Winter 2007-2008 unofficially begins

Is it OVER yet?

How sad is it that I am saying this after only one ice storm and our first real snow event of the season?  GAH!

This morning the snow began to fly just before 11:00. JSL was in his crib sleeping peacefully (thank you MOOricle) so I went out to my car to clean it off and move it up. The white nasty stuff was coming down quicker than I was able to get it off my van. *sigh*   As I was out there flipping out about getting NHL at 1:00 my father called. He was going to suggest to pick him up NOW since he had heard the roads were already bad. This was just 30 minutes into the storm and about 1 inch on the road.

So I cleaned my car off, scooped up JSL and went to pick NHL. His teacher was really nice and brought him to meet me at the door so I did not have to take the sick monkey out of he car. Poor NHL did not have his boots and wiped out on the way into the house. This stuff is powdery and slick. We are home warm and safe and just have to wait for JL to get in later on. He has a nice size trek to get here. With any luck he will be out a little early to avoid the major mess.

They are saying that we may receive 4-8 inches this storm.

This one?

Yes, you read that right. We are getting an even larger storm coming Saturday night and all day Sunday. ICK! I am ready to pack it up and move to Florida to be closer to Disney World NOW!

Here is a photo of the white stuff as of 1:30 this afternoon.

The winter season really begins

And now here is one of the Chanukah decorations in the window:

Updated storm photos to follow later. Now I just hope we can stop the ice damns from forming on our roof and flooding the inside of the house.

It’s a MOOricle!

*THUD*

That would be the sound of my head (and probably JL’s too) hitting he laptop this morning. To say that sleep was rare last night would be the understatement of the century.

Last night JSL was really miserable. His poor nose had alien life forms escaping from it in large quantities. There was no doubt this was his first official cold and not from teething. He finally settled down to sleep and was up again before we went to sleep. JL managed to get him back to sleep fairly quickly, but that was just the calm before the storm.

At about 1:00 the congested, miserable monkey woke up. He came into bed with us and we decided to head to change his diaper. I was the lucky one that had the task of cleaning out his nose. After much snot sucking he sounded a little bit better. We were hopeful that he would come into bed with us and go back to sleep.

NOT!

He was still horrible congested. At about 2:00 I asked JL if I should try something that I heard someone from one of my mommy groups mention in the past (Hey N). She had used breastmilk to help her boys when they had pinkeye. I vaguely recalled people also mention using it for stuffed noses. I was willing to try anything at that point. JL was skeptical and tried to get JSL to settle with a steam bath. It helped a little. At about 2:30 I was asked to quickly pump some milk.

So off I went to pump about an ounce of milk to use for nose drops. I went back into our room and was greeted by a less than thrilled group of boys. I put a few drops of milk into each of JSL’s nostrils and then went back to bed. I took him into my arms and in about 10-15 minutes he was sleeping peacefully. WHOA!   It worked!!!!

Since then I used it when he got up this morning so he would be able to nurse. Now I am going to do it again to try to get him to nap some. I joked with JL that I wanted to bottle my MOOricle milk since babies are not able to use anything when they are sick and this seemed to help a lot.

On that note I am off to help JSL before we have to brave the storm and pick up NHL from school. The storm is coming at about the same time he gets out of school.

Crib hair!

Not long after I posted the photos of NHL with his hat hair JSL had his own crib hair incident. The proof is a little blurry since he was in my arms as I was taking the photo (and chatting online with my cousin – hey M). Here is what I was able to capture quickly:

Crib hair!

Coming soon photos from my B-day on Sunday, more Chanukah photos, my friend Moosekin’s visit yesterday, and NHL’s Chanukah party at school today.

Baby teething/cold permitting I will edit and post soon.

Is it Hanukkah or Chanukah or . . .

Tonight is the 8th and final night of Chanukah. How fitting it was when I was looking at my Google Reader and saw a post  all about how to spell the Festival of Lights. On the GoodyBlog today there was a post called "How Do You Spell Channukkahh?" – all about this dilemma.

Growing up I always spelling it Hanukkah. This was probably because most of the items you could purchase for the holiday spelled it that way. Then I met and married JL. He had a strong preference for Chanukah. . . so I not only agreed to have a Kosher kitchen for him, but also switched my spelling of the holiday too (just kidding). Do I really care – no not really. In fact I think more non-Jewish people are worried about the spelling than those of  us that celebrate the Festival of Lights.

In additon to posting other website references about the spelling of Hanukkah/Chanukah, the GoodyBlog also had the following You Tube video. Since I thought it was cute I am also going to share it with everyone.

Enjoy and Happy last night of Chanukah to all of my Jewish friends!

Chanukah Party & Family Day (12-8)

Thursday evening my brother (Uncle I), sister-in-law (Aunt M) and niece (SG) came into town. Due to NHL being really sick Friday we were not able to have dinner with them that evening. Saturday morning all seemed to be well. The high fever disappeared almost as mysteriously as it had appeared. Thanks to this we felt it was fine to make plans and see our family.

Aunt M and Uncle I requested lunch out at the newly opened PF Chang’s. We all said that was fine, so I made a reservation for 12:30 for the nine of us (that included the two babies). We had a very nice lunch, looked around the crazy mall quickly and then stopped at Target. We needed to go there for more Aveeno diaper rash cream as well as frosting and sprinkles for Aunt M’s Chanukah cookies.

After that it was time to head back to my parent’s house. At Nana and Papa’s we all decided to let the kids have some of their Chanukah gifts. Nana and Papa gave NHL the new Fisher Price Smart Cycle. It seems like a great "toy" for in the house during the winter. It will provide him with muscle movement (PT), and nice hand/eye coordination with the joystick (OT) using educational games. Here is a mosaic of NHL opening the gift. Note when he finally sees what is inside. Also included are some photos of him riding on it.

Meanwhile JSL was enjoying his first Chanukah (check out the cool shirt that Nana and Papa got him). It was so fun watching him get into his new toys. He sat on the floor for quite some time playing, talking, watching and enjoying the farm toy that Nana and Papa gave him. He loved finding the places that would make music and kept experimenting with everything. Here are some photos of him including when he got there in his snowsuit, playing with Papa, modeling his "My First Hanukkah" shirt. Unfortunately we never had SG and JSL in a photo together with their matching shirts on. In addition to the farm toy he LOVED the Glow Worm from Uncle I, Aunt M and SG. When we got home Saturday night he kept singing with it. When it would stop glowing he would kiss it on the face and talk to it trying to make it go again.

Of course the Smart Cycle did not come assembled since Santa does not do that for Chanukah – *wink*    Thanks to this JL had the opportunity to put it together for NHL. Here’s a shot of that fun.

Constructing Smart Cycle

NHL was quite bored waiting for his Smart Cycle to be ready. Part of the time he watched Papa’s new "baby" play Noggin.

Papa's new baby

By this point he was starting to really need something to do. Aunt M had him help SG open her Chanukah gifts.

Helping his little cousin

Then he was quite sick of waiting. Note the sour puss.

Bored NHL

Since I was getting slightly bored I took the following photo of my shoes and dreidel socks:

SG was quite content when mommy read her a book and Papa came over to chat with her:

Once NHL’s bike was set, everyone just stayed together in the living room waiting for the other family members to come to the Chanukah party.

Everyone together

Even the Chanukah Puppy was just hanging out:

Finally everyone arrived and it was time to eat. Here is a mosaic of all of the family gathering around the lit menorah enjoying our meal together. Oh and of course the goodies!

Poor JSL just had too much fun and excitement and fell asleep while the rest of us ate our meal.

Tired baby

We had a very nice time with my family celebrating Chanukah together. More photos and weekend/Birthday updates coming later.
