Graduations From My Past

I have a little secret. I never went to my two college graduations. As a transfer student planning a wedding, I had other items to occupy my time when I was finishing my undergraduate degree. When it was time for my graduate school ceremony, I was frugal and wanted to save the money for a fun vacation with my new husband.

Parents always think ahead about graduation moments for their children. I am no different. I dream about watching my boys in a cap and gown at the end of high school, but also college and beyond. My boys are young, so we have time to prepare for these bigger days. Still, kindergarten was a milestone for NHL. Just a few years ago, TechyDad and I sat in the school cafeteria to watch our oldest son finish his first year at elementary school. Some people may have cried as they walked their child into kindergarten the first time, I was more emotional at graduation.

Memories of Kindergarten Graduation 2009

I spent all that year calling NHL my Kindergarten Kid – and suddenly it was over. He was moving onto first grade and the more real side of elementary learning. He could read, write, and was learning about so many things. I even wrote about the poem that made me cry. To me, it symbolized the last day he was a little kid, he was moving up in the world.

May means that people are starting to think about graduations. College students are finishing up their tenure, high schools are starting to practice their ceremonies, and younger children will be moving from one school milestone to another. Although I do not need any graduation cards this year, many other may need some.

Now it is time to go. I need to cherish these moments with my children. Before I know it – they will be off to college and beyond!

A Poem Is – Catch Me There

It is so hard to believe that it is now May. This is the month that my baby turns four. I am in denial, so I am going to flash back to April for a bit. April was National Poetry Month. Although I did not feature it much on my blog, I was writing about it quite a bit on The Disney Driven Life.

Over at DDL I used Disney to inspire poetry writing. Using Disney to write acrostic poetry, cinquain, and other forms of poems just seemed natural. To finish off the month, I wrote about being a reluctant poet as a child and how I had to overcome this as a teacher. I even wrote a 5W’s poem about the following picture:

Mickey On Parade

Be sure to head on over to check out my latest Disney inspired poem. My other Education posts there can be found under NDM183 – that’s me!

I wrote about NHL, my seven year old, writing poems with me. What I never expected was my little guy to join in the fun. Yes, suddenly my almost four year old is rhyming and trying to be a poet. I would love to take the credit, but can not do this. I must bow to the amazing minds at none other than Disney – specifically Disney Junior. You see they have a relatively new segment called A Poem Is. During this segment they show children talking about poetry and then feature a Disney poem.

The boys know that I love Eeyore and shared this one with me the other day. I love how interactive the segments are. Thank you Disney Junior for helping to educate young and old alike.

Please stop by A Disney Driven Life to say hello to everyone else that writes there as well.

Video Games, X-Rays, and Dentists

Dear NHL,

Every six months, you look forward to going to the dentist. The office that we go to is an amazing place for children. When you walk in, you would never know it was a dentists office. The only item that gives it away are only books about teeth on the shelf. After that, it is a playroom and video game wonderland.

This past week, I picked you up after school and we went to the dentist a bit early so you would have a little more time to play video games. You and JSL loved it.

Fun at the dentist's

When it was time to head back to the room for your teeth to be cleaned, the woman noticed that you now have your permanent top front teeth. This meant that it was time to do some more extensive x-rays. You are not a big fan of x-rays and these new things definitely scared you. We talked you through the entire time. When we moved to the room with the panoramic x-ray machine, the contraption really worried you. Still, you listened to us and made it.

When the dentist walked into the room after your teeth were sparkling, she talked with me. She said everything looked good on the x-rays and paused. Then she said she noticed something. It seems that the silly Tooth Fairy made a mistake and took one of your permanent teeth. It is missing and happens to people from time to time. The Tooth Fairy must have thought it was so special and took it on one of her visits. I wonder if she knows we caught her and will get you something special soon. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Hang in there sweetie, there is nothing to worry about. Your dentist told us a great place to go and we will take care of that missing tooth.

Love,

Mommy

A Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah Kind of Day

Imagine sitting on a beautiful beach front eating dinner with your family and good friends. Let’s say it may be at the Grand Floridian Resort at Walt Disney World during the Good Times Get Together during the start of a magical conference weekend. Suddenly, these gentlemen appear at your table:

IMGP3149

They want to know what song you would like them to play at your table! Yes, this really happened back in March at the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. Lucky for us, Resourceful Mommy’s daughter selected an amazing song and I captured it on video. Sit back and enjoy:

So my question for you this week:

If you had been asked what Disney song for the band to play, what would it have been and why?

TheAngelForever

Disclosure: Although we paid for our own trip to Disney World, we were given an incredible deal thanks to Disney. The sweet conference fee included 3 nights at the Grand Floridian, several meals for the entire family,  7 day park hoppers for everyone, conference/meals for me and some other items to take home. Also note that Disney never asked us to blog about this event. As a long time Disney fan, it is my pleasure to share my experiences from the event.

Storms and Weddings

As I sit here watching the news, my head is shaking. My heart is breaking as I watch the death and destruction. These storms are now coming this way and our sky is getting very dark outside. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have been in the line of the storm – and continue to deal with this wild weather plus the aftermath.

P1010757

The deadly storms in the south are taking a lot of attention away from a certain wedding happening soon across The Pond. Sorry, I can not get too into this royal wedding. I didn’t even think my kids knew about it, but they did. My 7 year old mentioned over the weekend that he wanted to know more about the royal wedding. I did a double take. What? You know about it? Yes, he did and then the almost 4 year old joined into the conversation. They knew thanks to Disney Junior’s week long Princess week.

Sorry, but I can not wrap my brain around the wedding and not sure I will be able to. There are just too many other things going on in the world and my life diverting my attention.  I may watch later coverage, but not going to purposefully get up early to watch William and Kate tie the knot. I hope to be sleeping after days of no sleep. Nightmares seem to be getting the little guy. When he comes to crash in our bed – I stay up.

 P1010759

The sky appears to be getting a bit less gloomy right now. I hope the sun will come out and brighten the day for all of us. Lots to get done today, but hard to concentrate with all of the distractions.

Will you be getting up early to watch the wedding tomorrow? Would love to know why either way.
