The Care Bears are Back

As a child that grew up in the 80’s, a lot of the hot toys and shows are back. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane. Imagine a world filled with clouds, rainbows, and cute bears with special symbols on their tummy. Do you know who I am talking about?

Old School Care Bears

These Care Bears were the ones that my mother collected. I had several of the huggable bears, figures that would move, and their Cloudmobile (need to locate those). The grandkids adore playing with the ones that Nana still has. I am often quizzed to recall their names. Some I can recall, but others do escape me.

When I was contacted by Mom Select and MommyParties to host a Care Bears Welcome to Care-a-Lot viewing party for the new Care Bears show on the Hub, I jumped at the opportunity. I have two boys, but it was the chance to share part of my childhood memories with them.

Our original party had to be rescheduled thanks to my little guy going to the ER. Now, we are attempting a redo with friends to share the new series with them. While JSL was not feeling well, we watched an episode that we had on our DVR together. My five year old son really enjoyed it. Check that, we both liked watching the Care Bears come to life in front of our eyes.

I remember watching the old Care Bears show and specials. At the time, they were really decent and we would watch them over and over with friends. The new series has fantastic animation and lessons to learn from. There is even a place to meet them on the official Hub website. I know we will be watching more of the Care Bears as the series has just begun and airs Saturday mornings on the hub at 8 am ET.

Now, it’s time to fess up. Who is your favorite Care Bear? I think I still love my original Cheer Bear (the rainbow tummy up above), but Grumpy in the new series has a lot of spunk.

It's Me

Disclosure: I was selected by MomSelect and Mommy Parties to host a “Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot” in home party. We received a DVD screener and media kit featuring stickers, crayons, activity sheets, and party ideas. The opinions are 100% mine and I received no other compensation.

11 Year Wedding Anniversary

Most of the events from eleven years ago today are hard for me to remember. I have a feeling a lot of brides will probably admit that to you because they are so caught up in the moment and making sure everything goes just the way that it was planned.

Our wedding table

The day that I married TechyDad is mostly a blur. So many hours of preparations all came down to one magical day when I became JL’s wife. Our family and friends were all there to help us to begin this part of our lives together.

Heading to the Chuppah

Thank goodness for photos. I can look back and smile and know that it was the day that I married my best friend and the father of our beautiful boys. It was also the time that we would take our first adventure to Walt Disney World, where I would convert TechyDad into a member of the Disney Driven Life.

Family at our wedding

Last year, our tenth anniversary trip had to be canceled thanks to Hurricane Irene. Of course, that was only after the plumbing debacle that caused us to move out of our house on the night of our actual anniversary for several days (fumes were that bad). Luckily, we were able to head back to Disney World in May where we celebrated our next anniversary a little early.

Thanks to the Disney PhotoPass photographers for suggesting that we do a few couple only shot. These are items that we will always cherish.

JL, I love you with all of my heart and am so lucky that we have had these eleven years together. I look forward to many more adventures, magical moments, and memories together.

Michaels Passport to Imagination Surprise

Dear NHL and JSL,

Last summer, we traveled to many different countries. We had craft filled adventures to Canada, Australia, India, Russia, France, Mexico, China, and Brazil. There were other countries, but we just could not make it to all of them and the programs at the library. It was a great time thanks to Michaels and their sponsors. This year, they are doing the same program.

Since it was a half day of school on Thursday, I decided to surprise both of you and take you to the Mexico event. JSL loved making a stingray on Tuesday, so I knew it would be a nice change and break in the heat. When we arrived, the table was set up in the front of the store with the items being made.

Just like last year, the people at our local Michaels store have been so wonderful, helpful, and patient. They quickly showed both of you how to get started making monarch butterfly. Both of you had a great time trying out some new items like the paint pen.

When your monarchs were finished, it was time to make some gecko lizard pins. NHL, I loved how you wanted your gecko to have an extra long tongue. JSL, then you asked to have two different colored eyes on yours.

I know we will reference the passport book for more ideas to create over the summer and to learn about the places that we “travel” to together.

Today is the first official day of your summer vacation. I am sure we will have many more days at Michaels and other locations exploring all that is out there together. Watching your faces and smiles makes this time even more special.

Love,

Mommy

2000 Post Blogging Milestone

Several weeks ago, TechyDad noticed on my WordPress admin page that I was closing in on post number 2000. He actually noted that it would fall on a Friday, so I knew it would show up for an Aloha Friday topic. In February 2007, I started The Angel Forever as a Live Journal blog which eventually moved to a self hosted domain with the same name in October 2007.

 Disney and Moi

Over the 2000 posts, I have written about being pregnant with my youngest, giving birth, my oldest starting school, my oldest switching schools, and soon my youngest heading to kindergarten. We have celebrated countless birthdays, events at school, and lots of Jewish holidays. The Angel Forever has documented our travels to Walt Disney World for the first time as a family in May 2009 and multiple times since then. I write about health topics (febrile seizures, getting your first mammogram), education topics, arts and crafts, and knitting. Since we adore books and I am a certified reading teacher, I started Tuesday Tales to focus weekly on books that we adore, reviews, meeting authors, literacy topics, and beyond. As my children get older, and life changes the topics within The Angel Forever will morph and grow with me. So my question to you this week:

How has your focus changed during your blogging tenure? Do you tend to go more with the flow, or do you have a certain niche that you write about?

The Importance of a First Mammogram

Women often avoid talking about a certain topic. Which one? Well it’s not going to the gynecologist, but it kind of related. This time, I am referring to getting a mammogram. Doctors keep changing when a baseline should be performed and how often screenings should be done after that point, so it important to talk to YOUR doctor for guidelines. Today I am sharing my journey.

 Mammogram Machine

Last year, I went to see my gynecologist and was given homework. I love her and followed her when she went to a new practice. It isn’t every day that you have someone you love, trust, and respect who also knows way more about some body parts of yours than you do. At that last visit, she told me that I needed to get some homework done and get back to her. She wanted to know more about the breast cancer that is on my father’s side of the family tree. I have written about my Aunt S many times before. She was diagnosed with breast cancer almost nine years ago just before NHL was born.

What I did not know was much about Mimi’s mother. My great grandmother passed away from breast cancer when Mimi and Aunt T were very young. What I found out was my great grandmother was actually younger than me when she was diagnosed and she passed away at my current age. For those keeping score, I am 35 years old. In April I called my doctor’s office to inquire about things. I figured if my appointment was in May, I would go in April to get the mammogram done before. They sent me a script because they were requesting it be done early with my family history. It arrived while I was packing to go to Disney World. The script may or may not be in Orlando right now.

I never had a chance to call and my appointment was canceled twice. Finally, I was able to get in to see the NP in the office while both of the boys were still in school. She did not seem as worried about the family history, but agreed a baseline would be good. She gave me a script and told me to walk down to the hall to the Breast Center. If I was lucky, they may be able to do a walk in. So I grabbed my things, made another appointment for next year, and walked to check about a mammogram.

Much to my surprise, they were able to do it at that moment. They were about to head out to a meeting, but said that they would do mine quickly before going. Ten minutes later, I was in the dressing room putting on my new stylish shirt with easy access to the girls.

Mammogram fashion

I went into the waiting area near there and a few minutes later I was called back into the room by a technician. I wish I had gotten her name she was awesome. I explained why I wanted to take some photos. I was inspired to do this thanks to Robyn and her post about getting a mammogram. The technician thought it was a brilliant idea. Before starting, she asked me if I had any powder, deodorant, or anything else on. Since this was not planned, I did put on deodorant that morning, so I was given some wipes to make sure to remove it.

Then, it was time to begin and the technician immediately put me at ease. She explained everything step by step, helped me to position myself so I was not on my toes as much, and was sweet chatting with me. Before I knew it, the mammogram was over and I was ready to get dressed and head home.

Mammogram myths

So did it hurt? Not for me, but I have heard that for women not as “blessed” with cleavage it is more uncomfortable. For me, the hardest part was holding my breath while standing on my tippy toes and being squished. Seriously, that was the worst in my mind. Still it is a small price to pay IF it will find something that I otherwise would not know about. Just over a week later, I heard back that my mammogram was normal. Now if all goes well, I can wait five years for my next one.

So I beg you, if you have breast cancer in your family, noticed something strange on your self-breast exam, or are 40+ years old – PLEASE talk to your doctor about when you should start having your mammograms done.

It's Me

P.S. A special thank you to Robyn for inspiring me to document this to share with others. Her posts several years ago really had an impact on me. Oh and Rene, I told you I was not waiting and holding back.
