Twilight – Book Review

Thanks to several people talking up the book Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, I decided to get a copy to read. So Jessica at Kerflop and Kim, I blame both of you (and others) for making me obsessed with finishing the book this weekend. Hey, I wanted to get a jump start on New Moon (book two in the series) while I had some time. Honestly this series has become quite popular with adults and young adults alike. Much like the Harry Potter books, only different – LOL!

Who knew I would be interested in a vampire book? I surely did not. Still I was intrigued with all of the talk of Edward, Bella and Jacob. I must say I was beyond pleasantly surprised. I LOVED the characters. Meyer did a wonderful job leading the reader through the book and setting up the story. I was curious from the start on how Bella would find out about Edward’s secret. My favorite parts were when Bella went to meet the Cullen family and heard how most of the members became vampires. I was beyond hooked at that point.

I do not usually like things that are too suspenseful, but once again this book changed my feelings. I thoroughly enjoyed the end of the book when Bella was chased from the Forks. I wondered how Edward was going to save the day (hello – not spoiling anything here . . . just knew there were many books in the series). Now can not wait to see how it continues since the book left us on the edge of our seat. Thank goodness I have the next one here ready to begin soon.

Another interesting thing to note is there will be a Twilight movie coming out. Meyer has lots of updated information about this on her website. In addition to this she has announced that she is also writing a series of books that show Edwards point of view as opposed to Bella’s from Twilight. A really neat approach that will keep readers happy for years to come!

So, if you need a great book to read and want to get sucked into an enchanting series . . . check these out!

6 Month Well Baby Visit

JSL was 6 months old on Wednesday. It is hard to believe that just six short months ago I gave birth to this active little munchkin. He has changed so much in such a short amount of time. So many days he amazes me with new skills and milestones. These fun accomplishments include blowing raspberries, saying "Mama" and "Nana",  rolling/scooting all over to get an item he wants, pulling up to a stand, sitting up for long periods of time on his own (while playing with a toy now too), cutting new teeth, learning to eat, or laughing at his hilarious big brother.

Wednesday morning we went to the doctor for his well baby visit. The weigh in may have been off a little. Just before he was diagnosed with the ear infection at the urgent care place he weighed 19 pounds, Wednesday he was 18.1 pounds (75% again). It may be right since he has not been nursing/eating as well since he was sick. The great news was he had a HUGE growth spurt in height. JSL is now a whopping 26 inches from 23 inches two months ago. Back then he was barely on the charts, but is in the 50th percentile. Everything looked great and no signs of the cold in his chest. He showed many of his tricks to the doctor and much to my relief his muscle tone looks great. We have a lot of concern there since NHL had low muscle tone that was undiagnosed for a while.

I talked with her about a few things. We wanted to know if we should be giving him vitamins. She said no he did not need them since he was being breastfed. Once he’s one and chewing he can do chewable vitamins. She agreed that he needed a prescription for the fluoride drops since he has teeth and our water isn’t treated. Then we chatted about how interested in food JSL is, but how he does not really want to taste/swallow/try things that are true baby foods. She told me not to get too concerned yet since breastmilk is perfectly fine for him. She agreed that I should stop forcing the issue on cereal and move onto yellow veggies. (We did this last night and I will post the video later – did no go too well). She also thought he may really like Cheerios or the Gerber Puffs where he can have them on his tray to try and eat alone. We did that and he likes them, but has issues swallowing.I may call back next week if this continues. I am starting to wonder if some of the swallowing troubles and refusing to eat (clamping mouth SHUT) could be from his slight tongue tie.

After the exam they said he was healthy enough for his immunizations. He needed 5 different things along with the first half of his flu shot. Thank goodness there was one that had three together, so he only needed to be a pin cushion 4 times. We go back for the other half of the flu shot in December and for his 9 month check in February, but NO more shots until he’s 1 after the flu shot!!!!!!

Here is a photo comparison of both of the boys.

Now we just need to watch his poor little thighs that are SO swollen from the DTaP vaccination and also the flu shot. Poor little guy did not want to stand up much yesterday. On that note I hear someone chatting in his crib after an early morning (4 am) wake up call by big brother NHL. *sigh*

My Silver, Blue & White Swaparooni is here!

Well, it was actually here over the weekend and my neighbor brought it to us Monday night. All of the boys had a blast helping me to dig into the giant box of goodies that came from Airing Dirty Laundry. It was perfect timing since I felt so lousy and it made me smile opening everything and watching the boys laugh and giggle with each and every item they found inside.

Here are some photos of the boys getting to work.

There were lots of fun notes inside that had JL and I laughing!

These are some of NHL and JSL opening things for me and their own gift too. Yes, my Swaparooni pal was sweet and sent each of the boys (including the 30-something one) an item.

Rather than bore you with a shot by shot diary of each item being opened here they all are together:

  • CD for active babies for JSL
  • Eeyore stickers for MOI!  (May have to fight a 4 year old about these)
  • Winnie the Pooh book about Buoyancy for NHL (we are scientists here so we love this)
  • Circle Word Book
  • Set of lavender lotions
  • Star silicone molds – we are all itching to test these out soon!
  • Hot chocolate with mini marshmallows
  • A really cute new fabric headband  — I LOVE this!
  • Gummy sharks – NHL and I had some of these today . . . YUM!
  • Local dark chocolate bar for JL
  • Gorgeous note card box
  • Bag of peach tea
  • Rolos that according to my swap buddy have NO point value – LOL!

S did an amazing job selecting goodies for everyone here. Thank you SO much for everything. I sent out her swaparooni package today and it should be there Saturday. Once she has it I will post photos of the items I sent her. Once again another fun swap where I have met a great online friend.

Meeting Cousin SG – weekend update

It only took us 7 weeks to get out west, but we finally made it to meet Cousin SG and visit Uncle I and Aunt M. We were leery of the LONG roadtrip, but much to our surprise the boys did really well not only going, but coming home as well. We did the trip in under 5 hours both times. Not too shabby and almost makes me have less fear of road trips for the future.

Thursday morning JSL and I were busy, busy, busy. We left the house early and went to get new tires put on my car. While they did that we went on a cold walk to Toys R Us and the book store. We bought a new bib for JSL to eat solids that can just be wiped off and a few other things. By the time we got back to the tire store they were done and we were on our way to BJ’s. Here I  bought baby essentials – diapers and wipes. Then we went home where I panicked about not being packed and needing to pick NHL up. JL called and said he was heading home. He went to get NHL at school and then picked up a quick lunch. By the time they were home I was packed and ready to go, after eating.

We were packed up and on the main road at 2:40 and got to our destination at about 7:30. NHL was so happy to see Uncle I and Aunt M. Cousin SG was sleeping in her swing when we arrived. NHL forgot how tiny babies can be since JSL has grown so much in 6 months. SG is 4 months younger so she has lots of time to catch up.

My parents and grandmother arrived about an hour after we did. At this point it was WAY after NHL’s bedtime. We all stayed up to hold SG and talk for a while. Then we finally settled on sleeping arrangements and made beds. NHL slept on a mattress on the floor with my parents. My grandmother had her own room with a bed. JL and I were on our queen sized Aerobed in SG’s room, where JSL slept in her crip. That left Uncle I, Aunt M, and SG (along with Cousin Zoe cat) sleeping in their room. NHL was SO overtired he was still up long after midnight. He finally crawled into bed with my parents and was so giggly.

Here are photos soon after everyone arrived with SG:Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The next morning we got up, took turns in the shower and eventually went out to lunch. We had thought about going to Chuck E Cheese, but NHL was not cool with that. Instead we went to Dave & Buster’s. We do not have one of these by us and it was amazing. Many of us had a yummy salad. After eating NHL went with Uncle I, Papa, and JL to play some games. Then they traded in tickets for a prize. (I so wish I had taken my camera out, but I did not think about it at the time.) Then it was time to head back to the house to rest before the big night at temple for SG’s naming.

Here are the babies after the adventure:

SG was also kind and let her "big" cousin JSL share her favorite swing. JSL really enjoyed it. Here is a photo of him in it and some with Mimi.

NHL refused to nap and it was NOT a pretty scene. We all helped to get ready for the Shabbat dinner before temple. Aunt M’s family came over and by 6:45 we were out the door to temple. The service started at 7:30 and they did the naming quickly. The reason to do the naming at the start was that Friday night also was Kristallnacht so there was a lot for the rabbi to talk about.

We did not take any photos of anyone at the baby naming (just do not feel right doing that in a temple). Here are some photos of NHL from various times:

Saturday we slept a little later. Nobody really got moving. We finally decided to head out to lunch and came up with a GREAT place that I wish we had near here. We went to Great Northern Pizza. NHL had macaroni and cheese pizza! After a delicious meal we opted to head back to nap some before going to Chuck E Cheese with Aunt M’s cousins. NHL said he wasn’t tired. When we pulled into their driveway BOTH kids were asleep. We transfered NHL into his bed and he had a nice nap.

Aunt M went to her family to check out the little ones because they were not feeling so great. We all opted not to do Chuck E Cheese. We decided to head to the mall that had a special something for NHL. We shopped and let NHL go on this once to keep him VERY happy:

We went back to the house for a fun dinner. By the time we got home I was suffering from a really bad earache. I thought it was my allergies (very allergic to cousin Zoe cat) or wind in my ear. By the next morning I felt even worse. *sigh*   I felt so bad exposing everyone, but who knew? Of course I should have since someone always gets sick when we go there to visit    *wink*

And of course Saturday night was also the night that we learned how many people can fit into a bathroom. SG had her bath and the troops all watched as previously blogged.

Sunday morning came way too quickly and it was time to do kid photo shoots and pack up. Here is the photo shoot of just the cousins. As you will notice SG slept through the entire thing.

Then while I was pumping milk for the road my grandmother wanted a photo with all of her great-grandchildren. I did not witness this – DARN (note the sarcasm). These are JL’s photos:

We were on the road at 10:40 and back home before dinner. Now I am catching up on all of the laundry from the weekend after being sick.

Birthstory carnival by MamaLady

This past Friday, MamaLady hosted a Carnival of Birth Stories. Since I was away over the weekend I finally linked up to my stories today.

I remember with both pregnancies being glued to my mommy groups to see when the next baby was born and to read their birthing experience. Each one is so different and beautiful to hear.

Here are my birth posts:

JSL’s birth story  – posted May 18, 2007

NHL’s birth story – posted on his 4th birthday August 17, 2007

So those are the stories of how my little guys came into the world.
