A Pirate’s Life on Ice

Heading to Disney on Ice, I knew that there would be a section of the show that would really get the attention of my little guy. You see, JSL loves pirates. We had his pirate birthday party earlier in the year. He has a pirate costume, and he is in love with Jake and the Never Land Pirates from Disney Junior. So when I heard that there was going to be a segment about Peter Pan, I knew that Captain Hook and his other pirate friends would be there.

Peter Pan was the last main segment before the finale of the Disney on Ice production of Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey. We got to see Peter Pan, Wendy, Michael, and John fly around and it was magical.

 Time to fly

This was fantastic and I could see that the boys loved it, but their faces lit up when Captain Hook and Smee came onto the ice. Of course, that was nothing like the looks when a giant pirate ship, version of the Jolly Roger, came on with a slew of pirate friends.

The pirates are coming

I even captured part of this on video for the kids to enjoy later on.

Even two weeks after the show, the magical moments are still strong for our entire family. These are the items I cherish.

Menorah Making

Dear JSL,

Friday morning, you had a surprise at school. Your teachers helped you to bring something very special out to me. I was in love the moment I saw it.

Menorah 2011

Yes, your class had made these beautiful menorahs. My favorite part is your class photo from this year right on it. I also love how you designed the menorah with the sparkle stickers and real dreidel attached to it.

On the way home from school, you had a little concert in the car. Without any prompting, you belted out the following words over and over again.

Dreidel Song

Thank you for sharing all that you have learned this year in school. You have grown so much and are getting to be such a big kid.

Love,

Mommy

Favorite Chanukah and Holiday Songs

The other day, I shared some new to us Chanukah music from The Mama Doni Band. It’s funny, festive, and great for the entire family. As much as I adore music for my family, I still love songs that speak to me as an adult. Three years ago, I actually wrote about my favorite Chanukah song. The song still holds up in my top billing. It is called Hanukkah Blessings by Barenaked Ladies. The other day, I actually found a video of the song and wanted to share.

As I said in the past, it gives me chills because of the power of the lyrics, the message, and the entire package.

Of course, a new music video out from the Maccabeats for Chanukah is fantastic. The imagery is simply stunning. They really do a magical job creating the feel of celebrating the Festival of Lights. Watch below and look for a special guest spot from Mayim Bialik. You may recall her playing Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory. She was also also Blossom when I was growing up and playing young Bette Midler in the movie Beaches. Check out this new Maccabeats song here:

So my question to you this week:

What is your favorite Chanukah or other holiday song and/or video?

Chanukah Toy Happenings

As a child, there were not too many toys that were specifically for Chanukah. This certainly did not help when battling the why about not celebrating Christmas like most of my friends. We really only had dreidels to play with and menorahs to light. The world sure has changed and my kids have been lucky to benefit from this. Not only are there great decorations, products, music, there are toys specifically to help kids learn about the Festival of Lights.

I thought it would be fun to share some of the new items that we have seen in recent years. One that I wish we owned is the Little People Chanukah play set. I adore this set and JSL seems to like it when he sees it at nursery school.

Little People Chanukah

Another set is a favorite of ours and we do own it. A family friend gave the boys the KidKraft Wooden Chanukah Set. The set includes a menorah, candles, flames, dreidels, a fry pan, latkes, and Chanukah gelt. Talk about a safe and fun way to let your child light their own menorah.

Kid safe menorah

I have to admit that I am not sure if the Chanukah lacing cards were made by JSL’s school, or bought. Either way, I love that they had a fun center to work on fine motor skills with the kids.

As someone that loves to incorporate arts and crafts into holidays, I was thrilled to see something new and different. Dreidel Shaped Chanukah Crayonswhich were perfect for making Chanukah drawings and more.

Chanukah Crayons

These are certainly not the only Chanukah themed items out there, just a few examples that I have seen in recent weeks. Have you seen something new and exciting? If you have I would love to know about it in the comments below.
