Waiting to See The Help

Back at the start of October, I wrote about reading while I get other items done. One of those books was The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I had the audio version of the book on my MP3 player. The MP3 player went with me all over the place because I wanted to keep reading and hear what would happen next. I was thrown into the world of the characters and needed to listen to their tale. Before I knew it, I was finished and left to figure out what to read next.

All these months later, I am excited that The Help will now be coming out as a movie. As a teacher, I have to admit – books to movies do worry me. Too many times beloved books come to life on the big screen and then things change.

While watching the previews for The Help, I do not think this will happen. It appears that they have taken this powerhouse novel and made it into a movie to represent the well written words. Here is a featurette from DreamWorks’ that really has me excited about the release later this summer:

The Help comes to theaters August 12. I hope to see it soon after the release so I can see the amazing women in the film come to life. If you are a fan and want to check out more, The Help Movie has a Facebook page and are also on Twitter.

Have you read The Help? Are you looking forward to the movie? I would love to know what you think of books coming to life on the big screen.

Disclosure: PR from DreamWorks sent me media information about The Help. As a fan of the book, I wanted to share this information with my readers. No compensation was given, and all opinions are mine.

Second Grade Success

Dear NHL,

This has been a challenging year on so many levels. Just a few weeks ago, Daddy and I made a decision that was extremely difficult. We took you out of the school that you had been in since kindergarten. It was practically the end of the year, but it had to be done. We were afraid for your safety.

Once you started at the new school, we were amazed with the difference from you. You smiled at the end of the day, you eagerly shared what you learned, and you were excited about all of the possibilities. This made us happy to see.

For much of the past year, you have lost your love of learning. As a teacher, this scared me. I was not happy about it. Please forgive us for not doing something sooner. As you finish second grade with your new class, I hope you will carry this love into next year when you begin third grade.

Whether it was learning about fractions, history, or taking in show and tell – you have embraced this change like a champ. Here is your latest art project that you made. You were so proud of your ceramic fish that you had sculpted, painted, and successfully brought home in one piece. Fish Art Project

I love it NHL and I can not wait to see future items that you create and learn over the future.

Love,

Mommy

Holy Hail Storms

Weather seems to be in the news a lot lately. Throughout the United States, people have been dealing with severe weather of all kinds. My heart goes out to the people in the flooded areas fighting to save their homes and to those picking up the pieces after the deadly tornadoes.

As I pulled into the driveway Wednesday afternoon, the sky changed from sunny and bright to ominous. It was in the mid 90’s, but the wind started to gust. I will admit that I was unaware that a storm warning was in our area. We packed the kids into the house and got them out of their swimsuits and decided to relax in the cooler house.  As I was sitting and doing some work, I heard thunder, saw lightning flickering outside, and then chunks of ice were slamming against the house. Yes, chucks of ice.

Hail on the patio

TechyDad was able to get the one above when he ducked outside our front door to snag it to show the boys. A little while later, the sun came out and I went outside to look around for damage. Even though it was still close to 90 degrees, there were still good sized chunks of hail in the grass.

Lots of hail on the ground

I went to check on our vegetables that we outside. Luckily, everything looked pretty good. We were a bit nervous since hail destroyed cucumbers and tomatoes a few years back.

 Our little garden

When I went back around the front, I decided to take a photo of one chunk of ice and then next to my foot to show the difference.

Hail still outside

Yes, we get hail from time to time in the Capital District area, but not like this and several times in a few days. Thank goodness everyone was safe and sound. Now we just hope things settle down across the country for the rest of the summer ahead.

My question to you this week:

Do you like summer storms? Would love to know why you do or do not. Please share any unusual weather you have had near you.

Pssst . . . be sure to stop by my Dove Men + Care giveaway along with TechyDad’s Kung Fu Panda giveaway to enter for a chance to win some great items.

Teaching Kids About Bullies – Catch Me There

Each and every school is now faced with the dilemma of how to teach students about this topic. The reality is that educators need to be trained on how to present it within the curriculum and how to recognize it within the school setting. Children need to recognize when they are being a bullied, we need to try to prevent this behavior from the start.

Have you or your children ever been bullied?

In a perfect world, bullies would not exist. Unfortunately, I know this is not the case. TechyDad and I have written about this topic many times. We have had to deal with this on several levels this year.

This week, my post on The Disney Driven Life focuses on bullies. More specifically, Teaching Kids About Bullies With Disney. Yes, I think we could utilize Disney stories and movies to help teach kids about bullies and other forms of character education. I am certainly thinking outside of the box, but often times that is the best way to reach kids. You look for something that you can connect to the topic at hand and present it in a fun manner that will stick with them for life. Please stop by to check out my latest on connecting Disney with education and let me know what Disney bullies you can think of.

I hope to see you at The Disney Driven Life to say hello to everyone else that writes there as well. My other posts there can be found under NDM183 – that’s me!
