I need to move it, move it

It is officially time to regroup and think about what is going on with my weight loss program of choice. Of course, I like to think of it as more of a healthy lifestyle change that will benefit the entire family. Right now I am not content with what is going on and I know I am to blame for most of it.

The Facts:

  • I have been using Weight Watchers online for about six weeks now.
  • A set amount of points is given to me each day. I also receive six extra points since I am still nursing JSL.
  • We have been planning out all meals at home for dinners.
  • The past week we were out a lot with family in town, and more coming this week.
  • Not eating at our house tends to make me lazy and I did not track points as well.
  • Thanks to not tracking points I did not see the scale move down – it remained the same.
  • Since starting Weight Watchers online I have lost just under ten pounds.
  • From the start of 2009 I have lost about 16 pounds.
  • The weeks that I am most successful are the ones that I record my points
  • I know that I need to add exercise into my daily life. There is more to it than chasing around a toddler and five year old, and doing laundry/shopping.

Back in 2004, JL and I unofficially did Weight Watchers together. We started at around the same time and by July I had lost 60 pounds. I know I can do this. This time around I am five years older, have had another child and need to realize that lack of real exercise does not work. I am also nursing less and I think the six extra points may be excessive given the amount JSL nurses these days.

We own WiiFit, so I should be using that. The trouble is I am not really a fan of it. There is one thing that really bothers me about it. When you use the program, you see all of the stats from the other people using it (not weight or anything). To motivate myself, I want to simply work against my prior records, not those of my hubby who has been using WiiFit for longer. So rather than sucking it up and just dealing with it, I have chosen not to even use it. Silly I know, but it still bothers me along with the annoying trainers.

Thanks to this, I have been looking at exercise videos. I took one out of the library that is with Bob from The Biggest Loser and Leslie Sansone’s walking workouts really intrigue me. Last night I actually sat and checked a bunch of things on Exercise on Demand while getting JSL to sleep. Eventually I would like to work back up to Tae Bo since JL and I used to really enjoy that. If we clean out the playroom upstairs there will be the perfect amount of space to do that.

If you have any suggestions of videos please let me know.

Grilling Goodness – Take 7

GoldenGoodness

1. What is your favorite thing about Springtime? – Love not dealing with winter coats, hats, boots and all of that bulky wear. Also enjoy not having to scape ice off my car as much as in the winter.

2. Do you prepare special, maybe even fun, meals for your kids? Example, please.  – One item that I make special because both of the boys love it is matzoh ball soup.

3. What are you looking forward to this weekend? – Looking forward to hubby being home and finalizing what we are doing about a new much needed car.

4. Within driving distance, where do you like to go for a little getaway? – In the fall we loved going to the Six Flags park that is near our house. We got a great deal and bought season passes for this coming year. It should be a great thing to have with the boys.

5. Laundry detergent: liquid or powder? – Liquid and unscented.

6. What does your spouse do around the house that you appreciate the most? – I am so lucky to have a husband that enjoys cooking. He makes most of the meals during the week.

7. Do you converse with the grocery checker or pay and bolt? – I make nice chit chat. I remember all too well what it was like working in a grocery store.

8. Have you ever had an MRI? (If you feel comfortable sharing why, please do.) – I had an MRI done on my knee a few years ago. I fell on ice in the parking lot at work. I hurt my leg pretty badly. Thanks to some funny noises, I was sent to have an MRI done to rule out further damage. It was not a fun experience and am glad that my head stayed out of the machine.

Grilling Goodness – Take 6

GoldenGoodness

1. What is your favorite family activity? – Going to the park when the weather is nice. Can not wait to do this in the Spring now that the little guy is really walking and running. Of course this summer we hope to be able to use our season passes for the Six Flags park that is close to us.

2. Do you know how to play poker? – Not really. Although I think my brother would teach me if I really wanted to know how. Heck, he would probably take me to the casino near his house to learn.

3. Have you ever been to a chiropractor? Regularly? – No, I have never been.

4. Have you ever slopped pigs or milked cows? – No, but I did help an old friend in her barn since she had a horse at her house when I was in college.

5. How are you doing with the goals you made for the New Year? – Still doing Weight Watchers online. Stresses and not adding as many veggies into the day, along with needing more exercise are making it very slow. Still I have lost and have not gained.

6. Is there something you dread doing every day? – I  don’t love changing diapers, but we are just thinking about potty training the little guy. Thursday night before bed he asked to got potty. I think he was trying to stall bedtime in reality.

7. What room in your home would you most like to buy new furniture for? – The boys room. We are still debating bunk beds down the road.

8. If I had a dollar for every piece of clothing I wash over the years, I’d be able to get a bigger house and vacation at Disney World more often.

An early spring cleaning

As many of you know, something I always do is reply to each comment left on my blog with an e-mail. I take pride in doing this. If you took the time to leave me a comment, which I adore, I want to acknowledge it.

Over the last week, I have been slacking in this area. NHL has been home from school all week thanks to winter break, but there is more going on. The days and nights have been a blur as we prepare for the arrival of the new refrigerator. To say that we finally took charge of the chaos within the house would be an understatement. This new refrigerator has been a blessing in disguise. Our curb on garbage night will certainly show how nicely we were able to purge "stuff" from our house. At last count, we had well over a dozen bags of garbage and the recycling is overflowing on our front porch.

Here was our attack method:

  • Saturday – JL and I went right for the kitchen. We went through the area that we store kids medicine in and checked dates on everything. Then we cleared off the top/side are of the refrigerator and by the back door. Next up were the counters. I was feeling ambitious and opted to start going through the cabinets to clean things out. I figured Passover is coming, so this will save us time later on. After three hours we, finished up to get dinner ready and put the kids to bed.
  • Sunday – JL took the kids out for a little while. I went into the extra room, known as the "third bedroom." Prior to leaving, JL brought up boxes from the basement of clothing for me to shuffle outgrown NHL clothing into. When I was done the 24M/2T things were up and ready for JSL, and the 3T/4T/5T things were put away from NHL being done with them. A few boxes of spring/summer clothing remain along with a Rubber Maid box with towels. Still a work in progress, but it is organized and you can move within the room. In addition to this, I also managed to do two loads of laundry.
  • Monday – Next up was the dining room. After dinner, I started to work on the floors and piles within. JL and the boys started to work on the toys in the living room.I moved my knitting items into the third bedroom and made room for a container with games for the boys. A little drama happened this night during our cleaning session. JSL tripped over a pile of toys that were being moved. He fell right into something else and ended up with a nice goose egg on his forehead. Fast-forward to bed time. JSL was in our bed settling with JL. Suddenly I hear JL scream for me. I arrive on the scene to JSL doing his impression of a volcano. I will spare you the details and just say two loads of laundry from 9-12 that night included our blanket, sheets, matress pad and my pillow is gone.
Mom, stop taking photos and cleanAll packed up and ready to go
  • Tuesday – JL and I finished up the living room. Basically moving books, papers and coats to see what was in the room. We do not have a coat closet, so in the winter our little couch serves as catch all for coats, scarves, gloves and hats. We also purged lots of kindergarten work that we just do not have room to save. The toy area was also completed during this time.
    Home of knitting items
  • Wednesday – Before JL got home from work, I started my attack on the dining room table. Almost everything is currently off it. A few things of vitamins, my laptop, and a container of wipes remain. Items were added to the shred bag and then we had dinner and put the kids to bed. Once they were asleep, we finished up with the kitchen. The counters were tackled one more time and we cleaned off the refrigerator itself.  Now the only thing left to do is clear out the food when they come to deliver today.

As you can see, that has kept me very busy here. I will catch up with my e-mail replies, I promise. Are we finished with the cleaning? No way! Next up on the list of purging/cleaning is the upstairs room. We have not used it in several years. It is an amazing space with an additional half bathroom. It will be fabulous for the boys to have as a playroom. A perk will be that we can move a lot of the toys from down here up there. We hope to be able to start working on that next week when the boys are sleeping. Slowly, we will finish up this project and then move on to our bedroom.

The refrigerator is scheduled to be delivered today between 1-3 and JL is here to man the fort with me. If I ever doubted that we needed a new one, below is what I found yesterday in the back of the old refrigerator. This is the container that was collecting the water that is leaking inside. It is a solid brick of ice.

Grilling Goodness – Take 5

GoldenGoodness

1. How long has your longest friendship been? – I have known several of my friends since I was born thanks to being neighbors or our families being friends before we were born. The longest friendship from school is my friend M that I met in kindergarten. We are still in touch and see each more that she moved back here.

2. What made you happy this week? – Sunday I was thrilled to be pretty much done making dining reservations for Disney World. We basically got into all of the places we wanted. I am also happy that we seem to be making ground on on getting NHL’s allergies under control.

3. Are you planning any kind of event right now? – I suppose you could call traveling with kids on an airplane for the first time an event. All of the plans, packing and such for Disney World will likely be an event. Plus we will be celebrating a 2nd birthday among other things. Oh, I suppose I need to find a time to do his 2nd birthday party here for family before or after the trip as well.

4. Do you wear your wedding ring? What is it made of? – I usually wear my ring all of the time (except to sleep). My engagement ring is platinum and my band is white gold.

5. Do you shave your legs in the winter? – Yes, but not nearly as often as in the summer. Without shorts the need is not quite there.

6. What time do your kids go to bed?  NHL (5) goes to bed between 7:30 and 8:00 most nights. JSL (21 month old today) usually goes to sleep between 7:30 – 8:30.

7. Right this minute, is your laundry caught up? – No, I usually do some on the weekend so there is a little there now.

8. Do you want flowers for Valentine’s Day? – Hubby knows that I do not like to receive flowers. Like my mother, I do not like to watch them die. It makes me sad to see them, plus I think about all of the money wasted on them for such a short amount of time.
