Is there a “right” way to sleep?

If there is a "right" way to sleep my 4 year old seriously does not understand it.

Exhibit A – The way I found NHL yesterday night when I went in to check on the boys.

NHL sleeping sideways

Please note that the blue body pillow (MINE – which he now believes to be his) is on the wall the long way. The planet pillow is actually at the top of his bed where he SHOULD be sleeping.

Exhibit B – NHL all twisted up. A closer view of how he has his body positioned on the bed. Also notice why we MUST put him in a PJ sleeper since blankets do not stay on the child.

Comfy, no?

Exhibit C – Even Curious George is not curious enough to sleep like his friend NHL and is at the correct part of the bed. OK – sure he is not on the pillow right, but at least he is closer to the so called "normal" way of doing things.

Why sleep the right way?

Tonight he was sleeping on the side bar of the bed. Thank goodness that was there. Hopefully he will not fall out of bed at Bubbe and Grandpa’s house the next few nights.

Sweet dreams! I am off to pack and sleep. We are off to visit JL’s parents tomorrow and have a long trip ahead. I shall try to post from there, but no promises.

*sigh*

Bite me . . . really hard!

Ah, kids you have to love them!

This afternoon we were on our way to look for something at Linens N’ Things and then Target. As we drove into the area the traffic pattern was a mess. Another driver was being crazy and trying to make a left hand turn when there were not going to be openings for hours.

As we passed by it was pretty easy to read his lips and know exactly what he was saying to me. Let us just say it was very colorful and not G rated. Heck it would have gotten an R rating and censored on late night television.

Here is the conversation that followed. I was driving and the boys were in the back seat.

Me: "Bite me!"

NHL: "Bite me really hard!"

JL & Me –> holding back our laughter!

Another funny from Christmas Eve. As you know we are Jewish. Each year it has been more challenging to explain to NHL that Santa does not come to visit us. It is very hard to explain to a 4 year old why we do not celebrate Christmas when it is plastered every where 24/7 from Thanksgiving to New Years . . . wait make that from June to New Years!

Anyway, it was very evident that NHL was thinking about Christmas on Christmas Eve. Here is a conversation that happened that night as JL was changing JSL diaper and I was waiting to feed him:

NHL:  "Daddy we have a problem"

JL: "What is the problem NHL?"

NHL: "We don’t have a fireplace!"

JL: "Why do we need a fireplace?"

NHL: "For Santa"   (he was very matter of fact about this)

JL: "Santa doesn’t come here NHL. We are Jewish and do not celebrate Christmas."

After this it continued a little longer. JL tried to explain to NHL that Chanukah was better than Christmas since we are able to celebrate our miracle for 8 days, not just one. Not sure if we sold him on this, but he did not raise any more fuss that night. We have more time until next year to think of other things to say.

FYI – JL’s Christmas Eve tradition growing up was to ask his father to light a fire just in case Santa forgot that they were Jewish. Apparently it was an on going joke in their house. *sigh*

This makes me miss the Chanukah Harry sketch from SNL more!

Sleep . . . the final frontier!

We all had sleep last night. . . . WAHOO BABY!

Yes, you read that correctly. Even the teething baby slept through the night. He actually fell asleep on JL early. He went into his crib and only fussed twice early on. Both times a binky and tucking his blanket buddy under his arm to snuggle did the trick. So he basically slept from 7:30 to almost 7:00. Not too shabby.

When the boys woke up they came into our cloudy warm wonderland of fun flannel sheets.

NHL petting JSL’s hand:

And now a kiss:

Kissing his little brother

A certain 7 1/2 month old was VERY serious. We have been worried since he just has not been his smiling/laughing self. Teething is just evil I tell you. Here is Mr. Serious:

So serious at 7 1/2 months

Meanwhile Daddy is making funny faces and saying silly things. JSL thinks about smiling:

Thinking about a smile

Yes Houston. . . we finally have a smile:

Smiling after sleeping all night!

It was so nice to see that sweet little smile after the last few miserable days without it. Meanwhile a certain little person was devising his own plan.

Here comes TROUBLE!!!

Seconds later he went for a sneak tickle attack on his little brother. NHL knows that JSL is super ticklish on his neck if he kisses it. So that is exactly what he did.

NHL tackles JSL

I love my boys . . . all three of them!

It’s Pajama Time!

What could be better than a day in the nice warm house, wearing PJ’s all day with my boys? Not too much more . . . unless JL was home from work with us.

Yesterday the weather was supposed to be nasty starting at about noon.  ICK! The boys and I opted to just stay home and remain in our PJ’s. NHL is really enjoying the all day pajama parties. So much that he has claimed my body pillow as his new "sleeping bag" and taken it into his room at night.

*sigh*

At one point the boys were just sitting there together on the couch completely engulfed by Blues Clues. (NHL was watching JSL so mommy could use the facilities – teacher bladder only goes so far after two pregnancies). Here is how I found them when I came back:

Deep in concentration

Can you tell that they both really like Blues Clues? Heck, they both bobbed their heads to see the television when I dared to get in front of them to take more pictures. BOYS!  Please note how "thrilled" JSL was with me taking his photo yet again.

Doesn't the little guy look enthused?

NHL can get completely into a zone (like his Daddy) and ignore me. See, just like this:

Totally in a zone

JSL finally was able to get me to take one last photo. He decided it was time to wiggle off the couch. I snapped this one and quickly scooped him up since he does know how to back off already.

Trying to wiggle off the couch

I hope to add a video later. Right now my big boy (JL) is sleeping and he can not help me to reformat it to put online. One of these days I will remember how to do it. For now I will blame it on Dora. I swear she is zapping my brain cells.

By the way. . . today we did get out of out PJ’s and left the warm house. Not to worry I took more fun PJ photos that I will share later.

Not a lot of sleep. . . for mommy & daddy

Sleep . . . . what is that again?  I seriously do not think that JL and I have a clue these days. It has been WAY too long since we have been able to sleep more than 6 hours a night. For me I think it was likely before I was pregnant with NHL (think November 2002), aside from when I am sick.

The last three nights have been VERY rough. JSL is getting at least his top two front teeth and he is a mess. His gums are so swollen, he is clingy, he keeps throwing up, and he whimpers when going to sleep. In addition to this, he wakes up when resting all the time. Naps only last 20-30 minutes unless I am holding his for the entire nap (like yesterday – thanks Mom). Last night he cried through our entire dinner. We were keeping my mother company and had brought things for JSL to eat. He wanted nothing to do with the green beans, rice cereal, or puffs. He just wanted to be held, nursed or cry. Not the happy, smiling baby we are used to. We dosed him up with some Tylenol since he was clearly in pain.

When we got home JSL only wanted to nursed. He fell asleep at that point and we moved him into his crib. He woke up several times and quickly drifted back with a quick binky application. Before we went to sleep I went to check on the boys. Here is how I found NHL:

NHL's interesting sleeping position

This really dose prove he could sleep anywhere! The night time camera setting did make him stir a little. Here he is seconds later:

Moved to this position after the first photo

Meanwhile the little teething machine was snoring away in his crib. He was all cozy and happy thanks to the milk and Tylenol.

Sleeping little guy - thank you Tylenol!

And another view of the sleep that did not last long.

So peaceful

As hinted at this sleep did not last long. At 2:00 JSL was up and crying again. He came into our bed and was ready to party from not wanting to sleep. JL was able to get him to curl up and get back to sleep with us after 30+ minutes. Then at 6:30 NHL woke us up and it was time to get Daddy out to work.

*sigh*

Now I have a little teething monkey asleep on me as I type. He was crying again, so I gave him more Tylenol (it had been well over 12 hours) and he is catching up on sleep. I am off to see if I can convince another little boy to rest so I can as well. I feel bad for JL since I know his boss will not allow him to curl up and nap under his desk.
