An entirely good day!!!!!

FINALLY!!!!!

As previously noted NHL had a good drop off yesterday. At about 11:15 his teacher e-mailed me to tell me that the morning was wonderful, no tears at all and she left and he was actually eating lunch. When I picked him up in the afternoon everyone came out all smiles and I got a super report from Miss L. She said is was a great day and he used the bathroom again. When we got home the kids were outside so he played some. Later on we went inside and I looked at his lunch box. His cheese dog (cheese stick on a hot dog bun) was gone and so were the grapes! Only the juice and wheat thins were there. Miss L also e-mailed me back to let me know that he does eat snack every day, so at least I know he eats something even if not lunch.

This morning he said he was going to go into the building with one of the teachers that was outside. When we got there neither of the two from yesterday was there. I got out of the car to help him out and one of the other teachers came over. NHL grabbed my hand. I told her I would take him in since yesterday was his first day with no tears. We talked and then one of the teachers from yesterday came. He took both of our hands and walked into the building. When we got there Miss L was down the hall waiting for him. NHL hesitated, so Miss L came over and he went to her after giving me a kiss.

I think he was off today since he isn’t feeling well. I gave him some allergy medicine to see if it’s allergies or the start of a cold. His voice is very weak and he’s sneezing a lot. I wonder if he’s getting what a few other kids have (his best friend P was out yesterday and we were all with her and the rest of the class Sunday at the party). I know he sounded like I feel. My throat hurts and there’s only so much I can take while nursing JSL.

Hopefully more good reports to come from school.

A good morning – WAHOO!

This morning JL talked with NHL about still using the potty. As they were chatting he apparently told daddy that today is the day he’s going to start eating his lunch. Man I really hope so.

On the way to school (NHL actually requests that I take him) we talked. I said to him he was such a big boy. I asked him if he would run into school and give Miss L a big hug and tell her "Let’s go!" He said sure. So I kept asking him what he was going to do and he repeated it.

When we got to school two other teachers from the building were outside and asked if he wanted them to walk him in. He clutched my arm and I said "Thanks, but maybe tomorrow"  When the second said it, NHL actually said the same thing to them.

So we walked to the main door of the building and another classmate was there with us. When we got to the door Miss L was there and NHL went running to her to give her a hug. He had to remember to turn around to say goodbye to me. No hard feelings on my side, I was so thrilled to see him happy and not crying.

Crossing my fingers and toes that yesterday was us getting over that pesky hump finally.

My Literal Son

I should have known that NHL would be literal just like his daddy was when he was little. NHL is becoming more and more like JL it’s frightening.

This morning’s drop off at school was rough. NHL had to go into a different door, and he hasn’t been at school since Wednesday thanks to Rosh Hashana. Anyway, when I left his teacher was dragging him into the building with lots of screaming.

What a difference this afternoon was. When his teacher came out she was smiling and gave me a thumbs up. She was excited to tell me that NHL had also used the potty. WAHOO! Yes, it only took him until day 7 (third week) to use the potty.

So what was the breakthrough? A little conversation we had with his teacher at a bowling party for a classmate yesterday afternoon. Yes, you read that right, his teacher also went to the party and the kids were so thrilled, including NHL. Anyway, she was telling me that she didn’t understand why he wouldn’t use the potty since she told him the auto-flusher was broken.

<— is the lightbulb in my head that went off.

I looked her straight in the face and said I think we may have solved the problem. We were telling him it wans’t broken. Why? Well, when we asked him why he wouldn’t go potty, he said because Miss L told him it was broken.

So this morning JL told him that the auto-flusher was broken, but he could still use the potty. I kid you not, when his teacher told him it was broken he just assumed he couldn’t use it.

JL’s mother used to tell stories about JL at this age and into 2nd/3rd grade and how literal he was. *sigh* I guess we need to warn his teachers now since this could be an issue.

Now we’re just hoping the peeing there continues. The poor kid was holding it for 8 hours. Today he actually could talk to me since he wasn’t concentrating on getting home to go.

Weekend photos of my boys (9-8-07)

After we got home from the bookstore last Saturday NHL was antsy. He wanted to get energy out and decided to be Steve Irwin and swim around our house with goggles on. I was following him around trying to get a face shot, but the little monkey was just too darn quick. Here are some shots as I was "swimming" after him.

Here’s NHL heading to his room via the hallway:

Me thinks that leg is not a crocodile to wrestle. Mind you my skin may feel as dry as one

The little snot will NOT turn around to show me the goggles, so he continues to his room. (Please ignore the dust bunnies under his bed – those are our new pets. )

He quickly jumps onto the bed and takes the goggles off and gives me this BIG grin. He was so proud that he showed me. This picture makes me see how grown up NHL really is. Where did my baby go?

Soon after this the boys were getting restless thanks to the weather and being tired. So they all piled onto our bed to read the books NHL just purchased. I decided that that was a perfect time to take photos of my three special guys together. Here are some photos of  my boys.

JSL was thrilled to curl up in JL’s arms and have a chance to chomp on his finger. Here’s a great shot of his big blue eyes (please do not stare directly into the nose hairs – LOL).

A bored NHL trying to figure out what to get into next.

Tired boys. . . one of them just won’t admit it. Thanks to that one the smallest one can’t sleep, but another is close to slumber.

I tried to get all three of the boys to smile. That just was not going to happen. So two of them decided to be silly. Here’s the result.

Can you tell I love taking photos of my three boys? Hey I have to try to catch up with JL. Now I’m excited to be able to do with with my own camera (which I did this weekend – not last).

Childhood book memories

Books are very important in our house. Not only because I’m a teacher, but because JL and I both recall reading a lot when we were children.

We recently starting getting HBO free for a few months. Some of the mommies on a group mentioned a good show to DVR. So I started to DVR HBO Storybook Musicals. I had heard that there was "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst. This was a favorite when I was growing up. We missed that at first, but one of the first recorded was "Lyle, Lyle Crocodile" by Bernard Waber. NHL instantly fell in love with Lyle and wanted to see it over and over during those weeks that he was home with me

Then one day I saw a commercial for a show called George and Martha. I was curious, could it be THE George and Martha that I loved when I was a child? Sure enough it was a show with Nathan Lane as the voice of George based on the books by George Marshall. When I was a kid, we all used to fight in my elementary school to take out these books. I once again programmed the DVR to record these shows for NHL to enjoy. We all loved them. They were adorable and made the books come alive.

During a rainstorm last Saturday we decided to head to the bookstore to use up a gift card that NHL had received. We went in and saw a few books. Then I suggested looking for a Lyle the Crocodile book and possibly George and Martha as well. Here’s a photo of the books NHL picked out.

Since we bought these they have traveled all over in his backpack. He loves them and wants us to read them to him all of the time. It’s so nice when some books are timeless and can be shared with your children.
