It only took 15 months

Why is it that after the first child we become so lax with each subsequent child and often put things off?

Seriously, JSL is 15 months old now and we JUST had the first family photo with all four of us in it today. We had them done regularly when NHL was a baby, but never did it before this with JSL.

Of course there is a likely reason. Perhaps it is trying to wrangle all four of us into a photo. More specifically the two non-adult members of the family. Just trying to get a photo of each of them alone is a challenge, no less with each other and then the two of us.

Case in point, it happened Monday. Late Monday morning we went to a local amusement park with my parents and Aunt L and Uncle J (in from CA). We had a fabulous time out in the nice warm weather. At the end we happened to bump into someone we knew. JL asked her to take a photo of the four of us.

*** Please be warned – YES we were dorks and all had the same basic shirt on. NO, I did not purchase them. My parents brought them back for us after they went to Disneyland in April and we wore them Sunday for the first time.

The first photo is not too bad when you consider we had been in the sun and heat for two hours and both boys were hungry. In addition to this JSL had not napped.

Family shot - take 1

My friend asked if she should take another one just to make sure we had a decent one. We thought it was a good idea. The result is below.

Family shot - Take 2

Yes, this is why we have never attempted to do anything before this point. I believe I have now scared off a person that has volunteered to take some family photos for us. Hmmm. . . maybe I should not have blogged this! Of course if we do those it will not be after 2 hours of play without rest/nap time.

There are so many other items that I need to catch up on (like we have another walker in the family!), but this was a busy weekend and NHL starts kindergarten tomorrow. Today we have orientation of sorts for a little while in the afternoon. More to come soon! That is a promise not a threat.

A Fishy First

When NHL was little he would eat almost anything that you gave him. The only exception to the rule was tuna fish. He has never liked it and would always refuse it. Of course his tastes have changed over the last year. Now he is much more opinionated about what he will put in his mouth.

NHL turned five on Sunday. While at my parents house getting ready for his party he walked over to JL and I with the following announcement:

"Now that I am five, I will eat tuna!"

JL and I looked at each other and asked NHL what he was talking about. He continued to tell us that he now liked tuna since he was five and a big boy.

Did we believe this? NO WAY! JL and I just figured it was all talk and would test it eventually.

Last night JL and I had salad with tuna on it. We figured the boys could have left over whole wheat pasta and life would be good. NHL heard what I was making and attacked me for some tuna. Yes, he was right in the kitchen waiting to try it out of the can. Sure enough he declared it yummy and asked for a sandwich for dinner.

Who are we to deny our child the tuna that he was now big enough to enjoy? Since we knew nobody in our family would believe this we documented the event. I present you with NHL eating his tuna sandwich and a close up to show the tuna as well.

5 years old and now eating tuna

See it really is tuna

Of course now I wonder what else we can try to get him to eat or do since he is five and a big boy. Hmmmm. . . must make a list of items to test out.

It’s raining, it’s pouring . . .

my kids are not snoring – through the night at least!

Clearly the two boys have a deal between them to have Mommy and Daddy up each and every night. Typically this is between 12-2 in the morning. Most nights it seems to be a certain 14 month old little boy. NHL has slept the past two nights since he gave us the big scare. Thank goodness since I do not think my heart could take that again.

Thursday afternoon we had a horrible storm come through the area. In addition to the thunder and lightning, flooding rains joined in the fun. The city received over an inch of rain during the first burst in less than an hour.  I often complain about the threat of floods in my basement, but we were lucky nothing happened here. We think it was thanks to DGS coming that morning and cleaning out the sewers. Perhaps they were admitting to a problem, but I am sure they will never fess up.

Sure we lucked out this one time, but others did not have this fate. Other parts of the city turned into lakes. Cars in parking lots in certain sections floated away as people were stranded inside buildings. One woman had to be recused from her car as a sewer suddenly started to spew water and form a lake around her. Her car could not be opened since the power system failed and she was trapped. Along with this other parts of the city had the pleasure of finding raw sewage in their lawns and basements. The city of course is claiming little or no responsibility, like when it happened here. Sad that with all of the taxes we pay nothing is done to fix this outdated system that is not working.

During the rain on Thursday I went outside on our porch to get some photos. You can barely  see that the street in front of the house was a quick flowing river, but it was.

 Another view of the rain

Yesterday was a lazy PJ kind of day here in Angel Land. I was beyond exhausted from no sleep and did not want to fight more rain storms with the boys. We stayed in during the day. The boys were bouncing off the wall. The little munchkin learned how to scare Mommy some more. Sorry no photos of this trick with no hands, I was too busy stopping him at the time!

No fear

So proud of his new trick

Not long after this JL arrived home from work. I went to swap the cars around for the weekend. I knew the sky was quickly getting black. Of course as I moved the first car out of the driveway the sky started to dump more rain. I was soaked when I came into the house. A few minutes later I had an idea. It was raining, but no thunder or lightning. NHL needed to run and this was the perfect chance to test our the cowboy rain boots that Aunt L bought him years ago. I quickly put shorts and boots on him and took him outside to puddle stomp. When we first went out it was lightly raining, so I snapped a few quick ones. Then he found some giant puddles in the back of our driveway and was soaked from splashing up a storm. It was fun to watch his reaction when I told him to go and jump in a puddle, something he is always told to avoid.

Testing out his boots

Off to find more puddles

Today we hope to catch some rays from the sun before the next few days throw even more rain on us.

Weekend full of teething

This weekend it was teething festival here in Angel Land. Not only did my little niece S cut her first two teeth while visiting, but JSL was also hard at work. Friday night into Saturday two tiny points of his upper one year molars finally showed their face. Sunday into Monday JSL was up most of the night. Yesterday he had a low grade fever and sure enough I believe molar four has now graced us. He has been working on these suckers for quite some time. Hopefully having them cut will relieve the pressure. Now I just hope that the fever is gone because it always makes me nervous with him after our adventure and hospital stay in February.

Obviously I have no photos of the teeth, but I am including more attempts at photos of the three cousins from the weekend. Many of you may recall my Mission Impossible post from earlier in the month. Please note these are also to keep Nana happy since she checks in here!

Both of the boys love their little cousin S. NHL and JSL enjoyed showing her all of the new toys at Nana and Papa’s house.

The boys with cousin S

Watching JSL and S play was too funny. They played follow the leader often, and would get into baby spats over toys. JSL was usually a gentleman and gave his little cousin what she wanted.

The little ones play at Nana and Papa's

Sunday morning before going home S gave all of us a big scare. She had egg yolk for the first time and had a horrible allergic reaction. Thankfully after some antihistamine you would never know that she had anything happen. It was quite scarry for all of us here, and especially for Aunt M who was away. While we watched to make sure the medicine worked the kids played.

Cousins play together

Nana had to work during the day and requested once again a photo of all three of the kids. As you know from the previously mentioned Mission Impossible, this is no easy task. Here I present all of the kids together in one way or another. BTW – the program I used to make the collage chopped the parts off, so this was not the best view of these photos.

Technically all three kids together

Cousin S loved to show everyone she was "So Big" and JSL loved to laugh and dance for the turkey that Papa had. All was good in the land of teething kids.

Happy babies!

The best thing that happened this weekend. I now know what to get my sweet little niece for her first birthday. She loved the Fisher Price Little People, so I have already told everyone that we are getting her some of those.

To cut or not to cut . . . that is the question

I love baby hair. There is nothing softer and sweeter than baby hair and it is never quite the same after it is cut.

*sniffle* *sniffle* . . . . Can you see where I am going with this?

Here is a clue:

Crazy hair - Front view

And clue two:

Back view

JL is starting to demand insist that JSL gets his hair cut. I am in denial that my little guy is ready for a hair cut. When it is washed, combed nicely, and lacking breakfast in it (as in the photos above) JSL’s hair is very controlled. The problem lately is JSL is starting to use his permanent napkin as we call it in our family. He finds it hilarious to put his dirty, greasy, slimy, nasty hands through his beautiful and curly blond hair.

I suppose I will give into JL and allow the little guy to get his hair cut before he is two!
