Baked Beans + Baby = Bath

So what happens to a sweet smelling one year old boy when he is given baked beans to eat?

A HUGE mess is created!

Lucky for us most of the mess was on JSL’s face and hands, the rest was on his bib and tray. Thank goodness he did not throw this part of dinner because it would have been very bad.

As mentioned baked beans was one of the items given to JSL for dinner last night.  He also had a veggie dog (mainly pitched onto the floor and down the hall), corn off the cob and some crackers. He loved the baked beans and gobbled them up.

When it was time to take my camera out to capture the amazing baked bean display painted all over his face I received this reaction:

Peek-a-boo - I see baked beans

I guess he was a little shy. That or he wanted to make sure he got some baked beans on his eye lids too. Apparently that is the rage in the two and under crowd!

As JL and I were trying to figure out how to tackle the kiddo into the tub he just sat there smiling and giggling at us. He certainly had no clue what a frightening task this was for all involved.

What do you mean my face is dirty?

Although his face, arms and hands were coated in the bean sauce, his hair was not involved THIS time. Thank goodness since it is getting a little long now. Mommy just can not make herself cut the super soft baby hair just yet. It is so nice and just starting to curl like so:

Lovely hairdo!

As we continued to draft our clean up plan JSL decided he wanted something. First he thought about it:

Hmmm. . . .

Finally he asked for a "crackah" and some "wah wah" to go with it.

Cracker time

While JL was off getting the bath ready I decided to feed the boys some chocolate pudding that NHL made. This was the first time JSL had pudding and he really seemed to enjoy it (seriously he did – this photo does not show him growling for more).

First taste of chocolate pudding

The layers of grime were starting to get crusty so it was since to get the boy into the tub. Here is a view of a clean part of the child.

Looking down at the mess

Not everyone at the table was wearing their meal, well at least not most of it. NHL was definitely much cleaner than his little brother.

Mmmmm. . . tastes good

This photo almost made me cry – my baby is all grown up and going to kindergarten in the fall.

Wah - he's all grown up

Finally the tub was ready for the little monkey, so one last photo of the mess before it was time to get all of the food off.

Just before heading to the tub

For some reason it looked a lot worse once he was sitting in the tub about to get cleaned. Thank goodness I only had the little guy in a onesie for dinner – it made stripping him a lot easier.

Lots of layers of food to wash off

Here is one last photo of the little guy half clean:

Half way there

The good news is he is still clean tonight and sleeping (for now at least thanks to major teething). The bad news – he loves baked beans and we will likely have a repeat performance eventually.

As the Seat Turns

Monday morning we went to breakfast at my parents house. It is rare that everyone has a holiday off, so we took advantage of it.

Hanging with Papa

While there we decided it would be a great opportunity to head out to my car to turn JSL’s car seat around. Sure he loved being able to look at NHL while turned around, but another milestone has come. The little guy was officially a year old and had long since topped 20 pounds.

JL and I fought with the latch system for a little while to get the seat out. Then we flipped it around, set it upright and struggled to get it latched back in.

Both seats facing forward

Not long after that it was time to head to the car to witness JSL’s reaction to being turned around.

Off to see the new riding arrangement

Once he was all buckled in he was a little confused. He was not used to looking to the right for big brother. Still it was the first thing he did – watched to make sure NHL got into his cow seat.

Looking for big brother

This face tells the story:

Not too sure about this

Luckily once NHL was on board JSL was content. He soon realized that he could swing his feet around and not have to hit into the seat in front of him.

Wow, this is comfy - room for my legs

Soon it was time to test drive both car seats facing forward. Both of the boys seemed content and ready to go.

Both boys ready to ride

JSL was very tired at this point since he was lacking a morning nap. Before we even got to the main road to our destination he was sleeping. Clearly he was quite comfy in his newly turned car seat.

Conked out within 5 minutes

JSL was so tired that he managed to sleep through most of our shopping trip. On the way home he let us know he was quite happy with the new view from the car.

Refreshed after a nap

Happy sleeping boys = happy mommy

I love my boys – all three of them!

Sure, they may make me crazy from time to time, but that is supposed to happen that way. It is the simple things that make me smile and know that being home with them is the right thing for our family.

Who knew that something as simple as seeing the two little ones asleep resting peacefully could make me so happy? Wednesday night we bought JSL his own pillow to sleep on. He really loved to curl up on it and we felt it was fine to do since it was very firm. Here are some resulting photographs. This is JSL with his new pillow:

All comfy with monkey pillow case

Meanwhile in his bed NHL looked like this:

All snuggly in bed

Notice how similar the two boys are when they sleep. Both of them have their little hands out in almost the identical way. First JSL in his crib:

Happy sleeping baby

And NHL in his bed:

Too many pillows - never!

He definitely likes his pillow. JSL loves to pet the pillowcase to fall asleep now when he wakes up.

Tired monkey

JL and I are so very lucky to have two great little boys. NHL and JSL love each other and recently have started to play and interact more. JSL is a sponge trying to take everything in and NHL loves to show his little brother anything and everything. If NHL is in the living room and moves to another location JSL quickly follows. Now he crawls after his big brother, but soon enough he will be toddling after.

They grow up too quickly  . . . . . . *sigh*

A sign of Mommy’s love for CVS

Last Tuesday morning when NHL was getting ready for school he was playing with his Doodle Pro. He was writing some words and happened to call us over to see one. This is what he wrote out of the blue. . . .

Masterpiece . . .

Perhaps this is a sign that my CVS shopping bug has spread to NHL. He actually likes to go with me and gets upset when I go alone or he does not see a new store.

I am off to look at this weeks ad to see if there is anything I am going to go for. The Dial soap is intriguing, but I do not recall too many other items.

Baby sleep eating 101

Just the other day I was looking at NHL’s baby photos. I mentioned to JL that I still recalled the day that he fell asleep mid-bite of baby food in his highchair. We both laughed and thought it was not likely to happen to JSL.

NHL sleep eating - March 2004

Monday early afternoon I was shocked with the following sequence of events.

At about 11:30 JSL and I sat down at the dining room table to have lunch. He had a cream cheese sandwich (his new favorite) and was quite content. As I was eating my lunch he was babbling away to me. Suddenly I looked a little closer because he was not talking as loudly. Sure enough his eyes were completely closed. He was still talking and shoving sandwich into his face.

I could not believe my eyes and continued to watch. I was afraid to walk by him to get my camera for fear of disturbing him. The poor little guy was obviously exhausted and needed rest before going to get big brother from school. I finally was able to retrieve my camera. This is a shot of his hand soon after he dropped a piece of his lunch onto the tray.

Too tired to keep eating. . .

Not too long after this I watched as he was trying to get more comfortable. First he tried this:

 Must catch some Zzzz's

Slowly his head moved down onto his shoulder as he was curling up into a good position. I know if I slept like this I would have a stiff neck for day. How about you?

Kind of comfy here

This must not have been the most ideal spot because soon enough he shifted to this pose.

 Ahhhh. . . . much better

He stayed like this until I had to clean him off and pack him up to go and pick up NHL from school. Who knew that life as a baby could be such tough work. I guess growth spurts and teething take a LOT out of you.
