Sending Toddlers to School

It seems like just yesterday I was debating whether or not to send my youngest to a toddler program at our synagogue. Fast forward and my “baby” is now a kindergarten kid in a full day program. Time sure goes quickly when your kids are growing up. If I could do it all over again and money was no option, I wish I had been able to put JSL into the toddler program. We ended up keeping him home because of finances, but when he was three, he went to nursery school three days a week.

Sending a toddler to school

Driving by our old nursery school, it made me sad that we are no longer there. This is the time of year when parents all over will be touring, planning, and making decisions about this topic. It reminded me of a post that I wrote for another project about making this tough decision for your family.

________________________________________________________________

It is that time of year again. Yes, time to decide whether or not to send your toddler off to a nursery school or preschool. Whether or not you do this is your personal decision. If you decide that this is something for your family it is time to get started for next year. Registrations are already starting to go into local YMCA, JCC, and other community run programs throughout the area. Many are also holding information days and open houses.

There are plenty of schools in the Capital District and beyond for children that are 2, 3, and 4 years old. In addition to this, you can find schools that run developmentally appropriate programs that run 2-5 days a week for a few hours each day. The first step after you decide you want your child to go is to locate a school that is right for your family.  A great resource is the Capital District Child Care Council. Here you can request not only daycare providers, but also schools for toddlers in Albany, Fulton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady counties

I never had to look into a program for NHL. My oldest went to daycare when he was one. He stayed there until he went to PreK at four.

Last day of daycare before PreK

When JSL was 18 months old, he had been home with me all of the time. I knew that he needed more socialization with peers his own age. I looked into places that had classes for two year olds. We found one that we loved, but passed due to the price. Instead, I called the Capital District Child Care Council the following year and received a list of nursery schools. We toured several of them and instantly fell in love with one that JSL went to for two magical years. My tips are to go with your gut, get word of mouth referrals, and make sure you can bring your child to visit before you make a decision.

Do you have any tips to share with parents that are looking for a toddler program right now? If you do please share in the comments below.

Disney Loving in February

Each month, the Disney Wordless Wednesday has a calendar shot for the first week. Valentine’s Day is huge at Walt Disney World. Back in 2010, we were there the week before and saw how merchandise came alive for the celebration of love. I thought I would make my calendar shot of TechyDad and me from our recent trip with Minnie in her pink outfit by Storybook Circus. The rest are some memories from our chilly February experience back in February 2010.

Tuesday Tales – I Survived: The Battle of Gettysburg, 1863

Flash back to when I was in 5th grade. That was the year that I read Anne Frank’s Diary in school. This began my appreciation for books about that historical time, but also historical fiction in general. Some of my favorite trade books to teach are from this genre because there are so many ways to extend lessons.

September 11th book for childrenI have been very intrigued with Scholastic’s I Survived Books by Lauren Tarshis. The first time I noticed them was in a store and I saw I Survived the Attacks of September 11th, 2001. Since that day, I bought the book to read with my oldest book next year together.

The I Survived Books are unique and tell the story of a young boy that lives through a horrific event from history. The other five in the  series include:

  • The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912
  • The Shark Attacks of 1916
  • Hurricane Katrina, 2005
  • The Bombing of Pearl Harbor, 1941
  • The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906

The latest book in the series was just released and I was able to preview it thanks to Scholastic.

I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg, 1863  – Written by Lauren Tarshis –   Scholastic Books – February 2013 – ISBN 9780545459365 – Paperback 112 pages – Ages 7+ – $4.99

This book is set during the Civil War. Thomas and his little sister Birdie are living as slaves on a farm in Virginia. Then, one day, Thomas knows that he has to do something drastic. The two escape from where they are and go on the run. They must stay away from slave hunters as they move along the way. Thomas saves the life of someone, who in turn takes the two children along as they move northward toward Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Inside I Survived - The Battle of Gettysburg, 1863

The book literally makes you feel like you are there with Thomas and Birdie. You can sense the danger, the horror of the war, and the seriousness of slaves getting freed. I really like the way it tells the story around a historical events. These books are great for children, especially boys, that want to read where a male character is the main focus. Thomas had great strength, cared for his sister, and never gives up even when things looked bleak. This book would be great additions to any classroom that is studying the Civil War, or for a child that wants to learn more. Scholastic even has more facts about the time period on their website that features this book. I know that I look forward to reading more of the earlier books in this series with my boys and will definitely suggest them to parents who have children that are interested in history.

Have you read any of the I Survived Books? Do your children like to read historical fiction stories? As always, please share what you have read recently. Be sure to link up to your book posts in the comments below. Include something you read on your own, with a child, or someone else. Tuesday Tales are all about spreading the love for books.

Long Lost Disney Friends

For 2013, Disney has launched Limited Time Magic where something new and exciting will take place throughout the year. Recently, I watched friends and family members share photographs from their time at Walt Disney World during Long Lost Friends Week.

Although I was not able to make it there to see Flik, Clarabelle Cow, Remy, Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, and all of the Robin Hood gang, I knew that I had something fitting. Here is a photo from a long lost magical trip to Walt Disney World.

An Old Disney Favorite from 1983

This retro photo from May 1983 is with Tweedle Dum, my little brother, and I am sporting pigtails. We were enjoying the day at the parks. This trip would also be our first chance to see the newly opened Epcot. If you look closely at my brother, he also had a vintage shirt on. Yes, it is for River Country which closed in November 2001.

So many magical memories and a day with a character that is rarely seen.

What is your favorite retro or rarely seen Disney character? I would love to know and hear all about your experience.

Sharing #ProgressOh! Moments (#Giveaway)

Can you look back and think about a moment when you felt and even looked your best. You were genuinely happy. For me, it was months after my oldest son was born. TechyDad and I made a choice to change our eating habits and we worked out together. We both lost a lot of weight and had a lot of energy. Then. as many people can understand, things happened. I went back to work, we started years of searching for answers to questions about our kiddo, our second child was born, and suddenly we are here.

I know that I am the one in control of my destiny and ready to work on this again. My running shoes, apps, FitBit Zip, and other items are set to be tools for my goals. Exercise is a great way to get rid of stress, and I love eating fruits and vegetables. My body really does crave them. While the winter months are not friendly for some of these items, I look for other items. Progresso® soups are a favorite of mine. I like that there are 40 flavors available that have 100 calories of less per serving. These soups make me say Oh! because I feel like I am indulging in a comfort food that makes me happy.
