Baby’s first goose egg

Did you know that crawling can be hazardous to your health?

Man, I forgot how a baby with no fear in the world can quickly get into trouble with practically nothing in front of them, just trying to crawl.

This morning JSL was on the floor playing. He decided he was done sitting and wanted to move to get a toy. He moved his feet out and was attempting to get into crawl position. Thanks to his PJ’s he was having a hard time moving his one leg around. Next thing we knew – BOOM!

That was the sound of JSL’s eyebrow and forehead making contact with his cow truck. In moving his leg out he lost his balance and his arm went out and his head went down. He screamed bloody murder and within 10 minutes this is what the bruise looked like (not the best shot):

Crawling gone bad

JL kept icing it to help the swelling to go down, but it looked horrible. We called Aunt M to ask her about things because NHL never had a goose egg like this (sorry we woke you up M). This kiddo is going to be a trouble maker. The poor kid is a mess thanks to this and tooth #7 coming in fast and furious.

*sigh*   Boys!

Knitting Lessons after 10 pm = bad news

After running a million errands with the boys this evening (BJ’s Joanns, Target), Madame Squishy Yarn Guru came over. She arrived here at about 9:00 when NHL was already asleep. JSL quickly got cranky, so JL went to get him to sleep in our room (they are now both hogging the entire bed).

Anyway, we were chatting about the fabrics that I had bought for several projects that she has graciously agreed to do on her wonderful sewing machine (Thanks L you are the BESTEST. . . can you tell I am punchy and tired?).  After quite a while it dawned on me – hello dork the Guru is here and you did not ask her to show you the good way to cast on. So I flew to my yarn stash got the Homer Simpson yellow and a set of knitting needles.

Let the comedy of errors begin!

Note to those that knit, teach others to knit, or want to learn to knit –> Do NOT try to learn to do things when lacking in the sleep department, especially after 10 at night.

We seriously could not figure out how to do things.   Wait my hand goes where?   Are you sure that is right?   Where should the yarn go?   Wait is it over and under . . . or over and under?

We were in hysterics laughing several times. At one point the needle slipped in my hand and I almost took my own eye out. Coordination with knitting needles apparently is not there after a certain time of day with me. Thanks to this incident we were both laughing at having to wake sleeping hubby up to tell him we were off to the ER from a knitting needle mishap. Could you just imagine the look of the faces of the people at triage in the ER for that one? "No seriously, I was just knitting and well . . . ooops!"

Doing the Figure 8 cast on is really not that hard. I just could not get my head to figure out where Laura’s hands were compared to mine, and I was confusing her in return (it’s catchy I tell you). It really was pathetic how we just could not figure out what we were both doing wrong (much more on my end). Then finally the Guru did something and the lights were on and finally somebody in my brain was home.

Yes, I actually got it!!!! So, with any luck tomorrow (or should I say later today since it is technically after midnight now) I will finish NHL’s camouflage scarf and begin the Homer Simpson washcloth for JL.

On that note I best be off to get some sleep since I am amazed I am able to type at all. Hopefully I can locate a space in our bed because the almost 9 month old in our room is a space hog in beds.

** Please remember I am WAY to tired to be typing this now, but wanted to do it because I may block it out in the morning ;)

Beans!

After eating dinner tonight I took NHL to get him ready for bed. JL took the little guy to make sure he was all set. NHL went to the bathroom, brushed and flossed his teeth with me and then ran to the other boys.

As I got near there I heard JL exclaim "BEANS!"

I questioned this since I thought I had missed something . No, he had simply said beans.

Thinking about our meal yesterday evening I asked if JSL had gas since he ate some kidney beans.

JL said "No. . . BEANS!"

Hmmmmm. . . .  think, think, think!

OH! It finally hit me. JL was doing a diaper change, DUH. Apparently we are now able to confirm that JSL’s digestive system "processes" beans in just about 24 hours.

When NHL heard that there were beans in JSL’s diaper he ran over to JL and asked: "Can I see?"

NO, we did not show him.

When putting NHL to bed later on we tossed JSL in with him and told him he was his new "buddy" to cuddle with. I just warned that this one likes to pee, poop and puke in his sleep.

Without missing a beat NHL looks at me and says "Oh, so I’ll have beans in my bed!"

Priceless I tell you.

Sharing some bloggy love

Heather over at OMSH is having a giveaway for some amazing art by Allison Strine Designs over at Etsy. What she is asking people to do is spread some bloggy love for people out in the blogosphere. Here is what she said:

By midnight (CST) on February 8th, you must spread some love yourself. I want you to write a loving, uplifting, encouraging, generous, complimentary post about one, two, three, four, or however many you like, of your favorite bloggers.

Put some thought in it – not just a blogroll, m’kay? Let your adoration ring! Pssst…No extra points for it being me – this is a drawing, not a contest.

Right before my Blogoversary (last week) I actually posted a bunch of thank you blurbs to people out there that have encouraged me to blog (OMSH was actually one of those people). It was sort of similar to what she is asking here, but still I will challenge myself to expand on what I previously wrote.

In that entry I casually mentioned Renee. Renee is one of the May07 Mommy bloggers that I met online while pregnant last year with JSL. Renee has a blog called Life With My Special K’s. I do not believe that Renee knows how much she assisted me back in early December of 2006. Two days before my 30th birthday my OB called me after work. I knew something was not right when I saw the number on the caller ID. He was telling me the results of a blood test that I had taken. The test came back that I had a higher risk of my baby being born with Downs Syndrome. I was beyond depressed. This news ruined my birthday and left me feeling ill. I did not know what to do. I turned to my mommy group where Renee saved the day.

How did she do this? Well, Renee had actually had the opposite result with the same pathetic test. Her result came back within normal range and her third beautiful child Kennedy was born three years ago with Downs Syndrome. Renee coached me to look at all different medical websites about the so called test and how useless it is, sent me to Downs Syndrome groups, and spent hours online chatting with me. She also helped me to realize that I had to know what was going on with my baby. I did not want to wait until the baby was born. I opted to have an amnio so that I could prepare for whatever my baby may or may not have. We were blessed with a happy and healthy little boy, but thanks to Renee I knew that Downs Syndrome was not a curse.

Renee is such a strong woman who continues to amaze me day after day. While we were pregnant last year Renee’s daughter Kennedy was diagnosed with leukemia. Soon after that (I think I am getting the sequence correct) she was told that she had gestational diabetes. Renee worked through this while keeping her family going. She changed her diet, stayed with Kennedy during all of the pre-chemotherapy tests/hospital stays, and got ready for her forth child. Then when her son was born in May she arranged to have him stay with her at the hospital while Kennedy was treated.

Renee has such strength and courage. In addition to being the mother of four beautiful children (Her Special K’s), Renee is a loving wife to one of our military heroes. Her husband was just deployed for another tour of duty in Afghanistan. He will be gone for 18 months (except when he joins the family for a Make A Wish trip to Disney this spring) and I know that Renee will keep her family going. She is a brave, strong woman who is a real role model.

Please stop by and say hello to Renee. This is a summary that she wrote on her blog:

Welcome to my blog where I take on day to day life with my four amazing children: Kassidy, Kameron, Kennedy and Keeghan, and a husband in the military. Join us as we face issues with Down syndrome, Leukemia, Deployments, and every day life with 4 young kids! You’ll be in for the ride of your life!

Thank you again Renee for all that you do :)

Afternoon with my boys (2-6)

Being a SAHM is challenging, but oh so rewarding. I swear less seems to get done than used to when I was teaching full time. Granted I can not compare life now with a year ago. Hello silly, you have an almost nine month old little boy now. It takes time to nurse, feed, diaper, play with, snuggle, read to, and dance with JSL. Every so often when I am in a rush I stop myself to slow down and enjoy things. I will not get these moments back where he will laugh at anything and everything his big brother says and does. In a short time this sweet giggling and playing will be replaced with sibling squabbles and screams. Ah, the things to look forward to.

Yesterday after NHL came home from school we decided to do some craft time (other than Play Doh and coloring). I wanted the big guy to do something fun away from the television where I could feed the baby and also work on his fine motor skills. So we took out the beads that we bought the other day. The plan was to make some things for NHL to give as Valentine gifts for special people, but he had more fun designing a masterpiece, looking at it, dumping the beads off and starting over. Over the entire afternoon he went back and forth to the beads 2-3 times and played for over 2 hours (at least). This was a wonderful investment for my sanity!

Bead time!

While NHL was busy with this JSL gobbled up his favorite food, sliced carrots. He loves these and chatted away with NHL while eating and watching his big brother.

Carrot time while NHL was crafting

Meanwhile I was able to work on the magnets that NHL helped me to pick out the other day. Check these out, they are really neat.

Ahoy - new magnets

I was also able to do a little mindless knitting. Here is what NHL’s camouflage scarf looked like early yesterday evening.

Camouflage scarf update

We had a nice afternoon together and with any luck it will continue today. If the ice is cleared up I may take the boys to Joann’s to get fabric for NHL’s flannel blanket that Madame Squishy Yarn Guru (aka Laura) graciously said she would make for him. Yesterday she told me they had some really cool Muppet flannel and when he saw a photo of it he wanted it (so did JL and I actually).
