Goodbye Crib and Hello Bunks

Dear NHL and JSL,

Today is a really big day. This afternoon, we are finally getting bunk beds for the two of you. We offered to let you each have your own room, but neither of you wanted to be alone. Since we can not fit two twin beds into the space, we had to make the bedding go upward.

We have spent the last two weeks going around looking at different options. We fell in love with a set of twin over twin bunks at Raymour & Flanigan. Then, we had to make the choice between the darker and lighter woods.

The options

I think the two of you liked the darker wood option for only one reason. You adored the pirate bedding and space items within the decorating. We explained to you that none of those items come with the furniture. Thursday night, we went to the store and a very patient man named Michael at Raymour & Flanigan helped us to finalize our purchase. Much to our surprise, there were still slots for delivery and set up Saturday.

This morning, we will be working on your room to get ready for the delivery truck. NHL, your bed mattress will be moving to the bunk bed, but the box spring and frame need to be stored. Then, you will be the new owner of the top bunk.

Moving on up

JSL, this will be a big milestone for you. You are finally getting a big boy bed. Your toddler bed, and old crib, will likely be given away or sold. When I took the photos of your room, my heart skipped a beat. Suddenly it hit me that my baby is growing up way too quickly. I have a feeling you are going to love your new bed, and hope that it will be more comfortable for you to sleep the entire night.

Bye-Bye Bed

No doubt that there will be more tears when we put everything away, but it is the right thing to do. The two of you need this change and it will create many new memories for the two of you as brothers. Daddy and I wish you many sweet dreams in your new bunk beds.

Love,

Mommy

Family Concert Time with Laurie Berkner

Growing up, I have fond memories of my parents taking me to concerts. This is where I should laugh that some included Paul Simon, Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, The Beach Boys, and countless other people and bands that they were fans of. Then there was the Rosenshontz concert that brought back the biggest memories. There was something special about being in that smaller theater and watching Gary Rosen and Bill Shontz rock out. Heck, I still remember seeing my mom and dad sing and participate along with them.

Now imagine me, rocking the mommy van with my Laurie Berkner music playing most mornings. As I take the kids to school, we often are belting out Victor Vito, BOOTS, I’m Gonna Catch You, or one of her other catchy tunes. I also have memories of JSL rocking out with Laurie and his play guitar in December 2009. He loved to watch her segments on Nick Jr. Of course, the inspiration for that was Laurie’s song My Family. Here is a video about the song:

Our boys love going to concerts and we were lucky enough to be invited by the PR company representing The Laurie Berkner Band to see them next weekend for a stop on their  “Animal Party” concert tour. Yes, Capital Region friends – Laurie and company will be in Schenectady on the Mainstage at Proctor’s Saturday, January 7 at 11:00 am. If you are not near Schenectady, NY – have no fear. The Laurie Berkner Band has other dates on this tour as well.

There are so many goodies on the website for Laurie Berkner, but I love the section about the concert. Check this little bit out:

The Laurie Berkner Band is throwing an Animal Party Concert!
What can you bring to an Animal Party Concert?
1. Your favorite stuffed animal (for your head). Any kind will do!
2. A party outfit!
3. Your dancin’ shoes, so you can groove to the music!

I have a feeling Snowflake and Clumsy just may be joining us for our concert adventure! So my question to you this week is inspired by our love for family concerts:

Have you ever seen Laurie Berkner in concert? I would love to know about it or another concert you went to and your favorite song. No doubt there will be more coming on this after the concert.

It's Me

Disclosure: My family and I will be receiving complementary tickets to the “Animal Party” concert next week. The opinions are mine as a long time fan of Laurie Berkner and I received no other compensation..

Scarves for Stuffed Friends

Days after the boys made Snowflake and Clumsy at Build-A-Bear, a request came from my little guy. He decided that his bear friend was cold and needed a scarf. Of course, what he really meant was that he wanted me to knit Snowflake a scarf. So what is a knitting Mom to do?

Scarf Request for Snowflake

I just happened to have a little yarn left from making Cousin BA’s scarf and it matched Snowflake perfectly. JSL could not imagine what was taking me so long to knit the scarf. I mean hello, it was not finished in 20 minutes! That night while he was sleeping, I captured Snowflake to measure and make sure the scarf was complete. JSL was surprised in the morning and declared that his friend must go out.

On the go with Snowflake

Yes, Snowflake went on some adventures since the snow had not started to fly. Of course, once Snowflake had a scarf, NHL declared that Clumsy also had to have one. NHL asked if I could make him a matching scarf since I had already started a new one for him. I was able to knit up NHL’s new scarf quickly.

Something new for NHL

That night, I quickly used the rest of the yarn to make Clumsy his own scarf. Luckily, I had just enough to make it work. The result are two stuffed family members that are smiling and warm, plus two very happy children.

Looking warmer

So have your children ever asked for something for their stuffed friends? Would love to know and hear your stories.

‘Twas the Last Night of Chanukah

Tonight, we will gather at our dining room table one last time to light our menorah. This year, we have been using a Maccabee Air menorah. In addition to this, we bought an LED Magen David to add a little extra something to our celebration.

Seventh Night

The first few evenings, the boys actually pulled up their little chairs to watch the candles flicker and burn down. While watching, I would play Chanukah music on a special Spotify station that I made with tunes that we enjoy for the Festival of Lights. There were also evenings that I shared some fun holiday music videos with the boys. Another new one was really fun and I thought I would share.

So please excuse me while I spend the day playing games and having fun with the boys while they are home from school this week.
