KidsFunPlaza – January 16, 2011

This week I was busy with a sick three year old, shoveling snow, and dealing with a heater that didn’t want to work. I was also writing posts for the KidsFunPlaza Blog. Recent events in Arizona, really got me thinking about how my life has changed when watching the news. Notes home from JSL’s nursery school about registration for next year got me thinking about toddlers and school.

Helping With Sick Little Brother

Dear NHL,

It was a tough week here at home. JSL was sick most of the time and attention has been on watching his fever and easing his cough. Wednesday, during your snow day, you were such a help.

When I went outside to shovel around the house, you watched your little brother for me. Then, when I told you that his temperature was going higher, you helped get me his water. You wanted me to play a game with you, but I did not want to leave JSL’s side since he was so sick. I allowed you to play on the computer and you were so good.

Keeping busy

You sat there quietly using the computer and checked in with me from time to time. When I needed something else, you got it for me. Thank you so much for being so helpful, not being jealous – you are a great big brother and amazing son.

Love,

Mommy

Lots and Lots of Snow

The winter started off kind of slow here in the snow department. Over the last three weeks, Mother Nature is laughing down at a lot of us. Tuesday night into Wednesday, we got at least 13” of fresh snow.

While the snow looks very pretty, it can be tough to deal with. It melts and creates ice, which is beyond dangerous to drive on. Roofs may form ice damns that leak back into homes. If there is too much snow, you can have trouble locating a place to shovel more of it.

Some Snowy Fun

On the flip side, playing in the snow is lots of fun. Listening to your children laugh while they make snow angels, go on sleigh rides, and chase each other is priceless.

So my question to you this week is:

What is your favorite and least favorite part about snow? If you are not in a snowy area, I hate you… –er I mean what is the first thing you would like to do in snow?

Heat is a Wonderful Thing

This morning, when I woke up and got out of bed I was freezing. Nothing too alarming really, we keep the house at 63 degrees, and we just got 13 inches of snow yesterday. Here you can see what it looked like before it stopped:

It’s not rocket science, we know it’s cold. When I got NHL up, he went to the couch and complained he was freezing. This is where a red alert should have happened. NHL is never cold unless he is sick, and (*KNOCK ON WOOD*) he is not sick yet. I went over to the thermostat and clicked it up two degrees and walked away.

More SnowDid you notice I forgot to do something?

About an hour later I was shivering with JSL in my room. He just woke up and I had to take his temperature. I went to check the heat since the radiators were ice cold.

55 degrees! Uh, Houston we have a problem! I called TechyDad in a panic. I went downstairs and did not see the pilot light on. He talked to his boss, got permission to come home and help me.

After several attempts to keep the pilot lit, it failed horribly. TechyDad went to Home Depot to pick up a thermal coupler. He had replaced this a little over a year ago, so we tried that. It seemed to work at first, but just before heading back to work he went down to check. Nada was lit again. No heat coming out. *sigh*

TechyDad checking things outAt this point, my father came to my rescue and called a Heating/Plumbing place to call me back. They heard we were at 55 degrees with a sick kid and came in less than two hours. To make a long story short – we have heat! The gentleman here  also realized the idiots that put in our system (contractor hired them – not us) when we moved in had something that was making us waste money. He fixed that and we handed over a check with heat flowing out of our radiators.

Immediately afterward, I called S. C. BASS Plumbing to thank them for coming so quickly. Then I made an appointment to have our heating system cleaned.

So excuse me now – I am off to enjoy something I took for granted while taking care of my sick little guy.
