giveaways (like this one).

Whether you have been with me through this 1,000+ post journey, or have just joined the adventure, I hope you enjoy your time here and continue to read. You never know what will pop up next, but I promise you there is never a dull moment in my little part of the world.

I love hearing feedback and getting comments, so please do not be shy.

Game time with Rummino – Giveaway

When TechyDad and I were newlyweds, we went out to the store and bought a bunch of board games. We both loved word games, trivia, and things that would challenge our brains. We used to play the games on Shabbat or when we had friends over. It was a great time without television and computers.

Flash forward to life as the parents of two little boys. When we play board games, they tend to be for the kids. The games that we have for us from before are still packed away in an undisclosed location within the house.

When I was recently asked by Family Review Network to try out a game called Rummino by Marina Games, I was excited. This was the perfect opportunity for TechyDad and I to test out the new game together. You know, actually pry ourselves away from the computers/blogging and play a game just the two of us.

Rummino

About Rummino:

Rummino is a whole new way to play Rummy! Combining the game play of Rummy with the strategy of word tile games, Rummino is a one of a kind master strategy game for the whole family. The object is to get the highest score at the end of the game. Each player draws 7 tiles and plays them off the sets and runs already on the table. Earn points for every tile you ‘add-on’ to a run or set. Get a two way run and earn extra points. Finish off a run or set and double or triple your points for that play.

The perfect game for family game night, Rummino is easy to learn and fun for the whole family to play! With its ease of learning combined with the strategy involved, this game keeps everyone entertained from the 8 year old learning to play games to the skilled adults desiring a challenge. Watch your opponents moan and groan as you use one tile to score 36 points!

Rummino slogan

 What we thought:

TechyDad read the directions for Rummino and then we sat down to try it out. After we started our first game, we quickly realized we were not playing right. Of course, that was the "Ah-ha" moment! Suddenly everything clicked and we realized that we were making too much of the directions. We put all of the tiles back and started again. This time, we were a bit more competitive. We knew what we were doing and sat there trying to use major strategy to rack up our points. The game lasted for quite some time, but it was a lot of fun. Both TechyDad and I commented today that if we do indeed get rid of our cable television we will have more time to play Rummino and our other cleverly hidden games from the past.

We both really enjoyed Rummino and can not wait for a chance to play again. As we played, we wished that Rummino had come with something to put the tiles on (like in Scrabble). It would have been a lot easier to hide from each other while still being able to see them to strategize. As I mentioned, we had to regroup after an "ooops" with the directions. TechyDad and I were talking about it and we think they may have been a bit too lengthy, thus complicating them. Of course, once we had our "Ah-ha" moment we were good to go and ready to compete. Both of us also agree that we are going to try to have our six year old son try to play next time. We think that with a little coaching/modeling of play he will catch on quickly and enjoy this. Of course, we will still have our adult mind tournaments where we battle for supremacy!

 A game of Rummino

1. Time to take 7 tiles, 2. Just starting our Rummino game, 3. TechyDad makes a move

Where the Wild Things Are comes alive in IMAX

Imagine being sent to your room because your mother calls you a wild thing. When you get there, you turn your anger into a creative adventure using your imagination. Suddenly, your bedroom is magically changing into another world. You are thrust into a world of wild things where you are crowned king.

This is the premise of Maurice Sendak’s 1964 Caldecott Medal winning book. For over forty years this book has been a classic that generations of parents and grandparents have shared  with children. I still remember hearing this book on tape (perhaps record) in the library of my elementary school. Back in those days (early 80’s), we were thrilled that it came with a (*gasp*) film strip of the illustrations. Each time the little beep sounded, the librarian would move to the next exciting picture of Max on his adventure with the Wild Things.

Where The Wild Things Are

On Friday, October 16th, Where the Wild Things Are: The IMAX Experience opened. Now you can take a special child in your life, or treat the child within to this new version of a 40 year old classic on film. To help and celebrate the release, IMAX is going to be starting a promotion just for their Facebook fans on Monday, October 19th. Each day of that week, two lucky fans who put the Where the Wild Things Are crown on their profile picture and comment on the IMAX Wall will be entered to win an exclusive IMAX Where the Wild Things Are poster, book, and a pair of IMAX movie tickets!  The crown image and full intructions will be released on the IMAX Fan Page on Monday.

Thanks to Momfluence, I have an additional opportunity to offer my readers.

If you are on Twitter, please be aware that  there will also be a Twitter party for this event – hashtag #IMAXWildThings – Monday from 9 to 10 p.m. ET. Even more prizes and tickets will be awarded during this time.

I know that I will be reading the book Where the Wild Things Are to both of my boys. With any luck, we will also take my six year old son to see the IMAX movie as a special treat in the next week. As a parent, teacher and kid at heart I look forward to seeing Sendak’s classic up on the big screen. Good luck to all those that enter the two contests!
