Summer Reading Disney Style – Catch Me There

P1030490This summer, the boys and I are participating in a reading program at the local library. Thanks to this, NHL has been highly motivated to read books. What’s even better, he likes and is intrigued with chapter books. This has not always been the case.

In the past, I bought him books like the Phineas and Ferb one seen here, but he was too upset about the concept of chapter books.

It has been exciting to watch NHL devour different series of books over the last few weeks. I love seeing the excitement in his eyes as he announces he has finished another chapter.

My last Disney Driven Life post was Summer Reading With Disney. I wrote about NHL’s fears about chapter books, things we tried, and shared some great resources from Disney. Did you know that they have a website where you can search for titles based on age of child, categories of books, and featured characters. They do and you can read about it on my post.

Please stop by to say hello and check out the other magical posts from my Disney Drive Life friends. My other posts there can be found under NDM183 – that’s me!

Before I go, I wanted to share a fun video that I love featuring Phineas, Ferb, and Regis Philbin. Yes, THE Regis Philbin sings a Phineas and Ferb song. Oh and Neil Patrick Harris also has a small part in it.

Are you Phineas and Ferb fans? Let me know if you have a favorite character on the show.

Captain America’s Question

Saturday evening, TechyDad and I went out to take two of our 10th Anniversary dinner. Earlier in the day, we went on errands with the kids. One of the stores was Target. We stopped on a toy aisles and before I knew it, this is what I was looking at:

Captain America JSL

It was Captain America ready to defend me in his Winnie the Pooh and Tigger shirt. Did you except him to look any different?

Then, when we got back home from a delicious dinner, Nana and Papa wanted to share a JSL funny with us. Apparently, our four year old son asked a question out of the blue. Without missing a beat, he asked if Whiskers farts. Let me introduce you to Whiskers.

    She's Watching You

Yes, my four year old son wanted to know if a cockatoo passes gas. Ah, boys! My parents told him that of course she does since she is part of the family!

So, today, I would love to hear any funnies from your family from the last week or so. Seems like something perfect for a Sunday.

More Summer Sleep Needed

Dear NHL and JSL,

We need to talk. The summer is here and the sun is out a lot later. Daddy and I would love to let you stay up to enjoy the extra hours of daylight.

There is a problem though. Although you will go to sleep at night and typically stay asleep…you wake up WAY too early the next morning.

Sleeping While AwayNo matter when you go to sleep at night, you are both up almost as soon as the sun comes up. NHL, we can almost count on you being up before the alarm clock goes off at 6:00 each morning. Daddy needs to get up for work, but you are really allowed to sleep to 7, even 8 if you would. JSL may sleep a little later, but not by a lot. Most mornings you are up by 7.

Lack of naps, lots going on, and less sleep is starting to show up with behaviors that are not so nice. So let’s make a deal. If we let you stay up later to play at night with Daddy and enjoy the extra hours of sun, you will try to sleep in. Ok?!

Love,

Mommy

Stop Distracted Driving

Recently, something has really been bothering me. I have seen a lot of other drivers in their cars with cell phone to their ears and/or texting. They are not stopped at lights. No, they are driving. Not only is this dangerous, but illegal in New York State. Yes, it is illegal to text while driving and you must have a hands free device IF you talk on your cell phone.

Accidents happen with normal distractions and circumstances. We don’t need other items to be there. I can not imagine any call or text being so important that your life or another person’s is worth it. Of course, if you must, pull your car over and do what you need in a safe manner.

Sorry, I just had to vent since I have been seeing more and more people in their cars doing this. So to lighten it up a bit and send home the message I give you this PSA message from Cars 2

So my question to you this week:

Does the state that you live in have laws about talking on the cell phone or texting while driving? What do you think about laws like the ones we have in NYS?

Nobody asked me to write this post, it is just something that has been on my mind for a while and I wanted to hear what others were thinking about the subject.

Getting Ready For the Holidays in July

As I mentioned the other day, we often try to get my niece, nephew, and two boys for a photo together for our family members. As you know, that quest is often a comedy of errors. You would think that it would get easier, when you are trying to do this with only two children.

Insert extreme laughter, sarcasm, and rolling eyes here!

Yes, I will admit it. Since we had the kids, we actually start to think about Christmas cards long before December hits. When Global Influence and Storkie asked me to participate in a post about Christmas in July, it made me laugh. By Halloween, we begin to talk about a photo shoot with the kids. What should they wear, when should we do it, and the list of options goes on.

Then, we inevitably forget about time and it is nearly Thanksgiving. TechyDad and I start to talk about things, we agree to photo cards.

The clock is ticking as December is suddenly here. Some years, Chanukah has already begun before my birthday which is early in the month. This is about when we really start to panic. Yes, we need to get cracking. Photos must be taken, cards ordered, and then ship them out.

The photo shoot itself is usually full of stressful, but fun laughter. The boys get silly and we keep snapping away until we hope that we have at least one photo to work.

My silly boys during photo shoot

Once the kids are asleep, TechyDad and I sit at the computer and toss out a lot of the pictures. Once we find THE one, we have to agree on a card. Since we are Jewish and a lot of friends celebrate Christmas, we opt to make New Years cards. This is also a nice way of being able to drag out the process a little longer and not being late.

2011 Internet Holiday Card

So, admission time here. How are you about getting your holiday cards ready to send to family and friends? It may only be July now, but before you know it the holidays will be here.
