This Number Should Be Illegal For Temperatures

Negative thirteen I would not and could not make this up. That was a picture that TechyDad took when he was taking NHL to school this morning. According to the weather people, not only is it –13 outside, but it is quite windy. Once we factor in the wind chill it actually feels like it is –24.

So how do you send your child to school in this type of weather? The answer is layers. Lots and lots of layers!

Time for School

NHL is wearing sweats, topped with a zip up hoody, boots, hat, two pairs of gloves, his coat, two hoods, and a scarf to protect his face. My guess is he will still feel the sting and not be warm enough. Luckily he does not have to walk far to the car and into school.

Now I am off to curl up under a blanket. For the second night in a row JSL had nightmares and was in our bed. I did not sleep since he kept kicking me.

Stay warm everyone!

Goodbye Tooth #5

Dear NHL,

Over the last three weeks, you have lost three new teeth. The latest came out while you were waking up this morning. I have to admit, I am VERY glad to see this tooth gone. For quite some time, this pesky tooth has been twisted in the front of your mouth. We knew that it was probably ready to come out, but it did not want to give.

On the snow day last week, JSL bumped into your face. You were hurt and came running to me. I immediately saw blood coming from your mouth. I feared the worst since we were getting 13” of snow outside. Luckily, it was just your brother knocking your tooth into a new direction.

That little tooth held on for another week. Friday while in school you must have eaten something that bothered it and once again it started to bleed. When you told me about this, I will admit I was starting to plot how to help you get that top front tooth out.

Thankfully your tooth must have had enough. Now we have to get ready for another visit from the Tooth Fairy tonight. Here’s a look at your rather toothless smile:

Keep up the great work getting the teeth out on your own. I have a feeling we may have the other top one coming out sooner rather than later. Man, you sure are giving the Tooth Fairy a workout.

Love,

Mommy

Happy Birthday Trees – Tu B’Shvat 2011

When you look outside, it is hard to believe that warm weather will ever come back to the area.

Tu B'Shvat 2011

Last night, they mentioned that it has now been 14 straight days since we have had temperatures over 32 degrees. I guess that would explain why the mounds of snow are not changing and it keeps adding up.

Did you know that today is a holiday?

Today is Tu B’Shvat. What is Tu B’Shvat you ask? It is the New Year of the Trees, when new fruits are beginning to form. Kind of hard to believe if you live in certain parts of the world stuck in winter, but it is true. In Israel, spring has already started. On this day in Israel people will plant trees outside. In the United States, we often create fun projects for children to plant some seeds. Around here we often grow parsley inside to use for our Passover seders in a few months.

In addition to planting trees, we also taste new fruits during Tu B’Shvat. Items like almonds, figs, carob, and dates that are native to Israel are common. On Tu B’Shvat we also spend time thinking about ways to help our planet like with recycling and saving energy.

Tu B'Shvat 2008

I know that JSL will be celebrating the holiday at nursery school tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what they do.

What are your plans for Tu B’Shvat? Even if you do not celebrate, I would love to know.

Helping With Sick Little Brother

Dear NHL,

It was a tough week here at home. JSL was sick most of the time and attention has been on watching his fever and easing his cough. Wednesday, during your snow day, you were such a help.

When I went outside to shovel around the house, you watched your little brother for me. Then, when I told you that his temperature was going higher, you helped get me his water. You wanted me to play a game with you, but I did not want to leave JSL’s side since he was so sick. I allowed you to play on the computer and you were so good.

Keeping busy

You sat there quietly using the computer and checked in with me from time to time. When I needed something else, you got it for me. Thank you so much for being so helpful, not being jealous – you are a great big brother and amazing son.

Love,

Mommy
